Mrs. Kim Walcheck, President of Lakewood PTA Council, also welcomed those in attendance and acknowledged PTA unit presidents in the audience. The program was turned over to the 8th grade band members from Garfield and Harding middle schools, under the direction of Mrs. Julie Tabaj, who entertained the crowd with a rousing selection of marching band music. DISPOSITION OF MINUTES Board President Einhouse asked if there were any corrections to the published minutes of the Regular Board of Education Meeting held on August 1, 2016. Mrs. Shaughnessy moved and Ms. Petrie Barcelona seconded the motion to approve the meeting minutes as published. Yeas: Mr. Einhouse, Mrs. Shaughnessy, Mr. Favre, Ms. Beebe, Ms. Petrie Barcelona Nays: None REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Superintendent Patterson said we are past Labor Day and school is in full session. Before beginning his report, the Superintendent again introduced Mr. Bill Lavezzi, a candidate to represent District 11 of the State School Board, and Mrs. Debbie Bernauer, member of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education. Mr. Lavezzi thanked the Board for the warm welcome and for allowing him to attend this evening. It was a smooth start to the school year. Superintendent Patterson recognized the total Operations Department at Lakewood City Schools for their work this summer. They moved all classroom, administrative and custodial supplies from the St. Luke, St. James, and Franklin sites into three new elementary schools. They also coordinated the transition of our nursing program from Lakewood Hospital to the O Neill Healthcare facility, and the move of our hospitality program from the hospital to the Doubletree in Westlake. Mr. Reitenbach advised that his department was responsible for cleaning and waxing over 1 million square feet of school facilities. They also coordinated inspections of heating, cooling and emergency equipment. The Superintendent gave a huge shout-out to our maintenance, custodial and cleaning staff for doing a wonderful job to get our facilities ready for the new school year. Our preschool moves also went well at Grant, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. All inspections were completed in a timely manner. We are happy to report that our three-year old preschool program at Roosevelt is completely full with 4 sections and 32 students. We also learned over the summer that our special education annual rating for Lakewood City Schools and Lakewood City Academy received the highest honor of meeting all requirements in the world of special education.

As of today there are approximately 5,100 students enrolled as follows: 2,287 Elementary Students 1,122 Middle School Students 1,560 High School Students 122 Lakewood City Academy Students Over the summer we hired 3 new school administrators, 18 new teachers, and 6 new tutors. At the last meeting changes to the middle school music schedule were presented to the Board. Students are now permitted to take both instrumental and vocal music. As of today, there are over 200 students taking advantage of both these music opportunities at the middle school level. Last spring the Board voted to change the dress code. Early feedback to the new dress code is very, very positive. There have been far fewer infractions in all buildings, and staff members are reporting that it has gone much smoother at the beginning of the school year. Convocation was well received with a lot of publicity in the local media. Students and staff have settled into their routine of a new school year. All-in-all it has been an excellent start, and the credit goes to our staff. This ended the Superintendent s Report.
