Cider Mill Summer Reading 2013 Entering Grade 4 Dear Parents/Guardians, Imagine an athlete who takes several months off from training. It will take weeks, if not months of training to return to peak performance. The same is true with readers and their reading. Children who don t read during the summer vacation experience summer reading loss. For those students who are below or just approaching grade level benchmarks it is even more critical to establish a regular reading routine during the summer. Research has shown that providing access to texts, giving students choice, and helping them pick books at their just right reading level helps to reduce a summer slide or summer reading loss. (Allington & McGill-Franzen 2012) Cider Mill has provided you and your child(ren) with a few ways to access and have choices of texts to read over the summer: 1. A list of books attached to this letter with reading levels.
