Length: 30 minutes Grade Level Intended: 2 nd Grade Academic Standard(s): 2.5.12 Find the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars. Performance Objective(s): Given 8 word problems dealing with an assortment of coins, such as pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars, students will determine the answers to each problem, with 100% accuracy. Assessment: Give each student the same 8 word problems on a worksheet. The students will state the correct amount of each monetary value for the given problem. Circulate around the room to check for progress and to answer questions. After completion of worksheet, collect them, and grade each students worksheet for accuracy. Hand back corrected worksheets next class. Advance Preparation by the Teacher: Worksheet with 8 word problems dealing with money, to complete in class. Homework worksheet, that they will be taking home to complete. Procedure: Introduction/Motivation Ask question: Who likes to have money? (Gardner: Verbal/Linguistic) Explain to students that in order to know how much money we have in our pockets, we need to be able to count it, so we know what the correct amount is. The last couple of weeks we, as a class, have been discussing how much value each coin is worth. We have also been adding up coins little by little to get the correct amount, all together. Next, we will be adding more coins
and dollars, all together, to find the correct monetary value for the answer. (Bloom: Comprehension) Step by Step Plan: 1. Pass out worksheets that students will be filling out. 2. Directions of Worksheet: Tell students that they will write the correct amount of money that is listed for each problem. (Bloom: Comprehension) 3. Do two examples on the board with the class. (Gardner: Visual/Spatial) Have the students raise their hands to answer. (Gardner: Verbal/Linguistic, Bloom: Application) Example 1: How much money is 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 1 nickel, and 1 penny? Answer: 51 cents Example 2: How much money is 2 dollars, 1 dime, and 5 pennies? Answer: $2.15. (Gardner: Logical/Mathematical, Interpersonal) 4. Ask students if they have any questions on what they will be doing. 5. Tell students to work quietly, and on their own, but if they have questions to raise their hand, and I will come to assist. (Gardner: Intrapersonal) 6. Circulate around the room, and briefly check each students work to see if they are understanding the material, and getting the correct answers. (Bloom: Knowledge) 7. Once students are done completing the worksheet in class, collect them to be graded. 8. For homework students will get a worksheet with 8 new monetary word problems to complete. (Bloom: Evaluation) Closure: After learning how to add up all of the money that we may find in our pockets, we can now add up all the coins to figure out how much money we have all together. We all enjoy having money in our pockets, so go home tonight and ask your mom and dad to empty their pockets/purses, and count how much money your mom and dad have all together. Adaptations/Enrichment: Girl with ADHD-Hyperactive: Ask her to distribute papers for t he students. Do not make her sit the entire lesson, allow her to move, as long as she stays close to her desk without bothering others, to complete her worksheet. As the teacher, keep a close eye on her.
Boy with Autism: Allow him to pick a different spot, if needed, so he feels comfortable, not around other students. Boy with High Ability: Assign him to create 5 money problems on his own, for himself to complete. Self-Reflection: Did the students understand the directions for the worksheet?
