Family History, Volume I Ennett 9-1 The Ennett Family 9.1 Origins Susan Ennett married Cornelius Carney on the 30th of December, 1839, at Braddan. Continued from 8.3.1. and see 9.3.1 below. The original family name would appear to be Annett and to be from Northern Ireland. The name Ennett does not appear in the Oxford dictionary of surnames and it seems to be a phonetic variation of Annett. In turn, Annett is a diminutive of Annis found chiefly in Northern Ireland. The root name Annis comes from a Middle English vernacular form of the name Agnes. The female name Agnes derives from the greek agnos, meaning pure or chaste, but in folklore the name Agnes is associated with the latin agnus, a lamb, being the symbol for Christ. 9.2 Thomas Ennett- Ireland 9.2.1 Thomas Ennett (389) was born circa 1790 1800, in Ireland. He was a weaver. He married Susanah circa 1820 9.2.2 Susanah (484) was born circa 1800 in Ireland. She married Thomas Ennett circa 1820. 9.3 Susanah Ennett 9.3.1 Susanah Ennett (110) was born in 1823/4, the daughter of Thomas Ennett, a weaver, probably in County Down, Ireland. She does not appear in the 1841 census (not yet arrived on the the Island) nor the 1851 Manx census, when she was probably living in Liverpool with her first husband and children. The 1851 census does show a Susan Kearney aged 29, a widow, living at 5, Chapel Row with her sons William (9) and John, (6).

9-2 Ennett Family History, Volume I She married Cornelius Carney (109) on the 30th of December, 1849, at Braddan. The family appear to have moved to Liverpool where her two children were born. After the death of Cornelius in September, 1853, Susanah married Samuel Skelly (436) on the 19th of August, 1856 at KK Braddan. The witnesses were George Skelly and Ann Cowin. Samuel died soon after the marriage, but the exact date has not yet been determined. It seems that there were no issue of the marriage. Susanah married for the third time on the 30th of September, 1860 at Braddan to James Moughton, ten years her junior. The witnesses were William Callister and Agnes Ennett. It seems that there were no issue of this marriage. The census of 1861 shows the family living at 8, Hanover Street, Douglas, Susan s two children are listed as Barney. At the 1871 census she was living with her third husband and her children at 33, Barrack Street, Douglas. At the 1881 census she was lodging with Robert & Mary A Lewin at 4, Bigwell Street. She was employed as a domestic servant. Although no family relationship is show, this was probably her daughter and family, though Mary A s birthplace is given as Douglas. Susanah died on the 2nd of February, 1890, aged sixty-six. See 8.4 for details of her descendants. 9.3.1.1 James Moughton (437) was baptized on the 15th of December, 1833, at German, the son of John Mughtin & Margaret Cringal. A shoemaker, he married Susan Ennett on the 30th of September, 1860, at Braddan. He was buried at Braddan on the 9th of August, 1872. 9.4 Peter Annett ca 1790 9.4.1 Peter Annett, the son of John Annett, married Susanah Cowley at Castletown in 1793. There was at least one son of the marriage, Thomas, born circa 1820. 9.4.2 Susannah Cowley 9.5 The Children of Peter Annett & Susannah Cowley 9.5.1 William Ennett was baptized at KK Rushen on the 5th of October, 1817, the son of Peter Ennet and Susana Cowley. 9.5.2 Thomas Ennett was baptized at St. George s on the 20th of May, 1820, the son of Peter Ennett and Sarah Cowley. 9.6 Susannah Annett 1830 9.6.1 Susanah Annett was baptized on the 9th March, 1830, at the Methodist Chapel, Newry, County Down. 9.7 Edward Annett 1832 9.7.1 Isabella Annet was born circa 1805 in County Down, Ireland. Her maiden name and the name of her husband has not yet been determined. In 1851 she was visiting with her son and famly at Friary. Her age wasgiven as 40 years and she was recorded Brian Lawson, 1999, 2005 Printed: Monday, 4th February, 2008

