Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Key Words & Phrases: Conscious Define: aware of and responding to one s surroundings. Connotation: limitations of thought of the people by the Party Analysis: This quote insinuates the people will never become conscious of the true power they have, and the role they have in the government.

Key Words & Phrases: Rebel Define: rise in opposition or armed resistance to an established government or ruler. Connotation: to fight back against who has ultimate control, the Party Analysis: the Party is so powerful they have ultimate control over the people and they believe the people will not rebel over someone so powerful.

Key Words & Phrases: They Define: used to refer to two or more people or things previously mentioned or easily defined. Connotation: talking about the proles Analysis: Orwell doesn t call them specifically by name because they aren t worth a name. Gives the illusion of a totalitarian regime where people are just people.

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Literary Device: Chiasmus Define: words are repeated in reverse order. Explanation: Orwell uses the same words in both parts of the sentence to connect the ideas easily. The use of the exact same words make readers think about what the quote is saying, rather than brushing passed it.

Literary Device: Paradox Define: absurd or contradictory statement that proves to be true after explanation. Explanation: At first, the quote may make no sense. After reading it again, readers can understand how perfectly this quote fits into the world of Oceania.

Literary Device: Balanced Sentence Define: sentence made up of two parts that have equal length and the same grammatical structure. Explanation: This makes the sentence crisp and ties in the message. The balanced sentence shows the unbalanced society held by Big Brother.

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Questions Do you believe this quote to be true?

Questions 1984 is full of images and ideas that do not directly affect the plot, nevertheless attain thematic importance. What are some of these symbols and motifs, and how does Orwell use them? - The paperweight - Shows Winston s attempts to escape or undermine the oppressive rule of the party.

Questions In his journal, Winston writes that the hope of the rebellion lies in the proles. Why does Winston have major blind faith in a group he s not apart of? Do the proles have any characteristics that will help rebel against Big Brother?

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Personal Reaction: Reganne When reading this quote I automatically thought back to when I read Fahrenheit 451 freshman year. I think about what Bradbury and Orwell s thought processes must have been while creating these societies and writing these novels. How did they view their society? Do their predictions of the future apply to our current society?

Personal Reaction: Mady When looking at this quote the first thing that struck my mind was why would a person revolt against their government? What means could be so terrible to cause this? Then I remembered who our president elect was and the decisions he was making and it all made sense. The immigration ban, defunding planned parenthood. It makes sense why so many people are protesting. Why so many people don t agree with the president's choices.

Personal Reaction: Tucker Orwell s quotes from 1984 made me think back to dystopian novels I read before this book. Obviously, 1984 was written before any modern literature I ve read, but it s easy to compare ideas in books like The Hunger Games and Divergent to 1984. Katniss and Tris are apart of the machine before destroying it. Though the girls certainly had more bravery and cunning attributes than Winston, all the characters are able to spark the idea of a rebellion.

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).

Synthesis Big Ideas: Rebellion, Repression Themes: Power, Manipulation, Corruption

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious, (Orwell 70).
