GOAL Episode 9 Broadcasting date : 3 February, 2003 RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE COMMENTARY Manni s fight with Lucia has made him front page news, and Mrs Carter suggests an interview at the BBC to keep the press happy. COMMENTARY (CONT D): COMMENTARY (CONT D): Doug comes for his money and threatens Paul. OK, OK, how much do you want? Meanwhile at the BBC, Manni s interview is going well and Emma meets top fashion designer Xavier Soyeux. He admires Manni s shirt and agrees to come to a fashion show at the Millhouse. When s the big day? It s tomorrow. What? COMMENTARY Will Manni get the shirts clean on time? CHARLIE CHARLIE Testing. One, two Emma! The lights are all done. Wait, I'll show you. Charlie, We haven't got time. Are they pointed at the stage? Of course they are! Then they'll be fine. Right, let's just check everything's been done, OK? 1

(O.S.) Okay Cat-walk? Ready. Lights? Definitely working. PA system?...welcome ladies and gentlemen. My name is Jim and I'll be your host this afternoon. He's not going to do it like that, is he..? I hope not! (CONT'D) Great. Now all we need is for the models to get here on time so that we can get them dressed up. LISA The shirts...i haven't ironed the shirts! Well, you'd better go and do that now then! But my best designs are at Manni's flat. And he said he'll be here. Don't worry. That's easy for you to say. I think I'll just try him on his mobile again. Testing, testing. One two, one two. There's that letter you wanted Mr Carter. Thanks, Lisa. (CONT'D) It's crazy. I feel great when I give all the players the day off, and then I feel terrible when I have to work myself. 2

(CONT'D) There you are LISA Thanks. Now listen. I'd like you to get hold of a very important phone number for me... Where have you been? Hello to you too! You were supposed to be here ages ago. I thought you were going to help us. Yeah, sorry, I, I had some things to do at home. Where's Manni? Why isn't he with you? I thought he was here. Well, he isn't. This is crazy! If he isn't with you then where is he?! He knows I need those shirts. Have you tried him on his cell phone? & Yes! Then I don't know, maybe he's at home. You just said you were at home a few minutes ago. Look, don't panic. I'm sure he'll be here soon. Manni wouldn't break a promise. If Manni said he'll be here, then he'll be here. Kenny! Kenny! I can't believe Manni s doing this to me! Don't worry about him. 3

CHARLIE Look, if Manni doesn't get here, there won't be any show! Yeah, OK. I understand! Just relax, will you! You get everybody ready and I'll try and find out where Manni is. OK? I guess all these people are friends of yours, are they? Okay, would everyone like to follow me please... What's going on? What do you mean? Don't lie to me. I know you know where Manni is. (CONT'D) This is, this is one the most important days of Emma's life. She really doesn't need two of her best friends causing problems for her. (CONT'D) Look, if something's wrong, then tell me! If Emma knows what it is, then at least she can do something about it. (CONT'D) Is Manni okay? Yeah, Manni's fine. That's not the problem. What is it then? It must be something terrible if you're too scared to tell Emma! Okay, okay, I'll tell you. But you've got to promise not to tell her. HOTEL RECEPTIONIST (OVER THE PHONE) London Skyline Hotel, how may I help you? Yes, yes, Hello? Can you put me through to room one-two-seven please?... (CONT D) Yes, I'll hold. DOUG Paul, how nice to see you. 4

Hello. Yes, hello. My name is Alex Carter. I'm the manager of London Rangers... Joe, can you grab the yellow shirt for me? Okay. I think everything's ready now. Yeah, everything except my best designs. I'll look stupid if they don't come. What are you talking about? The things you've got here already are sure to impress Xavier. It just feels like I've waited so long for an chance like this. And now it's here in front of me, I can't get it right! Oh, don't say that. You've come this far haven't you? You've been doing really well. (CONT'D) Anyway, Manni will be here in a minute. What? How do you know? I mean I guess he'll be here in a minute. No, you just said he will be here. (CONT'D) Sophie - I haven't got much time left. If you know something, then just tell me! Please! DOUG DOUG DOUG Do we have a deal? Yeah, I guess we do...i mean, what choice have I got? None at all. Look I don't have the money with me at the moment, though. That's OK. I can wait... Why didn't you tell me earlier? If I'd have known, I wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to organise this stupid show! 5

