Introduction "The only source of knowledge is experience." Albert Einstein "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." George Bernard Shaw
We are all familiar with the term bucket list. For those of you who don t know, it is a list of all the things you want to see and do before you kick the bucket that is, before you die. You can find many books that suggest any number of places you absolutely must see before you die. Some are even categorized to specific geographic region. Then there are books that suggest adventurous hobbies that should fill your bucket list. There are even books about developing bucket lists for couples (I guess that s for those couples who plan on both dying at the same moment), and even bucket lists for children. But when you begin to look for directions on how to go about realizing your dreams and actually achieving them, there seems to be something missing. No one offers up a plan. Everyone can tell you what you should see and do, but no one tells you how to go about getting there. Until now. What you have in your hands is the guide to achieving many of the things you may have on your bucket list. However before you can check off things on your bucket list you must first actually have a list. We ve all heard conversations (or been part of one) where someone remarks that a certain destination or activity is on their bucket list. If you ask them to show you their list, you ll find that it was never committed to an actual written list; it s all in their head. (Kind of like the idea that they ll actually accomplish what s on their imaginary list.) And there is the first rule to realizing your dreams write them down. Actually sit at the keyboard or put a pen to paper and make a list. A whole chapter has been devoted to what you might want to include on your list. Even those things you d like to attempt but are afraid of. Do you have a fear of heights 3
Tony Diaz but think you d like to try sky diving? How about spend a week traveling around Europe but have a fear of flying? There is a chapter that will help you recognize your phobias and give you suggestions on ways to overcome them. Although travel makes up a large part of just about everyone s bucket list (and a good portion of this book), there are many other things your list can include that will bring enrichment and pleasure to your life. Regardless of your financial situation, you may be able to include several items which are affordable and achievable now. But that Caribbean cruise or week in Paris on the other hand will take a little longer to realize. You ll need to develop a financial plan to accomplish any of those big ticket items. Without a plan you ll have only two chances of achieve your dream; one is a fat chance and the other is a slim chance, and they both mean the same thing virtually no chance. I ll show you a method you can employ to help you develop a plan that will have you reaching for your passport more often than you can imagine. You ll also learn to stop being a tourist and become a traveler. It s easy to spot the tourist in the crowd. You see them all the time at the airport. They are the ones going on a two week trip and with a half-dozen suitcases in tow. They struggle to herd their luggage a few feet toward the counter every time some lucky customer is called to leave the line. And when their turn finally comes, they loudly complain about the outrageous fees that go with checked baggage yet still manage to breathe a grateful sigh of relief that their bags are have finally been taken off their hands. But their troubles are far from over. 4
A Life Fulfilled They arrive at their destination missing one bag; always the most important one of their assemblage. Soon they are the lone traveler standing at the baggage carousel, watching the last three unclaimed pieces of luggage endlessly circling. It isn t until the carousel shuts down that their last hope that their missing bag will arrive on some belated baggage cart fades. (And we know the names associated with the two chances that that will happen.) Their vacation has only started and they are already miserable. Had they been prepared, all of that grief could have been avoided. Most of your travels shouldn t require you to pack more than will fit in a couple of carry-ons; one for the overhead compartment and one to put under your seat. If you can master this, then at your destination you ll avoid the baggage carousel and go straight to the rental car counter or your hotel and beat the rest of the arrival crowd. For the seasoned traveler, packing light becomes a way of life. And what about all of your great destinations? What growth will they bring you? Getting the most from life should be more than just crossing the names of places off of a list; these are the travel experiences of your life. If you only went to those locales simply to see the sights, you could have bought a picture book and saved yourself a great deal of money. One chapter deals with learning to use all your senses to appreciate your destination, so that when you return you ll have more than just the pictures you took during your trip; you ll be able to re-live the travel experience its sounds, smells, and the taste of its cuisine. As you become a more seasoned traveler, you ll find yourself making an effort to become exposed to the many differences life has to offer; to spend more time 5
Tony Diaz mingling with the locals and less in the company of your fellow travelers. It is only when you develop this type of a lifestyle that you will suddenly realize that variety truly is the spice of life. And what will you do with all of your acquired experiences? Will you simply forget them until there s a social function where you might shine and impress others with your travelers tales? Will you keep them to yourself until you are asked to recount your trips? Or will you make your trip truly memorable and give your life a real purpose? It s a fact that all things fade with time including pain, joy, and memories. Your experiences and memories represent your history they define your life, which will fade with time as well. In only a few generations, you will be nothing more than a name on a family tree. And so this book closes with a recommendation of how to go about recording your history; your memories and experiences. You will be shown not only how to do this, but also why you should do so. So let me close with this thought: life should be satisfying and filled with as many experiences as we can muster into the few decades we have. Instead of waiting for something unforgettable to happen, make plans for it to happen and then make it happen. Have an adventurefilled life with unforgettable experiences. Give yourself a story to tell. Because people are always interested in hearing a story that begins with I ll never forget... 6
