SEPTEMBER 2016 BLACK & WHITE & OPEN PROJECTED = 46 PRINTS = 07 JUDGE COLIN TYLER

Page 2 SET A GRADE DIGITAL BURNING RUBBER HC This is a good black and white image with a full range of tones, with good action going on and the smoke helps hide he back ground COME DANCE WITH ME To me it feels too static and would have liked to have seen maybe a different angle to create a stronger image. The white edge bottom left is a bit distracting DORMENT LAKE Acceptance This is a busy image and find the white top and bottom very distracting and pulls my eyes away from the tree on the left which should be the focal point ENJOYMENT Nice emotions with the three kids, My eyes do run from the front to the back and back again, but then I focus on the young girl in the centre. The small white area far right is slightly distracting

SET A GRADE DIGITAL CONTINUED Page 3 FREEZING FOG I like the way you are drawn right into this image with the use of the road, trees and fence. I do fine that the thick white boarder is distracting and pulls my eyes away from the image INTERCITY TRAVELLERS I kept coming back to this image and wasn't sure about it as all four expressions and what they are doing each hold your interest. But each time I cam back to it I would look at a different person. It is a great family on Holiday (my family was not this peaceful!) The fact each on is in their own world adds so much to it as well MAGNIFICENT MAGNOLIA The use of Shallow Depth of field, but I feel the focus point is not quite right. I found the top of the stem is the focal point and this area is soft. MOODY MORNING The fog helps create some depth in this image. The use of the tree framing the church is almost right but find it over powers the church and is distracting if we could have seen more of the steple it could have held my eyes on the church

ACTION A GRADE CONTINUES Page 4 PONY STALLION I find this a really strong image, and powerful. It really holds my attention. The horse is in the center but I feel this works along with the thin dark base. Im sure it would look good up on the wall PYLONS I really like the composition with this image, the lines leading from right to left work well and the fact one pylon is darker and this makes it the focal point STRIPES I really like this image, the patterns, composition as well as the black and white treatment. The shallow DoF is great

ACTION A GRADE CONTINUED Page 5 THE OLD STONE BRIDGE Acceptance I like the angle of the bridge but would have liked to have seen a bit more of it, the white areas on the water are distracting and the area at the top is very busy THE BRAZILIAN Acceptance Shooting still life gives you lots of time to play with lighting and composition. I feel getting closer and softer light would have helped this. On my laptop I can see grey areas on the right hand side, so playing with the lighting you may have been able to remove this THE POWER OF A HUG HC A Lovely mum and baby image, the composition is great and so is the emotion. The bright area on the fingers is distracting, it is a shame that the baby is slight soft which lets it down as mum is sharp TIME FOR A REST Acceptance The angle of the chairs is good but the bushes make it a busy image, it may have been a stronger image if there was someone r something on the second seat to create a focal point

Page 6 SET A GRADE CONTINUED DIGITAL WASH DAY This is like looking in to the life of someone. The lighting is a bit strong, but I like the position of the fence and letter boxes just lets you look through to the washing. Having a person putting the washing out might have made it stronger? WINTER SHADOWS This image does have some depth to it with the darker tress in the background. And the shadows work well. It does seem to lack some punch or that something a bit different to hold my attention WINTER STROLL IN WARSAW The composition is good and I like the people all getting on with their lives in the cold climate. I do find the bright white sky is a shame as it is distracting and pulls me away from all the people

SET B GRADE DIGITAL Page 7 CALLA LILLIES I like the composition and how you have laid the flower out and the shallow DoF is good, but to me it look soft and I would have liked to have see more detail in the flowers. ETHEREAL This gives me the feeling that the trucks are bursting out of the ground. The bright area behind is strong and does pull my eyes away from the trucks. Don t mind the soft effect you have given it as it adds to the tree trucks FOR REFLECTION This is an image that I think would have been stronger in colour as the clouds would have colour in the sunset and the bright areas pull me away from the person in the image. The detail in the rock and pool ot water are good. LOOK LEFT AND RIGHT AT ZEBRA CROSSING Honour This has a great lead in line from the bottom centre and right up to the head where your eyes end up on the Zebras face. The shallow DoF work well and the black and white patterns help keep your eyes in the image

Page 8 SET B GRADE DIGITAL CONTINUED MORNING LIGHT OLD WOOLSHED Honour I like the lighting from the back and creating the long shadows in the foreground. And the track on the left draws your eyes right into the imae creating the depth MYSTERY COVE The long exposure helps create a moody feel, the position of the rocks create a angle from right to left which works really well. This image works in B&W REACH FOR THE SKY This is almost like a Infrared image, the white tress really stand out. I think the grain helps add to the feel of this. The angle of the hill works REEDS This is a simple image in the fact it is white with a bit if black. To me I think you have shwn too much and if it had been less with the reflections it could have ben bolder and stronger. Here I think it is too busy

