Cider Mill Summer Reading 2013 Entering Grade 4 Dear Parents/Guardians, Imagine an athlete who takes several months off from training. It will take weeks, if not months of training to return to peak performance. The same is true with readers and their reading. Children who don t read during the summer vacation experience summer reading loss. For those students who are below or just approaching grade level benchmarks it is even more critical to establish a regular reading routine during the summer. Research has shown that providing access to texts, giving students choice, and helping them pick books at their just right reading level helps to reduce a summer slide or summer reading loss. (Allington & McGill-Franzen 2012) Cider Mill has provided you and your child(ren) with a few ways to access and have choices of texts to read over the summer: 1. A list of books attached to this letter with reading levels. These books are all available at The Wilton Library in the Children s Library. *The Children s Library also has a binder w/leveled book lists- great resource! 2. Access to StarWalk Kids Media @ http://www.starwalkkids.com/ -Click Sign In in upper right-hand corner -Username: Cider Mill - Password: apple - browse and read over 160 books! 3. Access to Follett Shelf ebooks through the Cider Mill Library website or https://wbb29824.follettshelf.com/shelf/servlet/presentshelfform.do?site=29824 Great for researching vacation destinations! -Username: ebook -Password: cidermill All students will be required to log their summer reading- either through the Wilton Library Summer Reading Program or the attached log. All students will be required to choose at least ONE Seymour Simon book to read over the summer and complete the attached graphic organizer. The log and graphic organizer will be handed in on the first day of school, Monday, August 26 th. Student Name: Independent Reading Level: Sincerely, Grade 4 Teachers