But Manni's with the kit man right now. He said he can get them clean! Yeah, but it's not like getting mud out of a football shirt Joe! We're talking about getting paint out of really delicate material. (CONT'D) What am I going to do? Xavier will be here really soon! KENNY There you are, good as new. Thanks Kenny. I should just get there in time! Hold the lift! Hold the lift! Hold it! Well, you certainly know how to make an entrance. He's here. Who? Manni? No. Xavier. I can't believe this! What am I going to do?! Just keep him happy for a while. I'm sure Manni'll be here soon. You don't know Xavier, he's not going to waste his time on rubbish. He needs to see my best stuff. Just relax and charm him. Right. Here goes... No. Not now! Just take it easy, Manni. There's no need to panic. 6

You don't understand. I've got to go to a fashion show. They're waiting for me. Yes, all right, but just calm down, yeah? There ll be someone here in a minute. Help please! Help! All welcome ladies and gentlemen to this afternoon's showcase of original designed clothing, hand-made by Emma Mills and modelled by the London Rangers football squad. It's not working! (CONT'D) I feel terrible! I promised Emma I would be there! She'll get another chance. It's not your fault you got stuck in a lift! Why didn't I tell her about the shirts before! I don't know!! Is life always like this? Like what? So full of ups and downs? What? You mean, so full of things like thinking your national coach is coming to watch you play and then finding out that he's flying back home instead? Yes, something like that. So. Is being stuck in a lift with your manager an up or a down? At the moment it s definitely a down - sorry, boss. (CONT'D) And next we have Buzz and Daisy. Buzz and Daisy have been going out for three weeks which is Buzz's longest relationship to date. 7

(CONT'D) Apart from going out with footballers, Daisy's other interests include inventing chants to sing at London Rangers matches... (TO XAVIER) Excuse me for just a moment. (CONT'D) What do you think you're doing? I thought it would be fun to give a bit of background information. Well stop it. This is a fashion show not TV game show! (CONT'D) (TO XAVIER) Sorry about that. Would you like a drink? XAVIER XAVIER That's Paul Carter. Yes it is. Why? Do you know him? Yeah. I am a big fan of his. Oh, excuse me just a second. (TO ) What is it? Have you heard from Manni? No. It's worse than that. We're running out of clothes. What do you want us to do? We could start using them again. We could get everyone to change their clothes. I don't know - what do you think? It's up to you. It's your decision. (CONT'D) But I do think it would be a shame to give up now... Wait a minute, I think I've got an idea. Just do me a favour and get rid of that idiot, will you? (CONT'D) Paul. Glad you could make it. Yeah, well, I like a good cabaret show. 8

Paul, I've got a favour to ask... Do you know Manni, I took a big risk bringing you over to this country. What do you mean? I mean, I wasn't sure how well you'd do here. I don't understand. Well, let me put it this way - If we don't win the championship this year, well... Back home in my country, I used to watch English football on TV and dream about coming over here. My friends thought I was mad. But I still believed in the dream. And now, here I am... Stuck in a lift. I think we're a great team. (CONT'D) Wait. Ahaa, one touch, right? Okay. Right, keep it simple, just walk to the end, do the turn and walk back again. Are you both ready? Yeah. OK, start the music. (CONT'D) Paul? 9

I'll do it on one condition - promise me you'll go out with me again. What! You are joking aren't you? This isn't really the time for jokes, is it? I can't believe you're doing this to me! I'm just trying to help. What do you care? You've never liked my work anyway. Well, you never came to every game I played, did you? What's that got to do with it? I'm just saying, we both could've helped each other a bit more, been a bit more supportive. Is that what you're being now? Helpful? Supportive? Emma, I know how much this means to you. If you really want it, just tell me and I'll help you out. Tell you? I'll tell you this: I hate you for doing this to me! It's not fair! Yes! Carter scores his fourth-hat-trick. Come on, we still might get there in time! (TO LISA) See you at the show! Don't you understand? I'm going out with Manni now! Yeah, I noticed he didn't even get here for your big day. He's got delayed. He's on his way. He's probably at home frightened after his interview. 10

