Original Recipe Have yu ever gtten an idea in yur head and then had a hard time shaking it? It is like a sng that inserts itself int yur day and will nt be abandned. N matter what yu d that silly sng is right there with yu. This quilt is like that fr me. The idea grew frm a cmment I made in the instructins fr my Twisted Charm quilt (psted n Mda Bake Shp n April 26, 2012) I had made the discvery, purely by accident, that if yu cut yur fabric while it was flded yu culd end up with half f yur blcks turning at a different angle. I warned yu that it wuld make yur quilt lk "jiggity" like an I-phne when yu try t mve the little icns arund. Then I gt a lvely bundle f Kapalua Batiks and wanted t make smething beachy. Jiggity is the blending f the blcks I warned yu abut and the summer time fun f Kapalua Batiks. It makes me think f bits f sea glass that are being tumbled in the cean, brken bits caught in an undertw and plished until they delight us. I can smell salt mixed with a subtle hint f ccnut il drifting n a breeze...h, that wasn't the quilt...that was ne f my bys walking by with a bwl f pp crn...different kind f summer time fun.
1 charm pack (40, 5" squares) (Kapalua Batiks) 1 ½ yds cream slid (Bella Fig Tree Cream #9900-67) 1 3/4 yds chclate brwn slid (Bella Brwn #9900-71) ½ yd inner brder (Kapalua Batiks #4320-31) ½ yd binding (cut 2.5" with wf), and setting squares (Kapalua Batiks #4320-48) 3 yds backing (Kapalua Batiks #4320-31) Open the charm pack Remve the 10 charms that shw the least amunt f cntrast with cream backgrund fabric. The charms are set right against the cream fabric. Where there is n cntrast there will be n gem sparkling n the sand. Of the remaining 30 charms, put every ther patch in a different pile. G thrugh the whle pack until yu have 2 piles f 15 patches. This will put apprximately half f each clr way in each pile. Cutting Directins: Blck A - Single Twist (15 blcks) Frm cream
cut 3 5" width f fabric (wf) strips cut 2 wf strips int 14 3" pieces each cut 2 3" pieces frm the remaining wf strip yu shuld have 30, 3"x5" rectangles sub-cut each rectangle nce n the diagnal fr a ttal f 60 triangles. If yu are using a patterned fabric fr the backgrund DO NOT LAYER YOUR RECTANGLES WITH LIKE SIDES TOGETHER WHEN YOU CUT THEM. This will result in half f the triangles leaning the wrng directin. If bth sides f yur fabric are the same (like in a Bella slid) this isn t an issue. Frm charm pack Please measure yur charms. D nt assume that just because they are labeled 5" squares that they are. Charms are pinked at the edges. Find ut if 5" is 5" at the inside r the utside f the zigzag. It will make a difference. 15 5"x5" patches Blck B - Duble Twist (15 blcks) Frm brwn
cut 3, 5" wf strips cut 2 wf strips int 14 3" pieces each cut 2 3" pieces frm remaining wf strip yu shuld have 30, 3"x5" rectangles THIS IS THE POINT OF THIS QUILT - PAY ATTENTION If yu are using Bella r a similar slid yu dn't have t wrry abut hw yu cut things; hwever if yu are using a printed fabric yu need t take nte f which directin yu cut the rectangles fr Blck A. Cut all rectangles fr Blck B in the ppsite directin. sub-cut each rectangle nce n the ppsite diagnal fr a ttal f 60 triangles. *Mind the warning in Blck A Frm cream cut 2, 4" wf strips frm 2 wf strips cut 15, 2 3/8" x 4" rectangles sub-cut each rectangle nce n the diagnal, in the same directin yu just did fr the brwn triangles in Blck B, fr a ttal f 60 triangles. *Mind the warning in blck A Frm charm squares trim 15 charms t 3 3/4" squares Sashing Frm brwn cut 3, 6 ½" x wf strips cut 36, 1 ½" x 6 ½" rectangles (28 frm ne wf strip and 8 frm a secnd.) SAVE rest f secnd strip with the third strip. Frm setting square fabric Cut 2, 1 ½" x wf strips Sew setting strips t remainder f brwn strips frm previus alng the lng edge. Irn seams tward the brwn Cut 35, 1 ½" x 7 ½" rectangles frm pieced strips. These will lk like brwn match sticks with clred heads. Frm remainder f setting stip cut 7, 1 1/2" squares Inner Brder Frm setting fabric cut 4, 1 ½" squares Frm inner brder fabric cut 5, 1 ½" x wf strips Outer Brder
Frm cream cut 5, 4 ½" x wf strips Frm setting square fabric cut 4, 4 1/2" squares Binding Cut 6, 2 ½" wf strips Time fr a break. If yu have cmpleted all f this cutting and prepping, the rest f the quilt shuld g tgether easily. Piecing Directins: Smetimes a sewing machine can eat the pints f a triangle as it is being fed thrugh the feed dgs. If yu have truble with this, try using a leader. A leader is a small piece f fabric that leads the way fr the rest f yur sewing. Take a scrap f fabric and feed it thrugh the feed dgs ahead f yur triangles - like yu are chain piecing an extra little bit befre yur real pieces. It seems t help. Blck A - Single Twist
