ii ABSTRACT Andrea Reinkemeyer, Advisor Torn Edges, a Work or Five-String Electronic Violin and Tae, as ritten in artial ulillment o the requirements or the degree o Master o Music in Comosition at Boling Green State University. This thesis comosition is a ten-minute ork that combines the sonic ossibilities o re-recorded sound objects and the timbre o a live electronic violin. Torn Edges is meant to sonically reresent the tearing aart o many dierent elements such as metal, aer and time and the resulting rayed edges that occur hen such elements are destroyed. This action can be heard in both the violin and tae art throughout the course o this ork. In the violin art, the score calls or the erormer to lay many long glissandos and sustained notes. When combined ith a guitar eects edal, the resulting sound mimics the sound o notes being torn in hal. In addition, the use o distortion via a guitar eects edal creates a coherent sonic landscae ith the tae. The tae art consists o recorded samles o metallic objects, violins, cellos and comuter generated noises that are then maniulated using techniques such as convolution and granular synthesis. The linear motion o this ork hels to give Torn Edges its orm. In the irst section, both the violin and tae create a long crescendo that eruts into many tiny ieces o alling metal. Gradually extending the texture o the iece and creating a sense o tension until the abovementioned climax creates this crescendo. From this oint in the iece, the violin takes o into a ast and urious solo that eventually slos don and re-introduces the material heard in the beginning o the iece. In the closing section o this ork, both violin and tae create a sense o hesitation and conusion by the miss matching and miss timing o bits and ieces o material heard in the oening section o this ork. Torn Edges, as realized using Finale, Logic Pro 7, DSP Quattro, SoundHack, Kontackt and various GRM and Waves lug-ins at the Electro-acoustic studios at Boling Green State University and the comoser s ersonal home studio.
