A Message from our President Dear PAI Members, September is dun and colorful October looms. By the really great turn out for the September George Tice presentation and all the positive emails I received, I know you all truly enjoyed that special event. Well, get ready for October 29 when our next speaker for PAI will be Craig Semetko. A classic street shooter in that great tradition, Craig Semetko uses Leica cameras to capture images that transcend the moment. He grew up near Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication. His images have been exhibited in numerous galleries in the United States and in Europe. His work has appeared in various international publications and can be found in private collections worldwide. His book, UNPOSED, published by teneues with a foreword by Magnum Photos photographer, Elliott Erwitt, was released in the fall of 2010. Come to the October 29th meeting. His 10 x10 project became his second book, INDIA UNPOSED. Elliott Erwitt wrote the foreword for Semetko s first book, UNPOSED, and called him the essential photographer. That is, the one who sees what others could not have seen. The current issue of Esquire magazine s Big Black Book calls Semetko a noble torchbearer to Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Sebastião Salgado, among others. Semetko has had solo exhibitions at the Leica Galleries in NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, Frankfurt, Salzburg and Solms, and has co-exhibited with Cartier-Bresson at the Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, Colorado. He recently returned from Europe where he taught Leica Akademie Master Class weekends in Milan, London, St. Moritz and Frankfurt, and was selected to be the first guest lecturer at the new Leica Camera headquarters in Wetzlar. His work has appeared in numerous publications and his prints hang in private collections in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Semetko is originally from Detroit, MI, graduated Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and currently resides in Los Angeles 2013 Craig Semetko River Ganges, Varanasi, India.

Margaret McCarthy Writes: My work included in MAILBOX: A Correspondence Exhibition of Mail Art, celebrating 80 years of Hambidge Center \Margaret McCarthy, Hambidge Waterfall from HOT WATER Series, Pigment print, 2014 Copyright, Margaret McCarthy Dear Friends, I'm pleased and honored to have a photographic piece included in MAILBOX: A Correspondence Exhibition of Mail Art, celebrating 80 years of Hambidge. To celebrate 80 years of nurturing the creative spirit, Hambidge Fellows were invited to be part of Mailbox by inventively altering a card and sending it back to the gallery. Inspired by the Fluxus movement, mail art is collaboration in small scale, sent through the post; it's about communication, exchange, community and fun. Curated by Didi Dunphy, the exhibition includes 101 artworks from visual artists, writers, composers and dancers from 18 different states. The exhibition is on through September 13, 2014 About www.hambidge.org For 80 years, the Hambidge Center has awarded residency fellowships to distinguished artists and scientists at our 600-acre creative sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
