Fall 2017 Class Schedule KNITTING BASICS AND SKILL BUILDING Class: Learn-to-Knit Basics Cost: $65 Dates/Time: Thurs. evenings, Sept. 14, 21 & 28 from 6:15-8:15 pm (Heather Harden) Friday mornings, Sept. 29, Oct. 6 & 13 from 9:30-11:30 am (Heather Harden) Saturday mornings, Sept. 16, 23 & 30 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm (Aldona & Carrie*) Duration: 3 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: In this class you will learn about different yarns and weights, how to do a long-tail cast on, knit, purl, do ribbing and learn to recognize stitches and bind off. You will knit a simple wash cloth and learn all the knitting basics to get you started. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off. You MUST have experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. Included: Double-pointed needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Mittens Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Monday evenings, Oct. 23 & 30 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn how to make a basic mitten on double-pointed needles in a worsted weight wool. We ll teach you how to increase for a thumb gusset, how to make your thumb and a simple decrease to finish both thumb and the mitt. Think warm and cozy! Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, join in the round, knit and purl, knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. Class: Basics of Magic Loop Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Wed. morning, Sept. 20 from 9:30-11:30 am Wed. evening, Oct. 25 from 6:00-8:00 pm Sat. morning, Nov. 4 from 9:30-11:30 am Skills Learned: Make an adorable snowman cup cozy using magic loop, a technique that uses one long needle to knit in the round instead of double-pointed needles. Magic loop can be used to make socks, sleeves and hats and is a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, increase, decrease and be familiar with knitting in the round. You ll knit 3 swatches made from your stash yarn and bring to class to learn the Kitchener, mattress and whip stitches and a three-needle bind-off. Directions for swatches will be provided upon registration. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Before class, knit 3 swatches and bring with you to class (see pattern provided), bring your own 24 or 32 circular needles US size 8, Handi Tool (not included but available for purchase) Instructor: Heather Harden Class: Basics of Continental Knitting Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Monday evening, Oct. 23 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn the basics of continental knitting, a technique which involves holding your working yarn in the left hand as opposed to English-style in which you throw the yarn with the right hand. It is commonly considered to be a faster knitting technique. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Included: Yarn to practice this technique Additional Info: Bring your own single-point or circular needles US size 9 or10 (not included but available for purchase) Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Reading Your Knitting Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Sept. 28 from 9:30-11:30 am Description: This simple hands-on class can change your knitting life really! Learn to recognize all your stitches and when something isn t quite right and recognize where you left off in a pattern and recognize mistakes so you can fix them! This class is for all levels. Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Troubleshooting Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Oct. 5 from 9:30-11:30 am Description: Does your heart sink when you accidentally pull stitches off of your knitting needle? In this class, you will learn to put those stitches back on the needle correctly as well as recognize and fix small errors such as twisted and dropped stitches. You will also learn how to undo (a.k.a. tink ) your knitting in order to make a correction. Prerequisites: MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Bring your own Handi-Tool (not included but available for purchase) There will be homework prior to class, directions will be sent upon registration. Instructors: Aldona Shumway Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Fixing Big Mistakes Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Oct. 12 from 9:30-11:30 am Skills Learned: Have you ever found a mistake several rows down on a project and debated whether to fix or ignore it? If your primary repair strategy is to rip out your knitting, this class may be for you! You will learn to work your way down to a single incorrect stitch, fix it, then work back up to your current row. You will then pull out, repair, and re-knit a group of stitches while leaving the rest of your project intact. Not all mistakes can be fixed in this way but since so many can, it s a technique well worth learning. Crochet edging can be just the answer! In this class, you will learn three different edges: single crochet, scallop, and a novelty stitch for fun. You will knit swatches at home then crochet edges on them in class. In this class you ll learn how to read a pattern, do a magic-loop cast-on, crochet and join hexagons, do a finished border and block the final project. This can be a great stash-buster project. Brioche knitting creates a double layered fabric that is both warm and visually interesting. A tried-and-true classic that yields adorable results. This is a great class if you re looking to move beyond knitting just hats and scarves. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, do ribbing and bind-off Additional Info: Bring US size 4 & 6 straight or circular needles, 3 stitch holders, tapestry needle (not included but available for purchase) Six buttons will be needed and you may select and purchase them when needed. Did you try some colorwork only to be disappointed by the results? If so, you should take this exciting color theory class! You will learn color families, an artillery of color vocabulary and how to use it in your knits. Activities will include color matching yarns to an inspirational image, knitting small swatches with new combinations, and working with paper to study color. Class: Custom Fit - Measuring & Choosing a Pattern Cost: $40 Dates/Time: Wed. evenings, Sept. 27 & Oct. 4 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Amy Herzog s Custom Fit Program allows you to choose any of her patterns, and any yarn, combined with your measurements to generate a pattern specifically for you. In this class you will learn how to use the Custom Fit Program to create sweaters that fit perfectly. You will leave with a detailed set of your own personal measurements and the skills to make a high-quality swatch to determine your unique gauge, a must for accurate sizing. Then the Custom Fit system will do all the math for you and generate a personalized sweater pattern based on your measurements and gauge. You get to choose a pattern design you like and any weight yarn you want! Note: Yarn is not included in the class price. Using your personalized sweater pattern, you will make the sweater on your own. Prerequisites: Must have knit a sweater and be competent to independently do long-tail cast-on, knit & purl Included: A complete custom pattern personalized for your measurements and gauge. This is a great way to create two socks that are the same and avoid the one-sock knitting problem. When you knit two-at-a-time, when you re done you re done! Prerequisites: This is for an intermediate knitter who has knit a pair of socks previously. You MUST be competent to independently cast on, knit and purl. You will learn how to read a pattern and chart, stranded knitting, how to change colors, duplicate stitch, after-thought heel, knitting an i-cord and finishing a toe with the Kitchener stitch. Start now and you will have time to create heirloom stockings for the entire family. THIRTEEN EASY CHRISTMAS PROJECTS It seems early, but soon the countdown to Christmas will begin. Have no fear, we re here to help with our Knit Down to Christmas! Mother of Purl will send out a weekly project idea by email featuring a simple one or two-skein project each week for the 13 weeks leading up to Christmas to get you ready with all your handmade holiday presents. The focus is simple, quick and a good value with a FREE pattern. Let us help make the decisions, so you can just knit! Here s how it works: Every week from mid-september to early December we will feature a pattern (that will be free with yarn purchase) and one or two selected yarns for that project. You ll receive a quick email on Friday announcing that week s project. We ll have a sample and suggested yarns on display to make it easy to decide. It ll be a quick and easy way for you to make your handmade gifts for the holidays. Skill level for the projects will vary, but most are appropriate for beginners or advanced beginners.