The gal is t make 15 blcks like this ne. They will each have a different center. Align a cream triangle with the stubby angle 1/4" ver the edge f a 5" charm and the pinty angle 1/2" ver the parallel edge Sew 1/4" seam alng the lng cream edge. If yu are careful nt t stretch the fabric, yu dn't have t pin. I've nticed that when using a machine with a 1/4" ft, I can align my needle at the intersectin f the tw pieces and edge f the fabric right next t the flange f the ft and everything cmes ut where it shuld. The seam will start and stp at where the edges f the fabric intersect. Irn the seam tward the cream. Repeat n next side, 3 times until all fur sides are added Trim t 6 1/2" square. Really. D this. I sized the pieces s that they wuld be big - t make the piecing easier. If yu dn't trim them it wn't wrk right. Yes, it is tedius and bring. I dn't like t d it either. D it anyway. If yu have a 6 1/2" trimming square center the center s that as clse t 1/4" f cream is between the pints and the edge. It is fine if it isn't perfect. Even if yu sew a crner int the seam allwance when yu piece the blcks tgether it will still lk square. The blcks are set in brwn- yur eyes will fill in any crners that are missing. Make 15. Blck B - Backwards Duble Twist The gal, again, is 15 blcks. These will each have a different center and tw twists. Add the cream triangles t the trimmed charms in the ppsite directin frm Blck A. Trim blcks t 5" squares. Add the brwn triangles just like yu did the cream nes a mment ag. Irn twards the cream. Trim t 6 1/2" squares.
Make 15. Center Arrange blcks in a grid 5 blcks by 6 blcks alternating every ther blck. NOTE: t my OCD friends this quilt des nt cme ut even. If yu are really OCD yu have already nticed this, and prbably chsen nt t make it...r yu have altered the pattern. If yu aren't, yu are ding it right if the crner blcks nly match n ne side. Step away frm yur arrangement and see if yu still like it. If yu can't get very far frm it try taking a quick phtgraph f it with yur cell phne. Lk at the picture t see if the distributin f clrs pleases yu. If yu have a design wall this is a gd time t use it. If yu dn't there are ther ptins. Yu can put them n the flr r lay them n a bed. Yu can clse the drapes and pin yur blcks t them. Or use the shwer curtain. Use yur imaginatin. Yu can als just wing it. Randm is gd - but I haven't met many peple wh are actually happy with randm. Vertical Sashing Once yu are happy with the layut sew a brwn "stick" t the right side f each blck in each rw. Sew the rws tgether: (blck, stick)(blck, stick)(blck, stick)(blck, stick)(blck, stick) Sew a stick t the left side f the leading blck Irn seams tward the brwn sashing. Hrizntal sashing. Yu need t make 7 rws f hrizntal sashing. Sew 5 matchsticks tgether alng the skinny side with the setting blck (head) pinting tward the right. Sew ne head n the end f the last match stick. Irn seams tward the brwn sticks.
Place ne matchstick rw between each rw f blcks. Attach hrizntal sashing. Snuggle sashing seams and pin in place Irn seams tward hrizntal sashing. Brders Inner brder Measure yur quilt's length and width. Write it dwn. It shuld be smething like 36 1/2" x 43 1/2. Sew ne 1 1/2" brder strip t each f the skinny ends. Irn seams tward the brder. Trim excess. Sew the remaining three skinny strips tgether, end fr end. Cut tw strips frm this that are the length f yur quilt as it was when yu wrte it dwn. (It shuld be 2" shrter than the tp is nw.) Sew a 1 1/2" setting square t the ends f each f these strips. Irn seams tward the brder strips. Snuggle crner seams tgether. Pin in place. Pin remaining length f brders in place. Sew n lng brders. Irn seams tward brder fabric. Outer brder Measure yur quilt's length and width. Write it dwn. It shuld be smething like 38 1/2" x 45 1/2", give r take. Sew 4 1/2" brder strips tgether end fr end...making ne very lng and skinny strip. Cut 4 lengths frm this strip that are equal t the measurements yu just wrte dwn. (2 that are the length f the tp and 2 that equal the width.) Sew shrt edges f the brder n first. Irn seams tward the brder. Sew a 4 1/2" setting square t each end f each f the lng strips. Irn seams tward the brder strips. Snuggle crner seams tgether. Pin in place. Pin remaining length f brders in place.
Sew n lng brders. Irn seams tward brder fabric. Layer and Quilt as desired. 1 crib r thrw sized quilt, finished size: 46" x 53".