SET B GRADE DIGITAL CONTINUED Page 9 SEE THE LIGHT The light from the sky is great falling onto the graves, makes a moody image. The right hand side if cropped out I feel would be better a I found the out of focus head stones distracting. SILO SHADOWS 2 I like the simple style with this, the light on the Silo and steps creates the shape of the silo, the cloud is distracting but I feel the silo is stronger enough to old your attention SWAN LAKE Nice detail on the Swan, I like the ripples around the bid. I would have liked to have seen the rest of the reflection as this might have been a good balance VIEW FROM THE TOP This has great lighting, the placement of the tree in the frame works really well. And the hills create the depth of the mage as your eyes look though to the far right.

Page 10 SET C GRADE DIGITAL ALONE AT DUSK This is a good silhouette image, I like the placement of the tree and great detail in the sky. The light area in the centre is distracting AN EYE FOR A COW PHOTO A close up of the cow. I am not sure if going close and cutting of the nose or moving a bit further back would have helped. The bright to right is distracting and could have been tones down BACK IN THE DAY PHOTO The wide angle and the central position works well,.the background the the bright hard light on the truck let this down. Maybe going closer and filling the frame with the truck would help LOW TIDE This does have a good leading line from the bottom getting you to look further into the image, but I feel it is missing the end focal point. So my eyes start to wonder around the image after fooling the shallow creek

SET C GRADE DIGITAL CONTINUES Page 11 ME AND MY SHADOW I like the idea and the shadow of the lamp that all works well. I find the vertical lines to strong and distracts me from the lamo and shadow. Great use of the side lighting OLD NEW NEW PHOTO The old and new can create good images. If these two vehicles were closer together with out the gap it would have been a stronger image PAT ME PLEASE PHOTO Normally taking a photo of your pet from above them is not the best way, but when you add the title to this it makes it a little different. For some reason I keep looking at the tail and that s could be due to it being brighter than the face.

Page 12 SET C GRADE DIGITAL CONTINUES PEACEFUL REFLECTIONS This is a busy image and I found my eys keep looking around it wanting to find a focal point. If there was one thing slightly different to ed up on this would have been a stronger image SHADOW PLAY Great to see a vertical landscape image. The light is great and the shadows really add soehing to it. Normally fences stop your eyes going further into an image but here they work really well, love this SUNSET PHOTO Sunsets are hard in black and white as the bright area is so white and holds your eye, and here it pulls you away from the fore ground. TWISTED This is a very busy image. I like the angle you have taken it as it leads our eyes up the tree, the light area at the bottom keeps pulling me away from the rest of the image

OPEN B GRADE Page 13 HARVARDS WITH MUSTANG This is well handled with the exposure and focus. But I feel you have taken it a split second too late or too soon. The plane on the left wing goes out of the frame and the plane behind I cant see enough. The yellow one is great and could be an image on its own IMAGE IN A DEW DROP Great reflection in the water. The colours all work well together. Having it in the center lets it cown and I would have cropped a lot of the top or both the top and bottom so there was less back ground NECTAR LUNCH High comm Well caught, and the composition works well. The topflower is bright so maybe tone this down so its not the brightest part of the image PRAYER WHEEL Great detail in this, I would have liked to haveseen a bit more or even see the person holding the instruments to add more to the story. But I like the shallow DoF and even though there are two the front one is dominate which works well THE EYE ON THE APPLE This is great image showing the old ways with the clothing and the modern technology. The position of them in the frame works well and tells a story

Page 14 SET A GRADE PRINTS BEACHED. The composition and the reflection work really well. I do find the white corners slightly distracting and pulls my eyes aay from the wreck. HERE SHE DIED I like the story here and leaves me wanting to know what happened. The background works well, Maybe a little bit more contrast in the image LAKE WANAKA This is a nice landscape and like the way my eyes flow through the image to the hills and then back to the tree which is the focal point. LAST SURF FOR THE DAY Honour This is a great simple shot. The lines of waves at a slight angle and then the surfer making the focal point all work well

SET A GRADE PRINTS CONTINUED Page 15 TE KITENGA (THE VIEW) I find the statue too central and with the bright area on the right pulls my eyes away. Maybe cropping most of the right off. The sky on the left works well with the Statue THE WARRIOR I like the way he is slightly off center. His open shirt and the camera tell you a story about him and his hobby. Maybe a shallower Depth of Field to blur the hedge out would help make him stand out more SET B GRADE PRINT SHEARER The curve from the bottom of the sheep around to the head helps bring you into the image. You can see his face but I don t mind that as there is enough to tell the story and the action that is happening.
