We are pleased to report that both Carole Mills and Caroline Farnes have since agreed to be co-opted onto the committee for 2015-16. Carole Mills has also agreed to taking on the very important office of Publicity Officer. Not leaving it all to the ladies, Roger Matthews agreed to take on the vacant office of Vice Chairman. TPS OUT AND ABOUT - A WEEKEND AWAY On Friday 21st August a few TPS members with camper-vans met up at a campsite near to Bodiam Castle in Sussex, to spend a weekend of photography, as well as enjoying food and drink and the pleasures of the outdoor life. I arrived first on the Friday afternoon, and after pitching up my motorhome I took a leisurely stroll in the sunshine along the River Rother to Bodiam itself. Although the castle was closing when I got there, I did get a few scenic shots under my belt before starting back along the river. I was then treated to a view of a Barn Owl which flew along the other bank of the river, staying ahead of me for several minutes, as it stopped to perch on the spindly trees lining the bank. Back at the campsite, Pam and Fred were the next to arrive in their VW camper, closely followed by Adrian and Clare in their Bongo. After consuming our meals we sat around outside, drinking and chatting in the balmy evening air. Saturday morning we all walked off to Bodiam, where we met up with Roger and had a coffee in the cafe before entering the castle grounds. It was a beautiful sunny day, blue skies with just faint puffy clouds to keep the photographic interest. We spent about 90 minutes exploring the castle, photographing it from every angle, and trying to avoid the steadily increasing volume of visitors. Then it was off the station to get a steam train ride to Tenterden. By this time, Glenn had also joined us, so in all there were 7 of us to enjoy the ride to and from Tenterden, plus a pub lunch, snooping around the antique shops, and generally looking for winning pictures. By 5 o'clock we were back at the campsite for some much needed R&R. Roger and Glenn left us to return home. In the evening Adrian produced his Fondue Set, and all five of us sat around the burner, dipping and chewing, and of course drinking! The night was finished off with some trial and error attempts at light painting - not entirely successfully, but we all learnt something. Finally after a good night's sleep, we all split up to head home as the rain clouds approached. A great weekend away. Photos Brian Smith Page 2 of 10

The series was created by the celebrated photojournalist as part of his vast photo-essay entitled Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age. The series describes the plight of the 50,000 gold miners who scaled the Serra Pelada mine everyday. The mine was famously controversial, employing thousands of local workers in perilous conditions. During the early 1980s, tens of thousands of prospectors flocked to the Serra Pelada site, which at its peak was said to be not only the largest open-air gold mine in the world, but also the most violent. During the height of the gold rush the mine was known for appalling conditions and violence, whilst the town beside it became notorious for both murder and prostitution. Among Salgado s most famous images, his Serra Pelada photographs are vertigo-inducing in their scale and depth. His cinematic compositions reveal the vast scale of the gruelling hell endured by the miners. The photographs are testament to Salgado's unofficial title of being the greatest documentary photographer working today. In the recently released Oscar-nominated biopic, 'The Salt of The Earth', Salgado discusses his experience at Serra Pelada: Every hair on my body stood on edge. The Pyramids, the history of mankind unfolded. I had travelled to the dawn of time.' Salgado has travelled to over one hundred countries during his long career and has been honoured with multiple international awards. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and honorary member of The Academy of Arts and Science in the United States. He was named Master of Photography at Photo London 2015. Web: http://tnyurl.com/ob4opeb VICTORIAN LONDON IN PHOTOGRAPHS The arrival of photography in London in 1839 changed the way people saw their city, and each other, forever. With the whoomph! of a photographer s flash, quite suddenly it was possible to see real life images captured in the flesh, rather than as an artist s sketch or painting. The collections at London Metropolitan Archives contain an extraordinary range of photographs from Queen Victoria s reign, recording the capital and its people in stunning detail. Whether in carefully posed studio portraits or images of people gathered in the street, it seems that almost everyone wanted to be recorded on camera. This exhibition delves into these collections to present some of most striking images of London and Londoners from the era, from the first known photograph of the capital to the opening of Blackwall Tunnel, taking in the Crystal Palace, the first Tube line and life on the city s streets. Rapacious, unchecked development, a growing gulf between the richest and poorest and a realisation that modern life is damaging to mental health. Anyway, enough about London in 2015: here are some photos of dead people. There are plenty of contemporary resonances in these images of London from 1839 to 1901. One thing above all else drove Victorian photographers, and saw their technology evolve incredibly quickly: change. Almost all these pictures many of them stunningly technically accomplished as well as being fascinating documents reflect a city and a society whose pace of change is both thrilling and terrifying. So we have the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London, who couldn t get the plates in their cameras fast enough to record the historic buildings getting pulled down around them. There was no legislation to protect architecture, so they were about all there was in terms of awareness-raising. At the same time, photographers strove to reveal the social iniquities beneath the Victorian dream of progress: the appalling slums just streets away from fashionable thoroughfares; the children cast aside by their parents; the homeless, the destitute, the maimed and the mad. Most moving is a series of portraits of inmates of the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. Literally shorn of luxuriant Victorian hairdos and dressed with institutional severity, these men and women look startlingly contemporary. The unusually close-up portraiture (presumably they had little choice) is also what we expect today when we associate photography with invasion and analysis as much as documentation. In context, though, the images bleakly reveal all the vulnerability of their subjects, and all the responsibilities that a city and a society might or might not choose to accept. With creativity and a bold pioneering spirit she took her camera to the streets and captured thousands of images of people and events in London, revealing unique observations of the city at the start of the 20th century. One hundred years later, a major new exhibition of her works at the Museum of