AUGUST 2018 PAGE 2 Regulatory Subject Matter Committee Update Regulatory Subject Matter Committee Update: On July 26, 2018, DIAC joined MEDEC to participate in the BC government medical device sector consultation for the proposed Health Sector Payment Transparency Program. The DIAC objectives for this meeting were to understand what the BC government is considering as a possible program and the degree to which it could impact the dental industry. It was also a critical opportunity to bring compelling evidence as to why the dental sector should be exempt from this program. It is clear from the meeting and discussion, the BC government has taken an interest in what ON had proposed earlier this year. Both MEDEC and DIAC provided strong messaging that both for medical devices (in general) and dental (specifically) there is already a high level of oversight to prevent inappropriate influences on clinical decision making and procurement decisions that could impact patient care. DIAC stressed the government should be taking a risk-based approach to this program - phasing the implementation, limiting the scope - and focus where there is the strongest evidence of inappropriate Susanne Currie Director, Regulatory Affairs influences on decision making and highest risk to patient safety. We respectfully asked that the dental sector be exempt from the Program given the professional oversight provided by the College of Dental Surgeons of BC and their rigorous complaints process. DIAC will be providing the BC government with a written submission (due August 15) to reinforce key points made at the July meeting. The Minister of Health is expected to receive a Final Report with recommendations in late October. We will continue to monitor the situation, take action where warranted and keep the membership up to date. The DIAC Subject Matter Committee meets the first Friday of every month to review regulatory issues. Please forward all member questions to Susanne Currie currie.s@pg.com for review and response immediately after the monthly review. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Have your say.who should receive DIAC s Social Responsibilty benefits? DIAC is expanding our Social Responsibility Program and want our members input. We would like to see a variety of worthwhile dental oriented charities/funds that will benefit. Whether it s a yearly donation or possibly a scholarship, sponsorship or an existing charity---what suggestions do you, as DIAC members, recommend? Send your suggestions to info@diac.ca to have them registered as possibilities.
