BUILDING A 6x6 FOOT WOODEN SHED A STEP BY STEP GUIDE 1. PREPARING THE BUILDING SITE 4 layer compatible gravel, min. covered surface 6 2 x6 2 1.a Remove 4 of soil in an area wider than 6 2 x 6 2. 1.b Add 4 layer compatible leveled gravel and rake it until it is leveled fairly. 2. ONGRADE CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS 9 concrete blocks, 1 x6, placed in 3 parallel rows This type of foundations is the quickest and simplest to build. They are made of solid concrete blocks (an alternative would pressure treated timber). 2.a In order to position the concrete blocks use mason s lines. Mark the positions of the 1 long and 6 wide concrete blocks on the strings, and then mark them onto the ground. Place them in 3 parallel rows, 3 blocks in each row (as in the foundation plan). 2.b Put stakes in the intersections and remove the mason s lines. 3. FLOOR FRAMING 6 x2 x6 2 mudsills x3 2 x6 x5 10 joists x5 2 x6 x6 2 rim joists x2 3/4 x6 2 x6 2 plywood floor cover 3 x3 x3 galvanized joist clip angles x 4 The floor frame construction is usually made of pressure treated lumber. 3.a Hammer the mudsills (lowest wood members) right on the concrete foundations, as marked in the floor plan. Use 2 to 4 anchor bolts on the outer corners to anchor the mudsills. 3.b Attach the rim joists to the outer edges of the mudsills and frame the floor perimeter. 3.c Add floor joists (1 6 ) on the top of the mudsills, between the rim joists, spanning the width of the building. Use 16d common nails to attach the joists. Additionally, add four joist clip angles to reinforce the flooring structure. 3.d The floor frame is covered with a 3/4in. thick exteriorgrade plywood. Fasten the plywood with 8d galvanized common nails. 4. WALL FRAMING 2 x4 x6 2 bottom plates x2 2 x4 x5 6 bottom plates x2 2 x4 x6 2 top plates x2 2 x4 x5 6 top plates x2 2 x4 x7 6 studs x23 2 x4 x6 8 studs x6 2 x6 x4 2 header x1 2 x6 x1 10 header x2 2 x4 x1 6 sill plate x2 2 x4 x4 cripple stud x1 The wall frame construction is usually made of roughsawn cedar. Stickbuilt construction: The wall frame is built of individual sticks of lumber and it consists of vertical studs, horizontal top and bottom plates, as well as headers above the door and windows. Each wall frame is assembled on the floor deck, and then placed on the floor and nailed. This method is the fastest, easiest and cheapest. 4.a Build each wall frame by nailing the bottom and top plates to the studs using 16d common nails. Follow the wall frame construction elevations to position the studs and openings correctly. The side elevations are identical. Page 18

4.b Fasten the wall frames to the flooring construction by using 16d common nails, and attach them to each other on the corners, reinforce the corners using joist clip angles. 5. Use 4d galvanized nails. Start placing the siding boards 8 x5/8 symmetrically (from the centers of the walls), as shown on the elevation siding scheme, and for the corners use the 5 5/8 x 5/8 (side elevations) and 5 x5/8 (front and back side). On the side elevations the corner siding boards overhang for 5/8 6. DOORS AND WINDOWS Doors: 1 x4 5/8 x7 frame x 2 1 x4 5/8 x4 frame x 1 1 x2 x7 stops x2 Page 19

