There is not an idle rig to be found, crews are busy on construction projects and suppliers are scrambling to keep up with materials to the job sites. I love this high level of activity; it is a great time to be in the business of drilling oil wells. At our next dinner meeting scheduled for June 20th a presentation from Sam Storrick with Chevron and Chandler Smith with Scientific Drilling will present on EM Gyro technology and whipstocks to redrill wells with production rigs. The technology explores the possibility of salvaging wells that would have otherwise been plugged and abandoned. Our May dinner meeting featured Randy Lovorn with Halliburton discussing managed pressure drilling (MPD) and the opportunities for reducing nonproductive time that MPD can deliver. This is an interesting topic that has the possibility of improving drilling performance here in Kern County. Thanks to Randy for traveling out

June 2013 Page 3 Lucky Member of the Month: Trent Rosenlieb (Berry) I was born in a small oil producing town located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, known as Bakersfield. My fate in the oil patch was cast early due to the fact that my father was in the oil business as were both of my grandfathers; one was with Baker Oil Tools, the other was a lease Superintendent with Marathon. My career started in 1973 as a roustabout and pumping unit mechanic. In 1974 I got my big break and signed on with a drilling crew as a roughneck on a rig up in Utah. For the next five years I moved around with the rigs in Wyoming, Colorado and California. After working the rigs for about five years, when the thrill of throwing a spinning chain and working derricks wore off (and I still had all my fingers), I decided to pursue an education in engineering. I attended the University of Wyoming and graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1983. Armed with my experiences from the School of Hard Knocks and my diploma from the University of Wyoming I returned to Bakersfield to begin my professional career. My first engineering job was with a small consulting company, Cecil Engineering (headed up by Lee Cecil, formerly with Kern County Land Company and Tenneco). This gave me the opportunity to lay a strong foundation in all aspects of petroleum engineering; production, drilling and reservoir. After working as a consultant and working for smaller oil companies for about ten years I went to work for Arco Western Energy in Bakersfield as their Drilling Manager. This was a great job that eventually took me down to Long Beach working at the THUMS Long Beach Unit, operated by Arco at the time. I was at THUMS for about four years and then spent eight years with The Termo Company in Long Beach as their Operations Manager. In late 2010 I had the opportunity to return to Bakersfield and go to work for Berry Petroleum. It is great to be back in Bakersfield where there is a strong oil community and I see many familiar faces that I have known for years. I am very fortunate in that I have a strong family at home that allows me the chance to learn something new in the oil patch every day and put in the time necessary to truly enjoy my career. My wife Maureen and I have been married for 23 years and we have two great children, Marty (19) and Anna Marie (16, going on 26). I have been involved with the AADE for over twenty years and I look forward to many more years of involvement. When asked by people outside of our industry what it is that I enjoy about working in the oil and gas business my answer is always the same, it is the people that I have the opportunity to work with. We are all very fortunate to work in such a great industry and it is the people, like members of the AADE, that make it great
June 2013 Page 4 Speakers: Sam Storrick (Chevron) Chandler Smith (Scientific Drilling) Abstract: Sam and I will do a presentation regarding using EM Gyro technology and Whipstocks to Re-Drill wells with Production rigs that would have been abandoned previously prior to leveraging the technology economically. Bio: Sam Storrick is a Petroleum Engineer who has worked for Chevron for 4 plus years. Sam currently works as an Ops Engineer reporting to the Chevron Operations Manager. Sam is a graduate of the University of West Virginia and interests are Golf and Shooting. Chandler Smith is the Business Development Manager for the West Coast Region. Chandler works for Scientific Drilling and has worked in the Directional Drilling business since 1983. Chandler is married and has 2 sons who are 17 and 20 years old. Chandler s interests are Golf and Tournament Tennis.
