Selecting the right float switch 2 There are different methods for selecting the right float switch for a particular application. This note suggests one such method. 1. Physical arrangement and choice of float switch style. The choice of styles that may be suitable for an application will depend on the physical arrangement of the tank, the available mounting positions and whether access is available to the inside of the tank. Consideration should also be given to whether there is the possibility of a build up of deposits, from the liquid, on the float body. These deposits can, over a period of time, accumulate to such an extent that the float switch can fail to operate. There are particular series designed to limit the effects of this build up. There are also choices, for some series, of mounting thread. 2. Material selection The selection of most suitable materials, for float switch and gasket, can be made by reference to the Chemical Compatibility chart (www.crydom.co.uk). This gives a good indication of the suitability, of the float switch materials, in a wide range of liquids. It may be necessary, for some liquids, to obtain a sample float switch to test the compatibility. 3. Electrical It is important to fully understand the nature of the load, to be switched by the float switch, and to make sure that the switch is capable of handling this load. The electrical ratings, shown in Crydom float switch specifications, are all for purely resistive loads. Any loads that have either inductive or capacitive components should have the appropriate contact protection measure applied, by reference to the Circuit Hazards and Contact Protection (www.crydom.co.uk) application note. 4. Cables Crydom has standard, UL approved, cable types for the various float switches, which are shown on the product data sheets. Other cables, or connectors, can be supplied subject to special quotation and order. 5. Options Crydom has, over the years, produced many variants of its float switches to match particular customer requirements. Please contact Technical Support for advise about any particular special requirement

13 SLP4 Submersible level probe Submersible probe Low space requirement Cable mounted N/O or N/C configurable No power requirement This is a single switch point liquid level probe, for use in water or acqueous liquids, designed to be suspended into the liquid by its cable. It can be configured to give make or break action on either rise or fall, by removing the protective shield and reversing the float orientation. The switching level may be adjusted by varying the cable length. The reedswitch contact is suitable for switching signal levels, up to 50 volts. The main uses for this probe are level switch for narrow boreholes, or applications with restricted space, and also as a signal switch for reservoir high or low level monitoring. These are manufactured with standard PVC cable lengths of 15 or 25 metres but can be manufactured with other lengths. Other switch types and configurations, cable gland and cable type are possible, please contact Crydom with your requirement. FFS Series The FFS series of cable end float switches are designed for controlling levels in large tanks, cisterns or reservoirs and can be directly installed on submersible pumps. The casing is manufactured in blow moulded Polyethylene (PEHD), with 5m PVC cable with protective earth conductor as standard. The switching element is a microswitch, with UL, VDE and CENELEC approvals, activated by a moving stainless steel ball and having an electrical life of 200,000 operations. Non hygroscopic closed cell expanded polyurethane is injected around the switch housing within the outer casing, hermetically sealing the unit. It is capable of working down to 100 metres depth in water. 14 Other models, including versions for use in fuel oils, are available. Please contact our sales office for details. FFSMC Multi-contact float switch Submerged type float switch for sewer and industrial waste systems. This self-weighted cable end float switch is designed for use in turbulent industrial fluids and fluids with suspended agglomerates, such as sewer water. The switch is water resistant up to a depth of 100m, and is insensitive to humidity and condensation, due to the particular design of the switch element. This makes it suitable for applications where there may be wide or rapid fluctuations in ambient or fluid temperatures. Switching capacity of this new design of self-cleaning switch element is 10A at 250V ac. The outer casing is manufactured in blow moulded Polyethylene (PEHD) and the switch element is surrounded by non-hygroscopic closed cell expanded polyurethane, hermetically sealing the unit. The switch is fitted with an internal weight such that it fixes the centre of gravity, and rotation, close to the cable entry. An external counterweight is supplied to adjust the pivot position. The moulding shape is rounded to prevent the accumulation of solids, that could cause the float to sink. LM10 series This is suitable for use in water, industrial wastewater and sewage, that can have wide variations of temperature. This small design of switch is for use in more confined spaces, where there is not enough room for the larger FFSMC type. The rounded body design and floating attitude prevents accumulation of solids on the body. The switch has additional internal ballast, to bring the centre of gravity and rotation close to the cable entry point. The switching element is a self cleaning type, that makes the complete switch insensitive to humidity and condensation, allowing this type to operate in widely fluctuating temperatures. The switch contacts are rated at 10 Amp resistive. Supplied, as standard, with 5 metres cable and adjustable counterweight. General Container wall thickness and ease of access must be determined in order to select the fitting type required. The tank wall should be flat, as concave or convex walls can cause ineffective sealing of the float switch into the tank wall. application notes 22 Hold the float switch firmly, ensuring that the orientation of the float is correct and that the sealing washer/gasket is not impaired, and tighten the fixing nut, until finger tight. Carefully tighten the fixing nut to the appropriate torque of 3.0lbs/fl. (4.0Nm) maximum. Check the seal and orientation, before connecting the float switch to the required electrical circuit. Please note that fixing nuts should not be overtightened, as this may damage the product. Maximum wall thickness should not be exceeded or leaking may occur.
