Building a Personal Portfolio in Blackboard Creating a New Personal Portfolio UK SLIS 1. Enter the Blackboard Course, and select Portfolios Homepage in the Course Menu. 2. In the Portfolios page, you will see links for My Portfolios, My Artifact and Shared with Me. If this is your first time building your portfolio, there will be no documents associated with these links. 3. Under My Portfolios, select the Create Portfolio button. 4. Now you ll be on a page called Create Portfolio. And has the header General Information. On this page, type School of Library and Information Science as your portfolio title. 5. Next (still on that page), hit the Select Portfolio Template button to select your Portfolio template. There should be an existing template called SLIS-Advising Portfolio Template you will be using. Click the button on the left of it to select it and then hit submit to add the change: 6. After you hit submit, you will be prompted to take a tour of the Portfolio feature in Blackboard you may do this is you like, or you can skip to build your portfolio. 7. Now you should be on a page that says Create Portfolio: School of Library and Information Science. This is where you will begin building:

8. Start by clicking the pencil icon next to Click here to add a header to your portfolio. Create a header for your portfolio like thus: Firstname Lastname, Semester Year (ex: Jane Smith, Spring 2015). 9. Now you can begin building the portfolio components! You can add artifacts during the building process, or you can add them separately in the My Artifacts area (we ll go through that process later in this guide in the Adding Artifacts to Blackboard section). Remember, you can save at any time by clicking on the Done Editing button in the upper right hand corner. This will save your changes and take you back the My Portfolios screen. 10. Let s begin building the Portfolio! We will begin by adding an artifact to the Core Course Works section that appears fourth on the build page. Click on the pencil icon and link under that section that says Add Artifact : 11. You will get a window called Add Artifact to Portfolio Page. If you have previously added artifacts in My Artifacts, you will see them listed in the window. But let s assume you haven t added anything yet. Click on the button that says Add Personal Artifact to go to the next step.

12. Now you should see a screen that looks like this: Let s enter an example artifact, a final exam for LIS 600 Information in Society. For Title, put the course prefix and number first and then the assignment title. So we would enter LIS 600 Final Exam as the title. Putting the course prefix (LIS) and number will make searching through artifacts simple and easy. Description: This optional space is for a succinct summary of your artifact, and it does not show in your final portfolio. You should actually be doing this outside of Blackboard for your List of Artifacts document, so once you ve done that there, just copy/paste it here if it helps you. But really, you don t have to add that info in unless you want. Things to include in the description for your List of Artifacts: name of assignment, the date you submitted it, a brief description of what was completed, any instructor comments and your final grade. Take a look at the Learning Outcomes also, and think about which outcomes were accomplished through the assignment, and list the numbers of those outcomes for reference. Having these ready beforehand will make writing the Learning Outcomes essay much simpler and straightforward. Here is the sample description for our LIS 600 exam: Content:* This is where you should attach the file for your artifact. Click Browse My Computer next to the Attach File area to select a file from your computer or hard-drive to attach. Once you are finished, hit the Submit button at the bottom right of the window. *Be sure you have the final submitted document that was graded. If the assignment is not a regular document, but is web-based (such a website, for example), include a link in the Content rich text editor area instead.

The window will close and you should see a link to the new artifact in the Core Course Works section: Don t forget to click Done Editing to save all your changes! Tada! You created and attached your first artifact! Follow this same process for all of the artifacts for the remaining sections as well. Adding Artifacts to Blackboard in My Artifacts Would you rather add your artifacts first in one place, and then build your portfolio from them later on? You can! Here is a second option that some students may find easier than doing it all at once while building the portfolio. 1. Return to the Portfolios Homepage. If you hit Done Editing, you will go there automatically. 2. Click on My Artifacts on the left hand side to open the screen. You will see a list of any artifacts you have created for any portfolio (this screenshot shows the LIS 600 Exam from the example in step #12 from before): 3. Click the Add Personal Artifact Button and follow the same steps from #12 before. Do this for all of your artifacts. 4. Now that you have built up all your artifacts, you will follow the steps in the Linking Artifacts to Your Portfolio next to link the artifacts to the right sections in your portfolio.

Linking Artifacts to Your Portfolio 1. Go to the Portfolio Homepage and click on My Portfolios. 2. Find your Portfolio, and click Edit to open the Edit Portfolio screen: 3. Go to correct section for the artifact you are linking. In the case of our example, it s Core Course Works. 4. Click Add Artifact: to open the Add Artifact to Portfolio Page window. 5. Find the artifact(s) you want to attach the section and select each of them by checking their checkbox on the left-hand side. Blackboard will show the selected artifacts as highlighted. Once you have them all selected, click the Submit button at the bottom right of the window. 6. The window will close automatically and you will see your artifacts now linked: 7. Click Done Editing to save your changes and return to My Portfolios.
