ANALYSIS OF GREAT LEADERS : Group 6 WHAT IS THE LEADER S VISION STATEMENT? LEADER 1 Name : Xavier NIEL Company : ILIAD He wants to be every day more creative and to be seen as a major on the phone and internet market. He is ambitious He wants to share every things with his followers LEADER 2 Name : Mark ZUCKERBERG Company : FACEBOOK Vision of Mark Zuckerberg is highly related to the society because he created it. The mission of Facebook social media network is all about the global sharing and connections made possible by the Facebook platform. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them RATE THE LEADER S VISION STATEMENT? From 1 to 10 Rate each criteria of the leader s vision statement from 1 to 10 Rate each criteria of the leader s vision statement from 1 to 10 A good vision statement Identifies values and beliefs Is idealistic or utopian Represents broad and overarching (versus narrow and specific goals) 7 7 Is inspiring 1

Is future oriented 10 Is bold and ambitious Reflects the uniqueness of the organization Is well articulated and easily understood How would you improve the leader s vision statement? He is a brilliant communicant, thanks to his communication team and their famous punch line. He should make more public apparition in the way of Steve Jobs conferences, like he did before, to take advantage of his wonderful gift for speeches. Global vision, clear and understandable by all. PROJECT LEADING Choose a specific project Innovation How does the initiative/project go beyond existing good practice? Efficiency Does the final project offer good value for time, money and effort? Introduced on the phone market and to make the price down Xavier Niel creates a debate of society denouncing the high price of mobile phone contracts that competitors practice. He made TV conference and used several punch lines to arouse customers reaction like a strike leader to lead them is the right direction. He always respected journalist to have a good image in press and stay humble and play the guilty facing competitors Free mobile know a rapid success in 1 months it obtains 2.61 Million subscribers and gets 4% of market share in a highly competitive markets (figures from 2012). Nevertheless, this commercial success does not drive profitability and customers are not always satisfied with problems met on the network which rent to another competitor Some changes are required to maintain and sustain this advantage. The social Network At the beginning it was created for Harvard Campus students, to exchange and share all they want. After it was extend to majors universities of the country, then as reach the all country and today it is more than 600 Million throughout the world. For nothing to the biggest revolution of this beginning century. Today the free registering strategy and the social network concept is working very well as the company started in a student room and today the company is reaching the top company of the world and have one of highest share growth in the American financial market. 2

Give examples of project success of this leader He was the first to go to the French triplay market (T.V + internet + Phone ) With his phone offer, the market has changed. The market has expensed and after two years free holds 12% of the market share. Thanks to Free, telephone bills decreased. He offers two unlimited phone package low cost (one 0 euros for free customers and one at 20 euros for the others) Facebook plateform (websites, and its updated always users oriented) Acquisitions made over last years (ex : Instagram, What sapp) 3

SUSTAINABILITY LEADER (PERSON) Involvement To what extent was this person responsible for initiating or driving strategy/initiatives? Xavier Niel is strategic director of Iliad and for customers his name is directly linked to Free and its success. - Mark Zuckerberg's is the CEO of facebook. He leads the company since the beginning because he's one of the fouders so he takes all substancial decisions. Engagement How has this person communicated the details and benefits of the above to key stakeholders? He involved everybody behind his vision, he is an authentic leader and has also lot of ambition and charisma. - Actually he did'nt communicate so much. At first Mark Zuckerberg was shy and had issues with public communication but his fortune show how important is its success. Delivery How far was this person responsible for delivering the initiative? He managed TV conference with success, sharing Free s values and vision, create a kind of relationship with customers and respect journalist in order to avoid dirty paper, so he is highly responsible of the delivery of the initiative. - Mark Zuckerberg actually had the idea to create facebook. With some help, he was able to launch the site. He took the esssential initiatives. Now facebook has more than 1.23 billion users Accountability How far is this person responsible for the success of the project? Why? He is the only Free s employee known by every French customers, he is also probably most known than Orange or SFR CEO. It can prove how far he is responsible of the success of Free and become a symbol and a model for lot of entrepreneurs an young executives. - Mark Zuckerberg is the responsible of facebook's success. The website gets more and more involvement overtime. He's original idea conviced people. Without mark, nothing would have been possible. 4

LEADERSHIP STYLE What is his leadership s style according to the leadership theories Ambitious leader: began in launching mobile phone contract, then go on with the Triplay offers and now he is developing a new informatics school for free to educate talent of tomorrow Pragmatic leader: take is change in a little segment of an highly competitive market Charismatic and communicant. He has a democratic management style, almost laissez faire style. Mark Zuckerberg s early management style was actually modeled after that of the late Steve Jobs, whom he had a great admiration for and who coached him on how to build a better company. Zuckerberg greatly surpassed Jobs in the area of Social Media; everyone around the world knows about and is on Facebook, but Ping was just a blip that no one paid attention to when they were looking for music on itunes. His leadership approach is can be described as aggressive and encouraging. He demands constant growth and innovation, but he encourages the other CO s to take part in leading the company that he made sure to keep majority control of. This, I think, was very smart. Going off the movie, Social Media, Mark is very intelligent but also very socially inept. By encouraging others to participate and take leading roles in the company, he has a chance to endear people to him and prove that he can play well with others. However, that is not to say that he doesn t take advantage of his power. For example, he never consulted his Board of Directors on the acquisition of Instagram, and only informed them after shelling out $1 billion. Although he was supposed to have gotten the go ahead for such a major move, I think we can all agree that this was a good idea. 5

PERSONAL LEADER S QUALITIES Xavier Niel needs to be a good communicator because he brings innovation. So he has to succeed imposing his ideas. He have to be visionary He is cleaver and take an interest of what is around him. He needs to be persuasive, ambitious and seft confident. Good analytical skills Strong interest in sciences and data through computer programming. Non-threatening and goal-oriented. Learning from past mistakes 6

WHAT ARE THE CRITICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO STYLES? Mark Zuckerberg and Xavier Niel are both entrepreneur. Xavier Niel acquires his first society in Minitel software edition at 23 years old. Mark Zuckerberg for is part create a social network at 1 years old. Both of us have a democratic leadership style. They are both deeply involved in the company project and vision and contribute to share it with all stakeholders and community of users. Xavier Niel is a brilliant communicant it is his main skill and it is something natural for him. He has a corporate style and appears serious. Mark Zuckerberg for is part and especially at his beginning was ill at ease with his communication and with an unconventional style. Nowadays Mark Zuckerberg had learn with Steve Jobs how to communicate well and currently it is one of its major force as Xavier Niel. 7

WHO DO YOU THINK THE BETTER LEADER IS? WHY? Same style, hard to say. Xavier Niel may have more experience but Mark Zuckerberg as the founder might be more charismatic.