Family History, Volume I Ennett 9-3 as married. In 1861 she was living with her son at Arbory Road but is now a labourer s widow. She has not been found in the 1871 census. 9.7.2 Edward and Jane Annett are known, from the census return, to have been living at Arbory in 1851. The baptisms of their children were recorded under Ennett, no doubt a phonetic rendition of the Irish Annett. No direct family connection has yet been established, but the known facts and speculations are being recorded in the event that they prove to be ancestral. Edward Annett was born in County Down, Ireland in approximately 1832. his mother s name was Isabella (1861 census) born 1805 in Ireland. He appears in the 1851 census for Arbory, living on the farm of Jospeh Dawson. He was described as a Farm Labourer from Ireland. His age was given as 22, which would make his year of birth 1829. In 1861 he and his family were living at Arbory Road, Malew. Edward is still described as an agricultural labourer and his age was given as 28 years. In 1871 he and his family were living at Ronaldsway and his age was givne as 38. The 1881 census for Ronaldsway, Labourer s Cottage, gives his age as 49. His name is now being spelled Ennett but he is still described as a Farm Labourer. Living with the family was Norman Gill, aged 5, described as a grandson. In 1891 he and his wife were occupying 2 rooms at 29, Chester Street, Douglas. e and Jane gave their birth place as County Down. Living with them is Emily Ennett aged 6. She is described as their daughter but was probably their grand daughter. 9.7.3 Jane Cousance was born in County Down, Ireland in approximately 1825. She appears in the 1851 census for Arbory, Friary, when her age was given as 25 years. In 1861 her age was given as 27 years. In 1871 her age was given as 39 years. The 1881 census for Ronaldsway, Labourer s Cottage gives her age as 48 and she is now named Jane Ennett. The discrepancies in the ages at the census of 1851 and that of 1881 have not yet been resolved. However, if the ages given in the 1881 census are correct, then Edward and Jane would have been 19 and 18 in 1851. If they had married without their parent s permission, then they would naturally wish to improve their ages at the earlier census. 9.8 The Children of Edward Annett & Jane Cousance Number & Name Type & Birthdate Place/Notes Isabella B 29th Jul 1849 Arbory James Edward B 7th Sep 1851 Arbory Jane B 11th Dec 1853 Arbory Mary Ann B 25th Dec 1855 St. Mark Edward B 2nd May 1858 Malew William Henry B 25th Mar 1860 Malew George B 14th Sep 1864 St. Mary, Castletown in 1861 census the name was recorded as Annet 9.8.1 Isabella Ennett was baptised on the 29th of July, 1849, at Arbory. In 1891 he was working on the farm of William Moore, Ballavilley, Santan. 9.9.2 Jane Annie Ennett was born on the 6th of March, 1879, at Braddan. In 1881 she was living with her parents at Ballavoar, Braddan. In 1891 she was living with her widowed mother at Ballacrigga, Santan. 9.9.3 Margaret Kate Ennett was born on the 20th of June, 1881, at Braddan. She does not appear in the 1891 census. 9.9.4 James Jessy Ennett was born on the 25th of April, 1883, at Braddan. He married Eliza Kennaugh in April 1903. In 1891 he was living with his widowed mother at Ballacrigga, Santa. Their son, James Edward Ennett married Jane McMullin at St Mary s in 1927. In turn, their son, Brian Ennett married Dorothy Ashe at St Mary s. This information was provided by Brian Ennett to Alf Carney in 1993. George Douglas Lewin (379) stated that James Edward Ennett who lived near him (George Lewin) in Windsor Road, Douglas, was some sort of relation. 9.9.5 Robert Daniel Ennett was born on the 28th of June, 1885, at Braddan. He does not appear in the 1891 census. 9.9.6 William Ernest Ennett was born on the 16th of October, 1887, at Braddan. Both parties were of full age and from Tromode. The father of Agnes is given as Francis Ennett, Labourer while that of James Cain is given as James Cain, Shoemaker. The witnesses were William Ennett, the bride s brother, and James Killey. It appears very likely that Francis Ennett was related to Thomas Ennett (399), possibly brothers.