What do you mean? It went okay. Yeah, until he heard that his national coach is going to Germany instead of coming to watch him. What? Didn't you see the interview? It was really funny. You should have seen Manni's face. I thought he was going to cry! Hello, Charlie! It's Manni, can you tell Emma I'm on my way please! I'll give you a lift. Jump in. Yes, ok, thank you. CHARLIE So? What are you going to do? Uh, Xavier's not looking happy. Come on Emma, you know we're good together. The answer's no Paul. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't want you wearing my clothes even if you were the last person on earth. Manni just phoned! He's on his way. CHARLIE (CONT'D) Oh and another thing. Get that idiot off the stage before he makes someone angry. I'm so sorry Emma! Manni don't worry about it. Where have you been? It's a long story. I'd better get these ironed! 11

No. It's too late for that! Am I too late? No, we still have time! (CONT D) Why didn't you tell me about Jorge going home? You had enough problems already. Oh, you still should have told me! You must be really disappointed! I don't want to think about it at the moment. Emma, today is your day. You'd better go and get dressed then. Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, we'd like to bring you to the final part of the show which brings you the very latest in the Emma Mills collection. And next we have, Manni! It seems to be going well. Aren't you going to go up there and show them how to do it, son. And look as stupid as everyone else? No chance! That's probably a good decision. I don't want you making that ankle worse. Ladies and Gentlemen, put your hands together for Manni! Manni looks great. Still, I hope he doesn t overdo it. He s going to be looked at very closely tomorrow. What do you mean? Jorge Rodriguez is coming down to the training session. 12

What? I thought he was going home? He was. But I managed to persuade him that unless he wants to go to the World Cup without his country's best striker, then he'd better come and have a look at Manni before he goes. XAVIER XAVIER (CONT'D) (TO ) Xavier, Xavier, please don't go yet! I wonder what she's saying. Please, I did not want to make you angry by leaving early I just wanted to ask you what you thought... Please, Emma, it was a fun show. I'll be in touch. What did he say about your shirts Emma? Nothing, I think he hated them. Okay, well done everybody. How's the ankle doing? Yeah, it s good so far. Right. Let's play some football. First team against the reserves. Reserves in bibs. (CONT'D) Some of you in the bibs don't look very happy. What's the matter, don't you like the colour? (CONT'D) You're not at a fashion show now ladies. Any more tackles like that son and you can go home until you calm down. 13

It's getting too spread out, right. The backs are holding back too far, if you are going to go up, commit, stay together Look at Manni, he thinks he's really great. What do you mean? Well, he turned up late for Emma's show yesterday, still thought he was the best thing in it. Yeah? Yeah, and not only that. He's also just been telling everybody that you were terrible. That you nearly ruined it for everyone! You what? Why's he saying things like that? Well, I don't know. But he thinks that if he hadn't turned up just in time, you would've ruined the whole evening with all your jokes and your talking! He said what?! Manni! Have you listened to a word I've said? Yes boss. Of course I have. So, do you still believe in the dream Manni? CHARLIE CHARLIE CHARLIE I just wondered if you wanted me to help you clean everything up? Oh, I'm too tired. I know what you mean. I hope you're not planning anything like that again. No, that was definitely the first and the last one ever! What do you mean? 14

CHARLIE Put it this way. Any dreams I had of becoming a fashion designer are now definitely over! Well, I liked it! (TO ) (TO ) What are you doing? Can't you see he's making you look like an idiot? Come on! Manni I'm sorry mate. I didn't mean it! He's been knocked out. We'd better get him to hospital. Is he going to be all right? I don't know, he's unconscious... Get an ambulance. 15
