Glossary 6) Horizontal / Vertical Field of View (FOV): The maximum angle in object space at which the optical system images. Shorter focal lengths will have wider FOVs, while conversely longer focal lengths will have narrowed FOVs. H # Pixels / H (mm) 7) : The dimensions of the focal plane sensor array. This is usually defined by the number of pixels Depth of Field (16) Filter V # Pixels / V (mm) Camera Sensor (4) Pixel Size (microns) expressed horizontally (H) and vertically (V) as well as the specific size of the pixel. By using the Pythagorean theorem (D2 = H2 + V2), the diagonal of the sensor array can be calculated. The image circle of a lens should exceed this diagonal for full sensor array coverage. 8) Minimum Object Distance (): The closest distance a lens can be to an object and still remain in focus. Object Size / FOV (6) Θ = Field of View (6) Max Length Lens Max Dia. Effective (1) Cold Stop (5) Camera Thread (12) Camera Image / Sensor Size 9) Modular Transfer Function (MTF): A quantitative measurement of the ability of any lens to reproduce levels of detail from the object to the image. The MTF for a lens is usually represented graphically as a function of contrast vs. the image size (expressed as a radius away from the center point) for various line pairs per millimeter. A typical rule of thumb is that the largest frequency on an MTF diagram is ½ the pixel size. For example, for a camera with a 15 micron pixel size, the limiting frequency of the system is 30 lp/mm. (Front) Working Distance (9) F-Number / Iris (2) Lens Thread (12) (Overall) Working Distance (13) 1) : Many cameras used in the MWIR & LWIR have an internal aperture that prohibits stray light from entering the optical system. The diameter and position of this cold stop within the camera are important parameters. 2) Depth of Field (DOF): The axial distance in object space that is reproduced as an image without any perceptible loss of sharpness. Factors critical to a lens DOF is camera pixel size, f/#, and magnification of the system. Chip To Flange Dist. (12) 10) : The mechanical mount that allows the lens to connect to the camera. Typical camera/lens mounts are as follows: C- = 1 Diameter x 32 TPI thread, with a sensor depth of 17.52mm CS- = 1 Diameter x 32 TPI thread, with a sensor depth of 12.52mm F- = Roughly 50mm Diameter, with a bayonet fitting, with a sensor depth of 46.5mm SLR = 42mm Diameter x 1 thread pitch, with a sensor depth of approximately 11mm T2 = 42mm Diameter x 0.75 thread pitch, with a sensor depth of approximately 11mm 11) (Overall) Working Distance: The distance from the object to the image plane. 12) Resolution: The measurement ability of a lens to produce object detail. Usually expressed as line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm), a camera s resolution can be expressed by multiplying the pixel size by 2 & dividing this value into 1000, or Resolution (lp/mm) = 1000 / (2 * Pixel Size of Camera) 3) : This is the deviation, expressed in percentage, of the image quality from the normal, or perfect, image that should be produced. No optical system is perfect, and this is a measure of how accurate a lens ability to reproduce the object in image space. 4) (Effective) (EFL): This is the distance from the 2nd principal plane to the rear focal point (usu ally the sensor array) when the lens is illuminated with rays parallel to the optical axis. For a fixed focus lens, this distance is constant, and is usually designated as the focal distance when used at infinity (or, when looking at far away objects). For example, a 25mm lens will have an EFL of 25mm when imaging an object at infinity. For a zoom lens, there is an upper & lower limit of the focal length range, which translates into a broader (short focal length, wide angle) or narrower (longer focal length, or telephoto) field of view. 5) F-Number (f/#): While imaging at infinity, the f/# of a lens is the ratio of the focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil of the system (usually the front optical element). A higher f-number system corresponds to a smaller aperture, as by increasing the f/# the light throughput of the lens is reduced. An added feature is that an increase in the f/# increases the depth-of-field for the lens. 13) : This defines the transmission range for the lens. Visible Light: Transmission range from 400 to 700nm SWIR (standard): Transmission range from 900nm to 1750nm (0.9 1.75 microns) SWIR (long wave): Transmission range from 1000nm to 3000nm (1.0 3.0 microns) SWIR (extended range): Transmission range from 900nm to 2500nm (0.9 2.5 microns) MWIR: Transmission range from 3000nm to 5000nm (3.0 5.0 microns) LWIR: Transmission range from 8000nm to 12000nm (8.0 12.0 microns) BROADBAND Extended beyond a single range, for example 1 5 microns (broadband swir-mwir) 14) : The maximum amount of deviation an image center will traverse as it travels from the minimum to the maximum ranges of the zoom range. This is expressed as a whole number of pixels (on the array sensor). 15) : The amount of time, in seconds, that it takes for the lens to move from the shortest to the longest focal length at room temperature. 38