1 x2 x4 stops x1 6 x5/8 x6 5 panel material middle x 6 3 ¾ x5/8 x6 5 panel material ends x 2 6 x5/8 x3 6 zbrace x 2 6 x5/8 x6 3 zbrace x 1 1 x3 x6 8 trim x 5 strap hinges x 3 Batten door with a Z-shaped pattern 6.1.a Install the frame using 10d galvanized nails, making sure that the frame is firm and straight. Add the trims and the stops to the frame. 6.1.b Cut 8 pieces of the siding (6 pieces 6 x5/8 and 2 pieces 3 ¾ x5/8 ). Place the 2 shorter plates on the ends of the door. Align the vertical door boards so that they make a solid rectangle (as shown in the elevation). 6.1.c Connect the vertical boards with Zbrace (as shown in the elevation) with 3d galvanized nails. 6.1.d Install the hinges (as shown in the door elevation) and hang the door. Connect the hinges with galvanized screws. Windows: 1 x4 5/8 x3 frame x 8 1 x2 x3 stops x 8 glass x 2 field measure 1 x3 x3 2 trim x 8 1 x3 x1 4 trim x 8 6.2.a Cut the window frames, connect the frame pieces with 2 ½ deck screws. Make sure that they are straight and firm. 6.2.b Install the window frames inside the rough openings on the walls. Nail them with 10d galvanized nails. Use shims to make sure that the frame is plumb. 6.2.c Install the inner stops with 6d galvanized finished nails. 6.2.d Install the glass, cut in needed dimensions. 6.2.e Apply the glazing tape to the stops and to both sides of the glass. 6.2.f Install the outer stops. 7. ROOF FRAMING 2 X6 X5 rafters x 8 2 x4 x5 collar tie x 2 1 x8 x6 2 ridge board x 1 2 x2 x1 10 gable studs x 4 2 x2 x6 gable studs x 8 2 x4 x6 2 rafter support x 4 Gable roof 7.a Place the rafter support on top of the top plates, following the construction outline. 7.b Cut the wood boards according to the rafter template scheme. 7.c Place the outer rafters and fasten them together with the ridge board. 7.d Add the remaining inner rafters (O.C. 2 ). 7.e Cut two collar ties 2 x4 and position them according to the drawing, on the two inner rafters. Facenail them to the rafters with 10d common nails. 8. ROOFING 4 2 x6 2 x1/2 roof sheathing x 2 asphalt shingles 55sq.ft 6 3 linear feet starter shingles x 2 building paper 55sq.ft 6 3 linear feet metal drip edge x 2 6 3 linear feet ridge cap shingles roofing cement 1 tube 8.a Nail 1/2 plywood sheathing to both sides of the roof frame. Nail the plywood sheathing to the rafters with 8d common nails, 10 apart. 8.b Nail the fascia on the rafters with 8d common nails, 12 apart. 8.c Nail aluminium dripedge to the edge of the roof, along the eaves. 8.d Cover the plywood roof deck with builders paper, placing the 1st sheet along the eave. Make sure that the 2nd piece of builder s paper overlaps with the 1st piece by at least 3. Smooth out any wrinkles and trapped air. Fasten it with 2d galvanized nails. 8.e Place the starter shingles along the eave (1/2 past the aluminium flashing). Fasten the starter shingles with 4d galvanized roofing nails. Place the starter shingles 3/8 apart. 8.f Place the 1st line of asphalt shingles on top of the starter shingles, fastening them with 4d galvanized roofing nails. 8.g Place a wide strip of granulated water and ice barrier (polypropylene ridge vent). Press it down and nail it with 4d roofing galvanized nails, 12 apart. Cover it with 6 wide ridge tiles, each fastened with 2 nails. 9. STAIRS 2 x1 x2 stringer x 3 1 x2 x3 10 tread x 2 5 x2 x3 10 riser x 2 5 x2 x3 10 bottom blocking x 1 9.a Cut out the stringers from 2 x1 x2 boards. 9.b Test if the treads and risers fit and make adjustments if needed. 9.c Cut all 3 stringer boards and position them on the even distances (two on the sides and one in the middle). 9.d Nail the top ends of the stringers to the shed with corrosion resistant framing connectors with 10d galvanized common nails. 9.e Attach the bottom ends of the stringers to the bottom blocking board with 10d galvanized nails. 9.f First add tread boards by nailing them to the stringers with 4d galvanized nails. 9.g Add the riser boards by nailing them with 4d galvanized nails.
