Distinguished Speakers Dr. Michael Stanaitis, Professorial Lecturer at the School of International Service, American University Michael Stanaitis is a Professorial Lecturer at the School of International Service at American University, where his research focuses on international political economy, particularly the Great Recession and its implications for theories of trade openness. Prior to joining the SIS faculty full-time, Michael was a Ph.D. candidate and adjunct instructor at SIS. Before that, Michael taught international affairs at Emerson Preparatory School, where he served as the Social Studies Department Chair and faculty advisor to Emerson s Model United Nations team. His teaching specialties include international relations, comparative politics, economics, international human rights, and research methods. He currently teaches quantitative methods and international relations theory for the online master s degree program at SIS. Michael received his B.A. from Miami University of Ohio, where he studied international relations and philosophy. He received his M.A. from the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky, where he specialized in international development and wrote a thesis on the political economy of development NGOs. He lives in Hyattsville, MD with his wife Nikki and their two daughters Riley and Zoe. H.E. Jose Manuel G. Romualdez, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America Jose Manuel Babe del Gallego Romualdez was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America in July 2017 by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Additionally, as the head of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Romualdez is concurrently the Philippines emissary to the Commonwealth of Jamaica, Republic of Haiti; Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; Antigua and Barbuda; Bahamas; Barbados; Dominica; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; and Saint Lucia. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Romualdez was designated as a special envoy of the Philippine President to the United States. He also served as a member of several Philippine business delegations visiting the United States, China, Japan and New Zealand from 1989 to 2012. Ambassador Romualdez has extensive experience as a media practitioner and business executive. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Stargate Media Corporation and Publisher of People Asia Magazine (The Philippine Star affiliate). He was president of the Manila Overseas Press Club and vice-president of Rotary Club of Manila. Ambassador Romualdez writes columns for The Philippine Star. All his columns have a wide following of readers both in the Philippines and abroad. Born and raised in Manila, Ambassador Romualdez received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from De La Salle College in 1970. An avid golfer, he is affiliated with Manila Golf and Country Club and the Manila Polo Club. Hon. Richard J. Schmierer, Chairman of the Board of Directors & President, Middle East Policy Council Ambassador Schmierer served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman from 2009 through 2012. He completed his Foreign Service career in 2014 as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA). In 2013, Schmierer served as NEA Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary. Previously he was the NEA Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq, and Director of the Office of Iraq Affairs. Schmierer was at Georgetown University from 2005 through 2007, where he published the book Iraq: Policy and Perceptions. He had prior diplomatic postings in Iraq, Germany and Saudi Arabia. Schmierer holds a B.A. degree from Lehigh University and MA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Barry Blechman, Co-Founder and Distinguished Fellow, The Stimson Center Barry M. Blechman is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Center -- a nonpartisan, nonprofit think-tank in Washington, D.C. He co-founded Stimson and was chairman of its Board from 1989 to 2007. Dr. Blechman also founded DFI International Inc., a research consultancy, in 1984, and served as its CEO until 2007. Dr. Blechman has nearly fifty years of distinguished service in national security, in both the public and private sectors. He is an expert on political and military policies, military strategy, and defense budgets and industries. Dr. Blechman has worked in the Departments of State and Defense, and at the Office of Management and Budget. At various times during his career, he has been associated with the Brookings Institution, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for Naval Analyses, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Among other boards and commissions, Dr. Blechman served on the Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States (1998-99), the Defense Policy Board (2002-06), and the Department of State Advisory Committee on Transformational Diplomacy (2005-08). Dr. Blechman holds a Ph.D in international relations from Georgetown University, has taught at several universities, and has written extensively on national security issues. 5