London Docklands reveals the extraordinary story of this self-taught novice who turned photography into a business venture to support her family. Showcasing many images never seen before on public display, this is the first ever exhibition dedicated solely to Broom, featuring prints and original glass plate negatives, as well as the picture postcards of London that brought her substantial commercial success until her death in 1939. From parades of First World War soldiers and Suffragette processions to royal occasions and sporting events, view life in London through the lens of Christina Broom. Dates: 10th September to 9th October Open: Monday to Saturday 11am to 18.00 Web: www.photofusion.rg SPENCER MURPHY THE ABYSS GAZES INTO YOU The Abyss Gazes Into You by Spencer Murphy is a series of enigmatic images selected by the photographer through a process of reflecting on his practice and how his internal relationship to themes such as nature and mortality, desolation and beauty, hope and despair, have been represented through the medium of photography since he was given his first camera at the age of eleven. The project title is taken from the quote, And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you by Friedrich Nietzsche. Collectively, these images present a poignant statement about the relationship we have to time and, particularly for Murphy, the influence of his upbringing in an isolated corner of the Kentish countryside with only his imagination and surrounding woodland for company. Photography Exhibition Spencer Murphy While looking through his work to date, Murphy says: I never completely let go of my childhood belief in a world behind this one, hidden by a veil that every now and again slipped to reveal the infinite to those willing to look. And occasionally I would find myself looking at the pictures some of them landscapes, some of them portraits and feel that same sensation I d known as a child exploring the woods. The pictures chosen for this project each capture something of what the Swiss art historian Beat Wyss, in his discussion on Caspar David Friedrich s The Monk By The Sea, called the defenceless, top-speed collision between the ego and the cosmos. Friedrich s painting of a lone figure placed in a brutal landscape resonated powerfully with Murphy. Largely rooted in the principles of Romanticism, the images he presents in The Abyss Gazes Into You speak of the photographer s own response when confronted with the magnitude of nature and man s attempt to relate or control it. The exhibition features 17 colour photographs, taken on film Murphy s preferred medium due to its process of time, alchemy and the element of the unknown involved in the craft of analogue photography. While this project includes both portraits and landscapes specific to the theme of the exhibition, Murphy is widely known for his award-winning portraits including the 2013 Taylor Wessing Prize image of female jump jockey, Katie Walsh alongside a substantial portfolio of editorial commissions for magazines including The Guardian Weekend, The Telegraph Magazine, Time, Monocle and Wallpaper. His portraits have also appeared in the Rolling Stone Magazine, GQ and Dazed & Confused. Exhibitions of Murphy s work have been presented in Europe, North America and China and his work is held in the NPG s Permanent Collection. Drawn entirely from the world-class National Photography Collection, the exhibition features the Herschel Album (1864), a sequence of 94 images which Cameron considered to be her finest work to date. Compiled by Cameron as a gift for her friend and mentor, the scientist Sir John Herschel, the album is comprised of Cameron s bold, expressive portraits of influential friends, acquaintances and family members, including Alfred Tennyson and William Holman Hunt. The exhibition will also include rare images and objects such as the late photographs taken in Sri Lanka, her camera lens the only surviving piece of her photographic equipment and handwritten notes from her autobiography. Drawing their inspiration from the land and the sea, the showcased images seek to capture the feel of the fleeting moments created by the special quality of light in nature. Having an affair with the unsurpassed light in the landscape, all the artists are not only mistresses of imagery, but also great supporters of creative and imaginative techniques. The exhibition unites a range of styles and artistic interpretations, from classic grand views, through intimate details abundant in nature s riches, to painterly and abstract images delicately conveying the beauty to be found within the landscape. This ambitious exhibition not only presents personal takes on landscapes, it also emphasises the importance of photography in contemporary art. V&A MUSEUM Address: Room 38a, Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL Dates: until 11th October Open: 10am 5.45pm daily Cost: Free Web: www.vam.ac.uk CAPTAIN LINNAEUS TRIPE: PHOTOGRAPHER OF INDIA AND BURMA 1852-1860 This captivating exhibition of the pioneering 19th-century British photographer Captain Linnaeus Tripe features over 60 of his most striking views of Indian and Burmese landscape and architecture, taken between 1852-1860. Through these early photographs, Tripe explored the possibilities of this new medium, showcasing and documenting archaeological sites, monuments and landscapes, rarely seen in the West. Tripe creates an impression of the world around him, combining the keen eye of a surveyor with the sensibilities of an artist, while giving testimony to his emerging skills as photographer. CAPTURING THE CITY Exciting new initiative from RPS London in partnership with the Bank of England. Will one of your images feature in next year's exhibition? RPS London has teamed up with the Bank of England for an exciting photographic project called Capturing the City. We are looking for pictures that are based on some of the images from the Bank s archive. The best 20 images will be displayed in the exhibition Capturing the City: Photography at the Bank of England, which will be held at the Bank of England Museum. The exhibition will run for a year from January 2016. How to Participate Choose one or more of the locations shown in the Capturing the City (Archive) album at: http://tinyurl.com/pptfbgo Take a picture of the same location using as much creativity and imagination as you like. Please note that we are not looking for exact copies, we just need your image to depict the same place as the original. RPS Members: Create an album in the gallery section of the website and email the link to londonweb@rps.org. In the Title box, please indicate the code number of the corresponding archive image, which can be found in the Title boxes in the archive album. Last date for uploads is the 31st October 2015. There is no limit on the number of pictures you can upload. Please retain high-res copies of your images for printing purposes, if your images are selected for the exhibition. Images must be taken on or after the 20th August. If, however, you have any old archive images, we would be interested to see them too, but not as part of your submission.
