Step 1: Think about what you want The first step in goal setting is to think about what you want. Caught up in busy lives, few people ever take the time out to think about this. Think about major areas in your life: 1. Career 2. Finances 3. Health 4. Relationships 5. Education / Self Development 6. Spiritual What do you want to achieve in these areas? Think through them and pick one area that you feel, if you achieved something in it, it would have the greatest positive effect on your life. For this exercise, we are going to focus on one big goal. When you have seen how it works, you can always come back and use it again for other goals. Spend 2 minutes thinking about the different areas. If you are like most people, you won t need the whole 2 minutes since there is one area that just cries out for you to set a big goal in. It s the one area where you feel you are not performing and that could use a kick-start. Once you have decided on which area of life you want to concentrate on, pat yourself on the back! You have completed the first step. WELL DONE!! Move on to the next step STEP 2: Set your goal Now its time to get more specific. You have chosen an area that you want to address. People often make the mistake of thinking that something like I want to make more money is a goal. Its not. Its a wish. Goals are much more specific than that. In the above example, focussing on a particular amount of money ( 1,000,000 ) is going to be more useful than just thinking about a vague idea of more money. Our minds prefer to deal with the solid and the tangible than the vague and unclear. Spend 2 minutes thinking about a specific goal that if you accomplished, it would give you huge satisfaction. Do that now. Once you have come up with a goal that you think would be fantastic to achieve, lets check that this is a goal we can work with: 1. Is the goal measurable? Goals like inner peace are great to have, but the mind finds it really hard to focus on progress, when it can t measure it. In cases where the end result is hard to measure, it may be necessary to focus on other measures. For instance, with inner peace, you might use the goal of meditating for a certain amount of time every day.
2. Is the goal phrased in the positive? A goal like don t smoke focuses on the negative. It actually focuses on the thing that you don t want. Re-phrasing goals in the positive, will focus your mind on what you want, not what you don t want. This is hugely important when it comes to achieving your goals. 3. Is your goal realistic? It s good to set high goals, but if they are completely out of the realm of anything you have ever achieved before, then you will actually be setting yourself for disappointment. Someone who has only ever earned 20,000 a year, suddenly deciding they want to earn 1,000,000 within a year is impressive, but the likelihood of success is so low that this goal would only serve to demotivate them. They would actually be using the goal setting process to their advantage much more if they aimed for 30,000 to begin with, keeping in mind the ultimate goal of 1,000,000. Remember, moving towards your goal is the most important thing. And building up small victories, will give you the momentum to keep moving towards the big goals. If your goal satisfied those 3 conditions, well done. Give yourself another pat on the back and move on to Step 3 Step 3: Write it down and Set your Deadline This is a crucial step. Its time to put your pen where your mouth is! Thinking about goals is all good and well but it s when you write it down that the real magic happens. There is something hugely powerful about committing a goal to paper. It sets about a chain reaction in your mind, which makes the achievement of the goal infinitely more likely. So this step is all about finding a piece of paper, and writing down the goal you want to achieve. An important part of this is to decide when you want to achieve the goal by. For this exercise, I want you to limit yourself to goals that you think you can achieve in the next 3-6 months. Why 3-6 months? Because I want you to get a taste of goal setting success as quickly as possible, and if we set larger goals that take longer, it s going to be harder to see the progress. If the goal you set in Step 2 is too large to achieve in 3-6 months, then pare it back a little. Now, I want you to get a nice clean sheet of paper and I want you to write down your goal, and when you will achieve it by. Even if you can t find a clean sheet of paper, find anything. A cocktail napkin, a scrap of newspaper, anything! Just write it down! Have you done it? Great! On to Step 4 Step 4: Break it down into steps This step sometimes scares people, but it shouldn t. If the idea of breaking down the goal into lots of little steps is too daunting, how about just deciding the next step? Forward planning is ideal, but at the very least you should know the next step you need to achieve. Think about what things you would need to do, to achieve your goal. If it s to save a certain amount of money, the next step could be to open a savings account at your local bank.
The smaller the first step is the better. This process is all about building momentum. And small steps create the momentum we need to achieve big goals. Once you have decided what the next step, or next few steps are, write these down on a piece of paper. Have you decided what you need to do next? Good! Now, decide when you will do the next step by. Make it in the next day or two. Especially if the first step is very small. Ideally, you should be able to achieve the first step today! Have you written the next step and when you will do it by? If you have, then move on to Step 5 Step 5: Find a Goal Supervisor This is a REALLY IMPORTANT STEP. It s often going to be the difference between success and failure. You need to find one person, (preferably more) that you will tell your goal to. This person has a very important function. They are your GOAL SUPERVISOR. You need to commit to them, that you will accomplish the goal you set. If this means signing a contract that says you will, then that s what you have to do. You have to commit unconditionally to achieve your goal to them. And just as importantly, they have to commit to harass, cajole and agitate you if you don t achieve what you say you will. They have to keep you honest to the goals you set. That s the deal. If you can find more than one person to do this, then that s even better. After you have committed to achieving your goal, you have to tell them the first step that you decided to take in Step 4. Remember? The small step that you could achieve in the next day or two? Tell them about it, and commit to getting it done in the next day or two. No one achieves great success without a team behind them. There are no exceptions to this rule. So don t break it. You need all the support you can get to achieve your goal and that means getting a team behind you. Get the first step done, and report back to your GOAL SUPERVISOR. Then you can move on to Step 6 Step 6: Action, Action, Action Setting goals will get you started, but the only real way you are going to achieve them is with action. And so, you need to commit to taking action every day towards your goal. To help you with this, you need to write out your goal on lots of pieces of paper, and leave them everywhere! Keep a copy next to your bedside, in the car, in your work bag, on the bathroom mirror. Remind yourself every day and every moment of every day that you have a big goal that you have committed to accomplish.
But more important than the reminder of the goal, is the continual action that pushes you towards your goal. This means keeping in close contact with your goal supervisor, and setting little goals every day. Don t get overwhelmed by the larger goal and everything you need to achieve. You only need to do the next step. That s all. And as long as you keep committing to your goal supervisor to get the next step done by the deadline you said you would, you will keep moving towards your goal. Step 7: Persistence If a goal is worth achieving, then you can be assured that you will run up against resistance and obstacles on the way to achieving it. This is to be expected, and should not come as a shock. You will need to be flexible and open to new approaches to get around some of the obstacles, but your biggest asset is going to be the determination and commitment to achieve your goal come what may. Your Goal Supervisor is a key ally in this process. After all, you committed to them that you would achieve this goal. You gave them your word. So, when you come across an obstacle, you must be committed to finding a way around this. You have promised to deliver on the goal. You can t let them down. Read inspiring stories of people who overcame great difficulties to achieve their success. And remember, EVERY person who ever achieved success had to overcome HUGE obstacles. Talk about the problems with others and try and find solutions. Always focus on solutions. And remember there is always someone who has overcome the same problem that you face now. Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
