VMC 505 BASED PACKAGING SCALE Overview The VMC generic packaging controller is programmed to provide the necessary signals to control a fill by weight packaging system. Control can be totally tailored using the VMC SMARTS language The instrumentation used is a standard VMC 505 SMARTS controller. Hardware 1) Controller a) PC104 compliant controller with onboard A/D, serial communications and control interface. 2) Display a) Graphic/alphanumeric backlit LCD display divided into one large numeric weight display and three alphanumeric prompt displays. 3) Keypad a) Five predefined control keys and 12 numeric data entry keys. 4) Front Panel Controls a) Start Start product fill cycle. b) Stop Stop product fill cycle. 5) Control Outputs Eight 110VAC 3A standard. Other configurations available. i) Target Cut Off: Final cut off at desired product weight. ii) Dribble Feed Cut Off: Begins slow feed. iii) Bag Clamp: Bag clamping device. iv) Settler Control: Controls product delivery v) Discharge: Controls discharge sequence 2

vi) Clean Out: Controls clean out sequence vii) Feeding: Indicates a fill is in progress. viii) Spare Output: Undefined 6) Inputs a) Eight optically isolated 110vac standard. Other configurations available. i) In Position - used to signal discharge 7) Power a) 90-280 VAC auto sensing 8) Battery Backup of configuration and in process values. 9) Enclosure: a) 8x10x4 stainless steel NEMA 12. Control 1) Setup a) Setup and control information will be entered via a numeric keypad with direct entry or menu driven methods. i) Setpoint Control: (1) Press F10 on the numeric keypad (a) The display will prompt TARGET WEIGHT. Enter the desired final weight cut off value. (b) The display will prompt DRIBBLE WEIGHT. Enter the dribble feed cut off weight value: Dribble cut off, begins the slow fill to the final target weight. Enter the amount of weight before the final target value dribble feed is to begin. (c) The display will prompt PREACT WEIGHT. This is the weight value before the target cut off the actual cut off takes place. This is used to compensate for shut off delays and product in suspension. (d) The display will prompt SETTLER START WEIGHT. Enter the weight the product feed apparatus turns on. 3

(e) The display will prompt SETTLER STOP WEIGHT. Enter the weight the product feed apparatus turns off. (f) The display will prompt SCALE EMPTY WEIGHT. This is the weight that indicates a discharge is complete if discharge by weight is selected. ii) Auto Tare Control (1) Press F9 on the numeric keypad (a) Enter the calibration password. (b) The display will prompt AUTO TARE. To disable auto tare enter a 0, to enable auto tare enter a 1 to tare every cycle or a number 2-9 to tare only every nth bag. (i) If auto tare is enabled the TARE key will be disabled. (ii) If auto tare is disabled the TARE key will be active until a fill cycle is started. (c) The display will prompt NEGITIVE TARE LIMIT. Enter the allowable negative weight that may tare. (d) The display will prompt POSITIVE TARE LIMIT. Enter the allowable positive weight that may tare. (e) The display will prompt TARE NO MOTION LIMIT. Enter the amount of motion that is acceptable while performing a tare or printing, entered in 0.25 division intervals. iii) Auto Preact Control (1) Press F8 on the numeric keypad (a) Enter the calibration password. (b) The display will prompt AUTO PREACT (i) Enter 0 to disabel (ii) Enter the number of samples to use to enable (c) The display will prompt TREND ADJUST %. Enter the percentage of the error trend to be used for cut off compensation. 4

(d) The display will prompt NEGATIVE PREACT LIMIT :. Enter the largest negative error that will be used in preact adjustment. (e) The display will prompt POSITIVE PREACT LIMIT. Enter the largest positive error that will be used in preact adjustment. (f) The display will prompt TREND NO MOTION LIMIT. Enter the amount of motion that is acceptable while performing an auto preact, entered in 0.25 division intervals. iv) Discharge Control (1) Press F7 on the numeric keypad (a) Enter the calibration password. (b) The display will prompt DISCHARGE. Enter a 0 to disable timed discharge and enable by weight discharge. Enter the time in 0.1 second intervals to enable timed discharge. (i) The discharge will remain energized until the time has expired or the zero tolerance weight is reached. (c) The display will prompt BAG IN PLACE. Enter a 0 to disable or a 1 to enable the bag in inpositioin switch. If enabled a discharge will be inhibited until the bag inposition switch has been activated. v) Timer and Option Configuration: (1) Press F5 on the numeric keypad. (a) Enter the calibration password. (b) The display will prompt CLEAN-OUT DELAY TIME. This is the time after target cut off the clean out signal will be energized. (c) The display will prompt START DELAY (.1 SECS). This is the amount of time after the bag is clamped the fill cycle will delay before starting. (d) The display will prompt AFTER CUT OFF DELAY (.1 SECS). This is a delay after the cleaning cycle the system will pause. (e) The display will prompt 1=ENABLE AUTO PRINT. Enter a 0 to disable or a 1 to enable output of weight after a fill cycle. (f) The display will prompt DISCHARGE DELAY. This is the amount of time the discharge signal will be energized at the end of a fill cycle. (Only applicable if timed 5

vi) Batch Counter Setup: (1) Press F6 on the numeric keypad. If the batch counter is enabled the instrument will enter the batch setup mode. (a) Enter the calibration password. (b) The display will prompt BATCH COUNT. Enter the desired number of batches. This will enable the batch operational sequence. (c) The display will prompt 0=RESET 1=CONTINUE. (i) Pressing 0 will reset abort the batch setting the count to zero beginning a new sequence. Operational Sequence Single Fill Mode 1) Configure control options if not previously configured. 2) Enter the setup information if not previously entered. With the batch mode selection set to 0 (Off). 3) Pull the stop control out. 4) Insure system is at zero if auto tare is disabled. Manually tare if necessary. 5) Start a) Auto Start enabled i) Auto tare must be enabled. ii) Place bag on filling spout activating the auto start switch and the bag in position switch; the bag will be clamped and a start initiated. b) Manual Start i) Bag in position enabled; (1) Place bag in position. If auto tare is disabled tare the system then press start. The bag will be clamped and a start initiated only if the bag in position switch is closed. ii) Bag in position disabled: (1) If auto tare is disabled tare the system then press start. The bag will be clamped and a start initiated without checking the bag in position. 6

6) The system will pause for the start delay period. 7) Auto Tare a) If auto tare is enabled the system will tare to zero. 8) Settler a) When the settler on weight is reached the settler relay will energize. b) When the settler off weight is reached the settler relay will de-energize. c) If the fast stage cut off is reached before the settler weight off value is reached the settler will turn off with the fast feed relay. 9) The feed and dribble stage cut off outputs are energized. The dribble stage cut off remains energized until the dribble target weight is reached. 10) The feed cut off remains energized until the target weight less preact or plus postact is reached. 11) The feed output is de-energized. 12) The clean out signal is energized for the clean out period. 13) The after fill delay takes place. 14) The auto trend sensing adjustment is performed if enabled. 15) An auto print is performed if enabled. 16) The discharge output is energized. a) If timed discharged is selected the discharge remains energized for the discharge delay period. b) If weight discharge is selected the discharge remains energized until the zero tolerance is reached. 17) The bag clamp is released. 18) The fill sequence halts until the in position switch opens. 19) The fill is complete 20) Pressing stop at any point in the fill sequence will abort the fill sequence. 7
