Getting Started Parts of the Shutter Remove the shutters from the packaging. All panels are marked. Do not mix the panels when there are multiple sets of shutters. Do not dispose of packaging until the shutter is operating to your satisfaction. HINGE PIN mounting strip/frame mounting strip/frame BUTTON CATCH Check the diagram to make sure you have all the parts needed for the appropriate type of installation. TOP RAIL TILT ROD Tools you may need to install your shutters: pencil, screwdriver, 1 4" nut driver, level, pliers, hammer or rubber mallet, tape measure and a 1 8" drill with assorted drill bits, non-marring hammer with 1" head, caulk or sealant, contact cement. STILES DIVIDER RAIL LOUVERS Wallboard Or Plaster: Use a secure fastener designed for hollow wall applications. NOTE: When installing screws with a drill, be careful not to over-tighten. This may cause the screw to break off in the wall or window frame. MOUNTING SCREW BOTTOM RAIL Metal: Pre-drill holes and use the included screws. SHUTTER PANELS Concrete, Stone, Brick Or Tile: Use a masonry drill and appropriate plugs, anchors or screws. Note: When selecting a fastener, make sure it is designed to support the weight of the product being installed. Follow the fastener manufacturer s instructions for proper installation of the fastener. self drilling anchor toggle bolt molly bolt screws (included) PLASTIC KEY STOP STRIP 3-Sided frame only 3-sided frame will be shipped with 3 mounting strips and 1 stop strip for the window sill. 4-sided frame will be shipped with 4 mounting strips. 3 Getting Started Parts of the Shutter 4

Metal Bracket Assembly Layout of Mounting Strips The trim frame will also include metal L brackets which are attached to the back side of the frame. With the frame face down, set a metal L Bracket on the back of the frame in each corner Metal bracket installed on back side of Trim Frame Metal bracket installed on back side of Trim Frame, Deluxe Trim Frame and Casing Frame LEFT TOP Lay out the mounting strips on a blanket on the floor according to the labels on the back of the mounting strips. Match the appropriate corners of the mounting strips. Using the supplied screws, (#6 x 5 8"), place 4 screws in each bracket to firmly secure the corners. BOTTOM RIGHT If minor gaps appear, use caulk or sealant to seal the corners once the shutter is completely installed. mounting strips/frame 5 Metal Bracket Assembly Layout of Mounting Strips 6

Assembling the Frame Assembling the Frame (con't) All Frames will be identified with removable labels. Match the line number of the frame with the line number of the panel. Do not remove the labels until the product is installed. Assemble the frame. Lay frame sides flat beside the panels to ensure that the frames will be assembled correctly and that the hinges on the panels and the frames will be in alignment. Frames are pre-drilled with installation holes. LEFT SIDE FRAME TOP FRAME CORNER KEY HINGE INSTALLATION HOLE RIGHT SIDE FRAME INSTALLATION HOLES MOUNTING STRIPS/FRAME TOP Slide the corner key that is in the top and bottom frames into the end of each side frame. Using a rubber mallet hammer, give a firm tap to the frame to ensure the corner keys are fully engaged. Assemble the frame by gently tapping the plastic key with a rubber mallet into pre-routed holes on the back of each frame. Installation holes are located just below each hinge on the side frames (except bottom hole is located just above the bottom hinge). Top and bottom frames should have evenly spaced holes no more than 16" apart. BOTTOM FRAME PLASTIC KEY RIGHT Insert the plastic corner keys into both ends of the top and bottom frames. NOTE: Bonding is only required for an outside mount L-frame application. 7 Assembling the Frame Assembling the Frame 8

Installing the Shutters Make sure the frame has been properly assembled and is right side up. The top of the frame is indicated by a greater amount of distance from the top of the top hinge to the edge of the frame. Installing the Shutters (con't) When the panels are level within the frame, hold the frame in position and place a screw in the middle bottom frame hole. Make sure the bottom frame is level before setting screws. Fasten the frame. Insert a screw in both the left and right top side frame holes. Secure the left screw first. Make sure the frame is level and then secure the screw on the right. Now you can hang the panels. Set the panel(s) in the frame and insert the hinge pins of the top and bottom hinges only. Bottom Rail Bottom Frame Stile Bottom Rail Rotate clockwise to retract screw and counterclockwise to extend screw. NOTE: In most cases the window frames are not plumb. Hinge shims will likely be needed to properly align hinges and allow proper panel operation. If minor support or leveling is required, turn the adjustable jamb cap at the bottom of the vertical jamb stile to the required spot. Fasten the remaining screws. Insert the screws into the remaining holes. Check to ensure that the panels are level after each screw has been screwed into position. Next you will square or level the panels to the opening. Move the bottom frame left or right until the panels are level. If this does not work, move the left frame up or down until the panels are level. Continue this with the right frame until you get the panels level. Squareness Adjustments The Panel Lock system does not require any installation when 4-sided frames are used. The Panel Lock caps have already been installed in the ends of the stiles. The plungers lock into the groove of the frame. If you received magnets, see Magnet & Catch Placement section for Installation details. 9 Installing the Shutters Installing the Shutters 10

