All of our Djembes and other hardwood drums are handcrafted from sustainable mahogany. We have spent a great deal of time and effort building relationships with our producers to ensure that our high standards are upheld. We are delighted to be able to say with confidence that the timber used to make our drums can be traced through government certification all the way back to its managed, sustainable plantation. In addition to this ethically sourced wood we ensure that all other construction materials used such as paints, varnishes, ropes and traditional goat hide skins are non-toxic. Dundun Range Our large Dundun, medium Sangban and small Kenkeni are beautiful, double cow hide skinned drums that make up the bass section of an African percussion ensemble. Played with a drumstick and open hand these drums have a rich booming tone. All of our drums are hand carved from hardwood sourced from fully traceable, certified sustainable plantations. Once the shells have been made extra care is taken with the bearing edge of every drum, which is sanded and routed for at least 30 minutes to give a perfect edge and the most responsive sound when strung. Our Jammer series, Bougarabous and Dundun Drums use the recognised standard 2 ring system, whereas our Pro Africa range, the pinnacle of quality craftsmanship, uses a superior 3 ring system for extra tension and improved sound quality. Using fibreglass to construct the drum body in a traditional shape makes a portable, highly durable Djembe that shares all of the depth and range of tones with its hardwood cousins. This lightweight body is finished with a decorative cloth inspired by the traditional Bogolan cloth of Western Africa. Djembe tuning using the traditional Mali weave. Keeping your Djembe in top condition is easy. Simply play often, the oil from your hands will protect the drum skin, and keep it safe from knocks, rips and extreme temperature changes. Our Djembe Carry Cases and Hats are perfect for keeping your Djembe safe. Tuning your Djembe is not as difficult as you might think, we recommend using the traditional Mali weave for adding tension to the ropes, the process of tuning the drum. All of our Djembes come with plenty of additional rope for tuning and the ropes themselves are pre-stretched, making the process easier and more responsive. We lightly tune the drums using this method, so you will find the weave started for you. If you wish to raise the tone further, or the Djembe looses tension over time, please follow these simple steps: 1. Unwind the extra rope on the Djembe and pass the end under the first two verticals. Make sure you choose the verticals that are furthest apart to make the most change in the pitch of the drum. 2. Pull the slack through then pass the rope back over the right vertical and under the left vertical. Again, pull through the slack rope. 3. Pull the rope sharply to the right. This will make the verticals cross each other and create a diamond where the tuning rope passes through. 4. Move horizontally across to the next pair of verticals and repeat the process. Moving round the entire Djembe will add tension and raise the pitch of the drum. 11
Maracas and Shakers Coconut Maraca A very popular product and a classic maraca, constructed from a whole coconut with a sustainable teak wood handle. The coconut chamber is filled with fine beads that create a vibrant sound when shaken. MMA001 8cm x 8cm x 25cm Beaded Coconut Maraca A high quality maraca constructed in coconut, with a sustainable teak wood handle. The bead filled maraca is also covered in a string mesh threaded with Jentri beads. These bang and scrape the coconut sound chamber when played adding a second layer of sound to the traditional maraca. The sound chamber is constructed from a single piece of rattan, coiled and glued to form a sphere then filled with very fine beads. Rattan Double Caxixi A pair of individually woven rattan caxixi joined by a looped rattan handle. The sound chambers are filled with fine beads which collide with each other as well as the ribbed inner surface of the caxixi to create a unique sound. Each caxixi is also capped by a highly polished disk of coconut for added style. MMA006 16cm x 8cm x 26cm 5 Head Maraca A vibrant sounding instrument consisting of 5 synthetic sound chambers attached to rattan sticks and bound with a bamboo handle. Each sound chamber is decorated in a traditional painted pattern and topped with a Jentri bead for added decoration. The sound is light and playful and the 5 chambers give multiple layers of sound when played. MMA010 8cm x 8cm x 30cm Pangi Seed Shaker The seed case of the Pangium Edule tree is used to great effect in this instrument. Many Pangi seeds are bound to a bamboo handle with natural twine. It creates a deep and dry rattle when played. The bamboo handle is further decorated with an etched pattern and finished with twine binding. Pangi Seed Rope Shaker The seed cases of the Pangium Edule tree are joined together with natural twine and attached to a delicately plaited rope handle. This instrument, similar to those used across Africa, is held in the hand or attached to the wrists or ankles and used in dance ceremonies. It creates a deep dry rattle sound. The bamboo is capped at either end to create a sound chamber filled with fine beads that give a light playful sound when shaken. MMA003 8cm x 8cm x 20cm Hurio Shaker This versatile instrument is constructed from sustainable mahogany. The hand turned body creates a ridged guiro surface that is played with the attached scraper. Gourd Shekere A classic and very popular percussion instrument. The Shekere uses a large gourd (or Kalibash) covered with a mesh of Jentri beads. The beads bang and rub across the gourd to produce a rhythmic scraping reminiscent of a maraca but with a significantly different sound. A highly polished sustainable wooden egg is filled with very fine beads to create a light, vibrant sound. The grain on these shakers makes them particularly attractive. Hand Percussion Frog Caller A novel and fun instrument constructed in sustainable sono wood with hide skin. The attached handle is pulled taught and tweaked to create an authentic sounding frog call. It can also be swung vigorously around the handle creating a loud rasping sound. * Available in painted or natural. MFC001 4.5cm x 5cm x 9cm Painted Thunder Drum This is one of our hottest items and a beautiful object in its own right. The body of the thunder drum is decorated with a hand painted traditional design. Each piece is different. The wire spring creates a roar of thunder when the drum is shaken. Coconut Hand Drum This instrument is used to teach percussion in Indonesia. The half coconut body is topped with a highly polished sono wood lid. The felt tipped beater is used to hit the lid to create a rich note closer to a tong drum. The hole to the sound chamber can also be covered with the hand to change the tone of the drum. MTD004 7cm x 12cm x 15cm Agogo This excellent instrument is a classic from school days. When held in the middle and struck on either end with the included beater, it creates 2 distinct warm notes.
