Improve your technique in a nutshell By Murtuza Hashim This book explains how to find the best route in a winning position. It shows the common errors that you can prevent your self from making and save 20-30 moves in winning a game. It covers all sorts of endgames with rooks and pawns, knights and pawns, bishops and pawns etc. However it is not a treatise on the endgame. It shows small techniques that you can use in grinding down your opponent from a won position. By the end of the book you should have a feel for the various techniques the author displays throughout the book to look to use them in your own game. I plan on reading this book several times thorough to gain a better
understanding of the techniques. All the games are clearly explained with prose as well as lines and plenty of diagrams. A lot of positions that you find yourself in look just like the ones shown in the book, however you dont get the win out of those position. This book shows you the small T's you can use to win those positions and improve your technique along the way. 8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Clear read on perhaps the most difficult part of the game By RE I guess that I am not the usual reader of chess books. While I love the game and am having about 100 chess books at home, I am no longer active and stil stuck on decade long 2200 ranking. The only mode that I can happily read chess books these days is with two kids running around me, or with other entertaining activities in the background. So the only way I read chess books (which must be an insult to some authors -- like Watson's French book) is by READING. No chess board. Soltis's books in general are great from the chess READER viewpoint (like myself) and I enjoyed tremendously the clear writing and the detailed examples that can be followed directly from the book without getting a headache from complex variations. The only thing I would consider chaging is to have a few more examples to solve at the end of chapters. More practice would easily bring this book to 5 stars 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Great book about Chess Technique By Only_In_Manhattan This book is excellent because it covers: - how to bring a position from advantage to 1-0 - gives lots of recent examples played by Grandmasters and super GMs. - tries to organize the material by theme,gives hints and ideas behind the moves. - is very clear in lines and varations, explaining why this plan is better than an another. Technique is a key ingredient if you want to improve your rating. My rating is around 2200 USCF and I benefit from reading and solving positions from this book. Sometimes the theme is familiar, sometimes the author introduces ideas & recipes I should include in my thought process. I recommend this book to anyone who thinks or says often: " I was clearly winning.../... Then it was unclear and I lost ". Finally, this is NOT an endgame manual, but a collection of principles, practicle examples and plans&ideas ( such as when to exchange queens, pieces, what to do first, improve king position, create a passed pawn ). Most positions are extracted from real game endings. It's rare to see a book handling these concepts. and Soltis style is very concise and clear, with well-chosen examples. Definitely 5 stars in my opinion. For USCF rating between 1500 and 2500.