Installing the Shutters (con't) Leveling/Squaring the Panels Inside Mount L-, Z- or Trim Frames Place frame in opening. Make sure the frame has been properly assembled and is right side up. Labels will identify each frame piece. Center the frame in the opening. Insert screws (#8 x 1 1 2") into the pre-drilled holes of the top of each side frame. Set the screws into the window jambs. Place frame in opening. The top of the frame is indicated by a greater amount of distance from the top of the top hinge to the edge of the frame. The label will indicate left and right sides, but labels do not indicate top and bottom frames, as they are usually interchangeable. Fasten the frame. Most frames have pre-drilled holes placed for ease of installation. Insert a screws (#8 x 1 1 2") in both the left and right top side frame holes. Center the frame in the opening, then set the screw into the window jambs. LEFT SIDE FRAME TOP FRAME BOTTOM FRAME Illustration applies to all frame styles CORNER KEY HINGE INSTALLATION HOLE RIGHT SIDE FRAME INSTALLATION HOLES Squareness Adjustments NOTE: Setting a bottom screw may not be possible due to marble window sills, etc. If this is the case, set screws in the lower side frame holes. Bottom Rail Stile Bottom Rail Move bottom frame left or right until the panels are level. If this does not work then remove the top left screw and move the left frame side up or down until the panels are level. Once level, set the screw back into the window opening. If this does not work then try repeating for the right side frame. (Also could remove the top right installation screw. Loosen or tighten the top left side screw until the panels are level then re-install the top right screw). When the panels are level and square within the frame, hold the bottom frame in position and set a screw in the middle bottom frame hole. NOTE: Setting a bottom screw may not be possible due to marble window sills, etc. If this is the case, set screws in the lower side frame holes. Inside Mount L-Frames Only NOTE: If the frame is significantly smaller than the opening size, then do not overtighten the screws. Overtightening the screws will cause the frame to distort. Now you can hang the panels. Set the panel(s) in the frame and insert the hinge pins of the top and bottom hinges only. Bottom Frame Rotate clockwise to retract screw and counterclockwise to extend screw. NOTE: In most cases the window frames are not plumb. Hinge shims will likely be needed to properly align hinges and allow proper panel operation. When magnets are supplied, minor support or leveling can be achieved by turning the adjustable jamb cap at the bottom of the vertical jamb (stile) to the required spot. Fasten the remaining screws. Insert screws in the remaining holes and check to ensure panels are level after every screw has been set into position. 11 Installing the Shutters Leveling & Squaring the Panels 12

Panel Lock Installation Panel Lock Installation The Panel Lock system does not require any installation when 4-sided frames are used. The Panel Lock caps have already been installed in the ends of the stiles. The plungers lock into the groove of the frame. If you received magnets with the L-Frame, see Magnet & Catch Placement section for Installation details. Place the Ramp back on the frame and set the screws. Repeat as necessary. Test the panels to ensure proper function and closure. The Panel Lock Plunger can be adjusted by using a flat head screwdriver. Push in on the plunger and rotate clockwise to thread the plunger into the panel or rotate the plunger counterclockwise to extend the plunger. Cap Screw Holes Once the shutters and panels have been installed, make a mark on the frame with a pencil to show where the center of the Panel Lock Plunger is located. Open the panel(s). Place the Panel Lock Ramp on the sill or window frame. The front edge of the ramp should be set back 1/8" from the front of the panel. Center the ramp on the line marking the plunger location. Mark the center of each screw hole of each Ramp. Close the gaps around the L-Frames with L-Frame Cover Strip (optional). This is glued to the front face of the frame. Caulk or sealant can be used to seal any gaps around the frames or mitered corners also. For Z- and Trim frames, Dap or Caulking can be used to seal any gaps around the frames or mitered corners. 13 Panel Lock Installation Panel Lock Installation / Cap Screw Holes 14

Magnet Catch Placement Install catch plate first as shown on drawings with the holes towards the center of the panel. (top illustration) Each catch plate should be 3 8" away from the edge of the stile and 3 8" away from the end of the panel. With panels in the closed position, mark with a pencil on the sill or frame where the stile meets the cross rail. Install the magnet from the mark toward the inside of the panel. Install two magnet catches per panel. NOTE: All magnetic catches must be installed. Mount magnets on frames. When there is no frame, mount magnets on window sill or jamb. Receiver plate mounts on bottom and top cross rails. SIDE VIEW OF MAGNET CATCH POSITION 3/8 PLATE IS 3/8 from 3/8" FROM of panel END OF PANEL PLATE IS FLUSH WITH with PANEL panel FRAME Frame Magnet MAGNET on ON Frame FRAME Plate PLATE TOP Top RAIL Rail STILE Stile Bottom BOTTOM Rail RAIL Plate PLATE MAGNET ON SILL Magnet on Sill Operation Move the tilt rod to open and close the louvers. For the best light control, the louvers are designed to close in the up position. Open the panels by grasping the stile on the panel frame. Never open the panels by pulling on the tilt rod or louvers. Care and Cleaning Minimum care and cleaning is needed to maintain the beauty of your Shutters. To Dust: use a soft clean cloth or vacuum with brush attachment. To Clean: use soft cloth with mild soap and water for normal care. Use a white gum eraser for stubborn marks. DO NOT USE ammoniabased cleaners, bleach, harsh chemicals or abrasives. Safety Because there are no dangling cords, Poly Shutters are a safe window covering product with children or pets. Another safety feature of Poly Shutters is the GREENGUARD certification for children and schools. Children are more heavily exposed to toxins than adults, so with Poly Shutters installed in your home, you won't have to worry about what they may be exposed to. 15 Magnet Catch Placement Operation / Care & Contact /Safety 16
