German P&T Study Text optional: Institutsname Prof. Dr. Hans Mustermann www.fzd.de Mitglied der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft

German P&T Study Module A: Starting point and boundary conditions waste amounts and final disposal strategies Definition and description of scenarios possible ways for transmutation in the view of the phase out, European vs. national Technological challenges of P&T description of the major challenges to be solved on the way to a possible industrial application Current status of R&D discussion of possible transmutation systems, current R&D status of P&T, development gaps, and future research strategies Safety aspects special safety aspects including all steps of the P&T cycle International projects & competences in Germany what is going on around the world and which support could the German industry give Module B: socio-scientific, the ecologic, the economic aspects, and the legal provisions Over all project management by acatech Seite 5/9

German P&T Study Current Status: acatech Studie: In print Handover of draft October 24 th, 2013 acatech Position (political recommendations): last discussions finished in February delivery mid 2014 Finally a very successful project Consensus on the conclusions between the different parties has been achieved Some new views on P&T under the boundary conditions of the nuclear phase out decision Seite 6/9 Handover was not very promising negative attitude against reprocessing and fast reactors by the BMBF

German P&T Study - Recommendations acatech Reommendations short P&T-research in Europaen context and examination of future German contribution is advised Research should not lead to any dependence regarding application of P&T An interdisciplinary study should be worked out as basis for participation on P&T in Europe including planning of processes to involve the public Germany should work on the European perspective as well as on a national level for the incorporation of the objectives of the phase out decision into the P&T research The German industry should understand the possible application of P&T in Europe as chance and should contribute if applicable Research should concentrate on efficient partitioning efficient transmutation safety evaluation of the facilities social implication of all options The research should be arranged in an interdisciplinary way to be able evaluate an communicate the scientific and technological results A research alliance should be installed Seite 7/9
