UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA Second Semester Examination 2009/2010 Academic Session April/May 2010 RAG 322 Environmental Science 2 [Sains Persekitaran 2] Duration: 3 hours [Masa: 3 jam] Please check that this examination paper consists of FIVE pages of printed material before you begin the examination. Sila pastikan bahawa kertas peperiksaan ini mengandungi LIMA muka surat yang tercetak sebelum anda memulakan peperiksaan ini. Students are allowed to answer all questions in English OR in Bahasa Malaysia. Pelajar dibenarkan menjawab semua soalan dalam Bahasa Inggeris ATAU Bahasa Malaysia. Answer FIVE questions only: Answer at least TWO questions from Section A and TWO questions from Section B and ONE more question can be selected from Any Section. Jawab LIMA soalan sahaja. - 2 - SECTION A: Answer at least TWO questions from this section. BAHAGIAN A: Jawab sekurang-kurangnya DUA soalan daripada bahagian ini. 1. (a) Compare the provison of space, light and ventilation in the Uniform Buildings ByLaws 1984 for a school building and hospital ward. In your opinion based on local climatic conditions, does this provision sufficient to provide thermal comfort to the occupants in both cases? Discuss. Bandingkan keperluan ruang, cahaya dan pengudaraan yang diperuntukkan dalam Undang-Undang Bangunan Seragam 1984 untuk sebuah sekolah dan wad hospital. Pada pendapat anda berasaskan keadaan iklim tempatan, adakah peruntukan ini mencukupi untuk memberi keselesaan termal pada penghuni kedua-dua kes ini? Bincangkan. Discuss Four (4) situations where mechanical ventilation becomes extremely necessary as natural ventilation may be unable to provide sufficient cool and clean air for health and indoor comfort requirement. Bincangkan Empat (4) keadaan di mana pengudaraan mekanikal menjadi amat perlu iaitu apabila pengudaraan semula jadi berkemungkinan tidak berupaya membekalkan udara sejuk dan bersih untuk keperluan kesihatan dan keselesaan dalam bangunan. 2. (a) State Two (2) main causes of building defects which are under the control of the designer and give examples with the aid of sketches. - 3 - State Three (3) main causes of water penetration and wetness in buildings and suggest the methods of overcoming. Nyatakan Tiga (3) punca utama kemasukan air dan keadaan basah pada bangunan dan cadangkan kaedah-kaedah untuk mengatasinya. 3. (a) With the aid of sketches describe the concept of Breathing Roof Construction as a cooling strategy in reducing overheating in tropical hot-humid countries. Dengan bantuan lakaran jelaskan konsep Binaan Bumbung Bernafas sebagai satu strategi penyejukan untuk mengurangkan keadaan panas di negara tropika panas-lembap. Horizontal, vertical landscaping and water are natural elements which can reduce hotness conditions in buildings. Give examples with the aid of sketches. Landskap mendatar, menegak dan air merupakan elemen semulajadi yang dapat mengurangkan keadaan panas pada bangunan. Berikan contoh-contoh dengan bantuan lakaranlakaran....4/-

(a) Computerized building simulation programs help the designer predict a buildings environmental performance with some accuracy before a building is constructed. (i) (ii) Give Three (3) reasons why such programs should be utilized early at the building s design stage. Give Two (2) examples of such programs and elaborate on their strengths and capabilities.
