Music at the Monastery Looking for the new book lists? New CD s? New videogames? You ll find all the new stuff right here... cumberlandlibrary.org/new-stuff The Cumberland Public Library is hosting its fourth summer series of Music at the Monastery concerts providing a free opportunity to hear some great local bands and musicians on the front lawn between the Library and the Porter s Lodge on the Monastery Grounds. The final concert of the series will be by the Jesse Liam Band on Thursday, August 16 at 6:30 pm. The Library was fortunate enough to receive a legislative grant thanks to Senator Ryan Pearson. We used the grant to purchase craft books and created over a dozen kits. Topics include knitting, crocheting, looms, soil testing, metal detection and even a ukulele. Keep an eye out this month for a display of all the great new items, and then check them out! The Jesse Liam Band is led by Jesse Liam Gauthier, a 27-year-old Rhode Island College graduate, and his father Jack, a Grammy-nominated recording engineer and former producer of Dispatch who also manages blues legend Duke Robillard. Jesse was named Best Male Vocalist 2013 for Limelight Magazine and Best Male Vocalist 2012 at Motif Music Awards. Jesse was the winner of Rhode Island College s 2010 Idol competition, and advanced to the finals at the 2009 series of New England s Community Auditions. He has sung the National Anthem for the PawSox, URI and PC basketball, and PC hockey games. Jesse and Jack were also top-12 finalists in a recent talent showcase held at Scullers Jazz Club. They have played clubs, concert series and countless stages across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. With their signature family-harmony sound on display, Jesse and Jack perform as a duo or with a full band alongside drummer, Michael DeQuattro, and bassist, Joseph Bentley. Their deep catalog of cover songs spans popular music from the Everly Brothers and Beatles to the current charts including Jason Mraz, Train, Bruno Mars. Samples of their music and more information about the band can be found at http://jesseliam.com. Fortnite: The Game Everyone is Talking about Even if you don t have any kids, you have probably heard about the game Fortnite: Battle Royale. You might not know anything more about the game other than the title, but it is a free-to-download video game that has captured the attention of kids and teens (and adults, too!) the world over. At its core, Fortnite, is a multiplayer, interactive, shooter game with more than 40 million registered players. In each round, up to 100 player avatars leap out of a plane and land on a small island. Once they have come down, the player avatars fight each other until there is only one still left standing. Hidden throughout various locations on the island are weapons and other items players can use to help them in the fight and to survive as they explore the island s layout. As time passes, the island shrinks, forcing the remaining players closer together so they have no choice but to confront each other. You might be asking yourself why this game is so popular. Well, it helps that the game is free to anyone interested in playing, and it is available to play on everything from tablets, smartphones, and computers to various gaming systems. The game also has a fun, quirky sense of humor that becomes even more amusing with the various skins (costumes) and items that can be earned for the avatars to have as players progress. This results in almost a cartoonish feel to the game. One major perk in the game is that friends can team up to form a duo or a squad that allows them to work together. This is made easier with the use of a chat feature or headsets with microphones. The benefit of having a team is that players can last longer in each round. Then, there is the Fortnite dance. While it is something that avatars do when they are successful, the dance has spread into the real world. A quick search on the term in YouTube will give you no shortage of examples players and others can watch with amusement.
