DECEMBER 2014 NEWSLETTER Welcome to the December Newsletter. TPS PROJECT 365 After Ken Scott's inspirational talk a few weeks ago I thought it would be good if a bunch of TPS members had a go at a 365 Project for 2015 - that means taking a picture every single day of the year! For those of you who missed the talk, some of the key points were: Don't plan - be spontaneous Take a camera (of any sort, even a phone) everywhere you go. Try a different view - looking down, looking up, lying on the ground... This is not about ultimate picture quality, as for a competition. Its about learning to see the world differently, and hopefully improving your photography along the way. If you're working, and can't get home in daylight, then make use of your lunch break! Otherwise - there are always still life possibilities around the home. So far I have had expressions of interest from 3 other members: its a big commitment, but we do want to start out with the intention of completing the whole year. Doing it in collaboration with other members will help keep up the motivation, so if you are interested, please drop me a line (brian@leazes.com) or grab me one Thursday. The system we will use will be based on the Flickr website - so the first step for everyone will be to create a (free) account at http://www.flickr.com Then Add a New Album called something appropriate: One-a-Day, My365, 2015... A Flickr Group called TPS365 (http://www.flickr.com/groups/tps365/), has been set up, and you will need to visit that and request to join. From the start date of January 1st you will need to upload a single image only each day - I suggest restricting the size to around 800 pixels, and if you prefer, add a watermark to copyright your images. Change the title of the image to "DayXXX" so that the whole sequence will ultimately sort correctly. Also, we'll each be able to see what everyone else did on any specific day. It would be nice to add a short description to each image, but it won't be mandatory. Once uploaded, add it to your personal 365 Album - this will become your album for the whole year - or you may prefer to create one for each calendar month. Then click the Add to Group link to post it in the TPS365 Group. Obviously, it may not be convenient to upload images every single day - the important thing is taking them - but ideally upload 2 or 3 times a week, making sure you keep the Day numbering correct. If you aren't familiar with Flickr then I suggest you get practising straight away - I will open up the TPS365 Group so that we can get the hang of things, but I will remove all the images in it at the end of the year. If any other member is interested in purchasing a print case Alan has offered to make a group order which will reduce the cost per case. A particular highlight in this exhibition will be the works of Magnum photographer, Elliott Erwitt, who eloquently captures the whimsical and the humorous in everyday life and his works will form a significant part of the exhibition. Highlights include the romantic "Eiffel Tower, Paris, 1989" and "California Kiss, 1955" alongside more the more humorous pictures "Paris, 1989" and "Felix, Gladys and Rover, New York City, 1974", whereby Erwitt uses our canine companions as the focus of his, sometimes satirical, works. In an almost polar approach to photography is the geometric work of Niko Luoma, Systematic Collapse R to B, 2013. Luoma finds his inspiration in mathematics and geometry and his interest lies in repetition of forms and finding new ways to challenge the photographic process. Looking at his works you would not instantly categorise them as photographs, but they are photographs in their purest form an interchange between light sensitive materials and light. Other photographers in the exhibition include Bill Brandt, René Burri, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Frauke Eigen, Robert Frank, Andreas Gefeller, Ernst Haas, William Klein, Niko Luoma, Jimmy Nelson, Sebastião Salgado and Paolo Ventura. Over 160 important pictures spanning the breadth of photographic history, held across two London galleries. This year Beetles+Huxley have taken the unusual but enjoyable step of teaming up with the Osborne Samuel gallery on Bruton Street to help stage their annual group show. Osborne Samuel is an extremely prestigious gallery, best known for dominating the Modern British field with their exhibitions of Lynn Chadwick, Henry Moore and other internationally famous British artists. Beetles+Huxley are delighted that they have agreed to help host this exhibition, which is so large and expansive in its scope that it demands two galleries to do it justice. Osborne Samuel will be displaying the 19th and 20th century works and Beetles+Huxley will be displaying the contemporary photography in the exhibition. The winning photograph by Giordano Cipriani is a stunning portrait of an Asurini do Tocantins man in the Brazilian Amazon. The winning entries give an insight into the incredible diversity and unique ways of life of tribal and indigenous peoples around the world. The photographs feature, among others, the long-distance running Tarahumara in Mexico, the bull-jumping Hamer in Ethiopia, and the mountain-dwelling Igorot in the Philippines. One of the runners-up: a Hamer man in Ethiopia's Omo Valley skilfully jumping over a row of bulls as part of a wedding ceremony. The twelve winning photographs will feature in Survival s annual calendar. Open to amateurs and professionals alike, the competition called for entries in the categories of lands, human diversity and ways of life, and aimed to celebrate photography as a powerful medium for raising awareness of tribal peoples. The judging panel included Survival s Director Stephen Corry, actor and Survival Ambassador Gillian Anderson, the BBC s Human Planet photographer Tim Allen, The Little Black Gallery s Co-founder Ghislain Pascal, Survival s Editorial consultant Joanna Eede, and Survival Italy Coordinator Francesca Casella. Stephen Corry said: An important criteria when selecting the winning images was that they convey a fair and accurate picture, and do not falsify the appearance or behaviour of their subjects. The range of highquality entries from around the globe shows that it is possible to take stunning photographs of contemporary tribal peoples without resorting to portraying them as either brutal or noble savages. Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples rights, celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1969 following an article by Norman Lewis in the UK s Sunday Times Magazine about the genocide of Brazilian Indians, which featured powerful images from the acclaimed photographer Don McCullin. Dates: 12 th December 2014 to 30 th January 2015 Open: Monday to Saturday 11am to 18.00 Web: www.photofusion.org SALON/14 Photofusion are pleased to present this year s Members exhibition, Photofusion SALON/14. Taking its name from the 18th and 19th century Parisian salons, this exhibition will showcase the work of 140 artists, whose photographic and video work will cover the gallery walls from floor to ceiling. A record number of entries were received this year over 1200 images representing the breadth of artistic talent throughout the membership. There were no categories or themes, the aim of Photofusion SALON is simply to showcase individual images that are powerful enough to stand alone in representation of a captivating story or concept. Submissions included a broad range of technical experimental photography, such as fragmenting light through a darkroom enlarger and image making through the use of a Microsoft Kinetic Sensor, through to documentary photography that deals with social and cultural issues in the Middle East. The exhibition will take you on a journey from Britain s Sunday Soldier s commemorative WWII re-enactments to the Albanian landscape with its recycled communist bunkers. Four photographers from the SALON/14 exhibition will be selected and awarded a bursary to develop their work for next year s SELECT/15, with mentoring and assistance from Photofusion staff. Last year s recipients, Chloe Borkett, Jochen Klein, Katarina Mudronova and Travis Hodges had a highly successful exhibition this summer which featured in the Telegraph and TimeOut online amongst others. Photofusion are pleased to confirm their continued collaboration with Hotshoe magazine through the Hotshoe Photofusion Award 2014. Judged by Hotshoe editor-at-large Miranda Gavin, the award will be presented on the opening night of the exhibition with the winner receiving a feature on the Hotshoe Blog and a free annual magazine subscription. Last year s recipient, Katarina Mudronova, has continued showcasing her work with her Strategic Cooking series recently selected to appear in Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed at The Photographers Gallery. Gallery visitors will be able to vote for the Public s Choice Award 2014 throughout the exhibition, resulting in three artists selected to have their work exhibited on the Photofusion Street Gallery after the exhibition. In addition to this, Photofusion are delighted to announce the inaugural Analogue Black and White Photography Award 2014, selected by Photofusion s master printer Nick Jones and Silverprint Gallery manager Fraser Miles. This major show will chart Bourdin s distinguished 40-year career from Man Ray s protégé to photography revolutionary in his own right and explore his pursuit of perfection. TATE MODERN Address: Tate Modern, The Eyal Ofer Galleries, Bankside, London SE1 9TG Dates: until 15 th March 2015 Open: 10am 6pm daily Cost: 14.50, Concessions 12.50 Web: CONFLICT, TIME, PHOTOGRAPHY From the seconds after a bomb is detonated to a former scene of battle years after a war has ended, this moving exhibition focuses on the passing of time, tracing a diverse and poignant journey through over 150 years of conflict around the world, since the invention of photography. In an innovative move, the works are ordered according to how long after the event they were created from moments, days and weeks to decades later. Photographs taken seven months after the fire bombing of Dresden are shown alongside those taken seven months after the end of the First Gulf War. Images made in Vietnam 25 years after the fall of Saigon are shown alongside those made in Nakasaki 25 years after the atomic bomb. The result is the chance to make never-before-made connections while viewing the legacy of war as artists and photographers have captured it in retrospect. The immediate trauma of war can be seen in the eyes of Don McCullin s Shell-shocked US Marine 1968, while the destruction of buildings and landscapes are documented by Simon Norfolk s Afghanistan: Chronotopia 2001. Different conflicts will also reappear from multiple points in time throughout the exhibition. The Second World War for example is addressed in Jerzy Lewczynski s 1960 photographs of the Wolf s Lair / Adolf Hitler s War Headquarters, Shomei Tomatsu s images of objects found in Nagasaki, Kikuji Kawada s epic project The Map made in Hiroshima in the 1960s, Michael Schmidt s Berlin streetscapes from 1980 and Nick Waplington s 1993 close-ups of cell walls from a Prisoner of War camp in Wales. The exhibition is staged to coincide with the 2014 centenary and concludes with new and recent projects by British, German, Polish and Syrian photographers which reflect on the First World War a century after it began. Cost: Free Web: www.take-a-view.co.uk LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2014 It's all change for this year's Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition. After seven successful years at the National Theatre, we are very excited about the move to another iconic location - the busiest station in Britain - London Waterloo. The exhibition will be held on the recently-built Mezzanine level of the station. Completed in the summer of 2012, the balcony provides a perfect location to display the winning entries from the competition; showcasing the very best of the British countryside in the very heart of the capital. We are the first event of this type to be held here and it's a great privilege for us. Not only will the photographs appear on display stands across the balcony but will also make an appearance on the amazing Motion@Waterloo, a 40m wide LCD screen which is the largest single indoor screen in the UK and spans the station from platforms 7 to 11.
