INTRODUCTION Congratulations on purchasing an Ozito Spade Handle Drill. We aim to provide quality tools at an affordable price. We hope you will enjoy using this tool for many years. Your Ozito Spade Handle Drill OZSHD1050WA has been specifically designed for low speed and high torque drilling and mixing applications. It is intended for DIY use only. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Warning When using mains-powered tools, basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury and material damage. Read the whole manual carefully and make sure you know how to switch the tool off, in an emergency, before operating the tool. Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this machine for future reference. ELECTRICAL SAFETY The electric motor has been designed for 230-240V only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. Note: The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for Australia and New Zealand. This tool is double insulated in accordance with AS/NZS 3100: 2002; therefore no earth wire is required. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an electrician or a power tool repairer in order to avoid a hazard. Note: Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this tool. The insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool. Using an Extension Lead Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool.before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing.replace the extension lead if damaged or defective. When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk of fire and electric shock. 4

GENERAL Warning Read all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term Power Tool in all of the warnings listed below refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless) power tool. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 1) WORK AREA a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. 2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. 3) PERSONAL SAFETY a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before plugging in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. 5

GENERAL (cont.) e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust related hazards. 4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that can not be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools, unplugged & out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tools operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from intended could result in a hazardous situation. h) This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. i) Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. 5) SERVICE a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. b) If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. 6

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPADE HANDLE DRILLS Before drilling into walls, ceilings etc, ensure there are no concealed power cables or pipes in the cavity. Always use the side or spade handle, this gives you greater control should an accessory become jammed. Keep the cord clear of the accessory being used, do not wrap the cord around your arm or wrist. Hold the tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Accessories used with this product must be rated for at least the speed recommended on the tool rating label. Warning Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling and other construction activities contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: Lead from lead-based paints; Crystalline silica from bricks, cement and other masonry products, and; Arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated timber. The risk from such exposures vary depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals; work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specifically designed to filter out microscopic particles. Always wear eye protection and a dust mask for dusty applications and when drilling/chiselling overhead. Sanding particles can be absorbed by your eyes and inhaled easily and may cause health complications. 7

OPERATION Warning Always turn off the tool and disconnect from the power supply prior to change any accessories or making any handle adjustments. Side Handle The side handle will provide additional control, support and guidance when using the tool. The side handle can be assembled to the left, top or right side of the metal gear casing. Align the thread on the end of the side handle with the corresponding hole in the metal gear casing, screw the side handle clockwise till secured. Spade Handle The rear spade handle provides additional control and support when using the tool. It can be attached either horizontally, vertically or should you require it, diagonally. To assemble, place the spade handle into the locating boss at the angle you desire, secure in place by screwing the spade handle securing knob (clockwise) into the recess. To change the angle simply loosen the securing knob (anti-clockwise), pull the handle off the locating boss, replace the handle back into the locating boss at the angle desired. Secure as previously described. Keyed Chuck Use Warning Prior to inserting or removing accessories always disconnect the tool from the power supply. Drill bit accessories can be sharp, always wear gloves to prevent cuts or lacerations. To insert a bit or accessory, follow the below steps: Open the chuck jaws by turning the collar your with fingers. Chuck key hole Insert the drill bit into the chuck ensuring the end of the drill bit Jaws does not touch the screw inside the chuck. Once the jaws hold the bit or accessory firmly, use the chuck key to Body further tighten the jaws by placing it into each of the 3 holes on the chuck body and rotating the key clockwise in each position. Collar Note: Always use the chuck key on all three holes on the chuck body to ensure each jaw is equally tightened. 8

OPERATION (cont.) To remove the drill bit or accessory follow the below steps: Warning Drill bits can be hot after use, always wear gloves to prevent burns or lacerations. First loosen the chuck jaws with the chuck key (rotate chuck key anti-clockwise). Remove the drill bit or accessory by hand. On/off Trigger Switch Warning Prior to turning on the drill ensure you have a secure hold of the main handle. To turn the drill 'ON', depress the trigger; to stop the drill, release the trigger. The drill has a variable speed trigger, the further you depress the switch the higher the speed of the drill. Note: Use lower speeds for starting holes without a centre punch, drilling in metal or plastics, driving screws or drilling ceramics. Higher speeds are better for drilling wood and composition boards and using abrasive and polishing accessories. Lock on Button The switch has a lock on button incorporated to the side of the main handle. As the name suggests it enables the trigger switch to be locked 'ON' without the need to continuously hold in the trigger. This feature is intended for use when the drill has been mounted in a drill stand or otherwise firmly held, not by hand (drill stand not manufactured by Ozito). Avoid locking the switch 'ON' when drilling by hand so that you can always instantly release the trigger should the bit bind in the hole. To engage the lock on feature, depress the trigger, then depress the lock on button with the side of the thumb. Once you release both the trigger and lock on button, the trigger should remain engaged. To turn off the drill when the lock on button has been engaged; simply squeeze and release the trigger. Warning Ensure the lock on button has been released before disconnecting the plug from the power supply. This is done when turning the drill off by squeezing and releasing the trigger. Failure to do so will cause the tool to start immediately the next time it is plugged in resulting in possible bodily harm or property damage. 9

OPERATION (cont.) Variable Speed Dial The trigger switch has a variable speed dial. By rotating the dial you are able to limit the maximum speed of the drill. See the dial for the direction of which to rotate for higher or lower speeds. Forward/Reverse Lever The direction of the chuck is controlled by the forward/reverse lever located above the switch. FORWARD ROTATION: Move the lever to the right. FOR REVERSE ROTATION: Move the lever to the left. The reverse rotation is used for withdrawing bits from tight holes and removing screws. After any reversing operations, return the lever to the forward position. Note: Do not change the direction of rotation while the chuck is still in motion. Damaged caused to the gear box by such actions will not be covered under warranty. Drilling Warning When changing bits or accessories always turn off the tool and disconnect from the power supply. When drilling in timber, use twist spade bits, drill bits, power auger bits, or hole saws. When drilling in metal, use high speed steel twist drill bits or hole saws. Always ensure the materials to be drilled are secured prior to drilling. When drilling, apply pressure straight in line with the bit. Pressure used should keep the drill bit biting into the material yet not enough to stall the drill. Should the drill stall, do not squeeze and release the trigger in an attempt to get the drill started again, release the trigger immediately and remove the bit from the material. The drill most likely stalled due to overloading by applying too much pressure. Proceed to drill using a lighter pressure. When removing the bit after having drilled a hole, keep the trigger depressed which will ease the bit being removed and help prevent jamming. 10

MAINTENANCE After each use, blow air through the tool housing to ensure it is free from all dust particles that may build up. Build up of dust particles may cause the tool to overheat and fail. If the enclosure of the tool requires cleaning do not use solvents but a moist soft cloth only. Never let any liquid get inside the tool; never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid. When the carbon brushes wear out the tool will spark and/or stop. The brushes are a wearing component of the tool and should be replaced prior to the carbon wearing out fully. Brushes will wear out after many uses but before they do take the tool to an Authorised Ozito Service Agent for quick and low cost replacement. Always replace both brushes at the same time. Note: Ozito Industries will not be responsible for any damage or injuries caused by the repair of the tool by an unauthorised person or by mishandling of the tool.
