PROFILE OF THE DISTRICT Koraput is a mosaic of tribal life and culture. The District of Koraput derives its name from its headquarters, the present town of Koraput. Koraput with her rolling mountains, undulating meadows, roaring rapid, enchanting waterfalls and terraced valleys, is a feast to the eye as few other Districts can. However, over the years the environment has been degraded to a great extent due to deforestation, soil erosion, loss of productivity of the soil etc. The entire District has been declared as a scheduled Area under the Presidential scheduled Areas Order, 1950. The District spreads over a geographical area of 8379 Sq. Kms. It is divided into 02 Revenue Sub-division(Koraput and Jeypore, 14 Tahasils and 14 community Development Blocks, 01 Municipality and 03 Notification Area Councils. There are 226 G.P.s,1985 Revenue villages in the district. Koraput District, formed into a district on 1 st April, 1936 out of Vizianagarm, District under Madras Presidency was further bifurcated into four districts viz. Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Malkangiri with effect from 2/10/1992 as per Notification No. 19137/R dated 01/10/1992 of Revenue and Excise Department, Government of Orissa, Bhubaneswar.

The new Koraput District lies in extreme southern part of Orissa and is located between 18 0 & 19 0 Northern latitude and 82 0 and 83 0 East longitude. It extends in the west up to Bastar District, in the East up to Rayagada and Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh) Districts, in the North up to Nabarangpur and Rayagada Districts and in the South up to Vizianagaram and Vizag Districts. The population of Koraput district as per 2011 census (provisional) is 13,76,934 ( Male-6,77,864 & Female 6,99,070). However the basic data of the district as per 2001 census (final) is as follows.

2. Physiography The District located on a section of the Eastern Ghats gives a wavy form of topography. The District has vast expanse of mountain ranges along with hill streams which ultimately pass to rivers namely Indravati, Kolab and Machkund. The District has an altitude up to 1000 M above MSL, Koraput, Semiliguda, Pottangi, Nandapur, Lamtaput, Dasmantapur and Laxmipur Blocks are having altitude over 900M above MSL. Narayanpatna and Bandhugam Blocks, have altitude ranging 300M to 600M above MSL Jeypore Subdivision has altitude up to 600M. The District falls into two agro climatic zones namely Eastern Ghat High Land comprising all the blocks of Koraput Sub-Division and Kotpad Block and South Eastern Ghat comprising the four blocks of Jeypore sub-division.

Koraput District : Census 2011 data An official Census 2011 detail of Koraput, a district of Orissa has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Orissa. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Koraput district of Odisha. In 2011, Koraput had population of 1,379,647 of which male and female were 678,809 and 700,838 respectively. In 2001 census, Koraput had a population of 1,180,637 of which males were 590,743 and remaining 589,894 were females. Koraput District population constituted 3.29 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Koraput District was at 3.21 percent of Maharashtra. Population. There was change of 16.86 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Koraput District recorded increase of 14.67 percent to its population compared to 1991.. Koraput Child Population 2011 In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0-6 age were also collected for all districts including Koraput. There were total 225,126 children under age of 0-6 against 200,689 of 2001 census. Of total 225,126 male and female were 113,742 and 111,384 respectively. Child Sex Ratio as per census 2011 was 979 compared to 983 of census 2001. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 16.32 percent of Koraput District compared to 17.00 percent of 2001. There was net change of -0.68 percent in this compared to previous census of India. Koraput Houseless Census In 2011, total 250 families live on footpath or without any roof cover in Koraput district of Orissa. Total Population of all who lived without roof at the time of Census 2011 numbers to 725. This approx 0.05% of total population of Koraput district. In total 226,169 people lives in urban areas of which males are 115,038 and females are 111,131. Sex Ratio in urban region of Koraput district is 966 as per 2011 census data. Similarly child sex ratio in Koraput district was 944 in 2011 census. Child population (0-6) in urban region was 26,089 of which males and females were 13,417 and 12,672. This child population figure of Koraput district is 11.66 % of total urban population. Average literacy rate in Koraput district as per census 2011 is 81.80 % of which males and females are 88.48 % and 74.90 % literates respectively. In actual number 163,665 people are literate in urban region of which males and

females are 89,917 and 73,748 respectively. As per 2011 census, 83.61 % population of Koraput districts lives in rural areas of villages. The total Koraput district population living in rural areas is 1,153,478 of which males and females are 563,771 and 589,707 respectively. In rural areas of Koraput district, sex ratio is 1046 females per 1000 males. If child sex ratio data of Koraput district is considered, figure is 984 girls per 1000 boys. Child population in the age 0-6 is 199,037 in rural areas of which males were 100,325 and females were 98,712. The child population comprises 17.80 % of total rural population of Koraput district. Literacy rate in rural areas of Koraput district is 42.37 % as per census data 2011. Gender wise, male and female literacy stood at 54.14 and 31.26 percent respectively. In total, 404,425 people were literate of which males and females were 250,926 and 153,499 respectively.
