Grantee of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, CNPq,Brazil. Title: Non-linear Independent Component Analysis for Online Event Selection based on High-Energy and Highly Segmented Calorimetry Information (original version in Portuguese). Advisors: José Manoel de Seixas e Luiz Pereira Calôba. Abstract: The ATLAS detector operates in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). A huge amount of information (~60 TB/s) is generate in ATLAS but only a reduced part of it is relevant for the experiment. Considering this, an efficient online event selection system is required for proper operation of the detector. My Ph.D research investigated the application of non-linear independent component analysis to the ATLAS detector calorimeter information for efficient feature extraction. The independent components were used to feed an artificial neural network based online classification system. M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Federal University of Bahia, Brazil (2002-2004). Grantee of the Higher Education Personnel Training Coordination, CAPES, Brazil. Title: Monitoring of Voltage Regulators using Vibration Analysis and Intelligent Systems (original version in portuguese). Advisor: Antonio Cezar de Castro Lima. Abstract: On-load tap changers (OLTC) are electrical energy distribution equipment used to maintain the line voltage within acceptable levels. They are susceptible to different failure causes mainly due to the internal mechanical parts which are required to provide fast tap-changing whenever the input-output voltage ratio changes. It is very important for energy distribution companies to proper schedule the maintenance procedure of OLTCs and avoid equipment failures. In my M.Sc. research was designed and constructed the analog instrumentation required to acquire and Curriculum Vitae - Eduardo F. Simas Filho 1 / 7
digitalize vibration signals from OLTC. This digital information was used to feed an automatic decision support system which aimed to indicate the occurrence o eminent failures. Intelligent techniques such as genetic algorithms and self-organizing maps were applied in order to identify possible failure signatures. ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS Digital Signal Processing for Efficient Event Selection in ATLAS Detector at the LHC: this project aims to propose and test digital signal processing techniques (such as neural networks and latent variables analysis) to be used in the ATLAS detector. ATLAS is one of the main detectors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN. It is supported by the local (state) foundation for research support (FAPESB). This is part of the Brazilian ATLAS detector collaboration, which involves six Brazilian research institutes. High Performance Passive Sonar Systems: in a partnership with the Brazilian Navy Research Institute (IPqM) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) this research project aims to investigate the application of signal processing techniques (such as latent variables analysis, support vector machines and deep learning) to the development of efficient detection and classification systems for passive sonar. It is supported by a national foundation (CAPES). Signal Processing for Non-destructive Testing Applications: this project has the purpose of investigate the use of latent variables analysis and intelligent classification systems for automatic detection and classification of flaws in materials and structures using nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. Among the used NDT techniques there are ultrasound testing and pulse eddy currents. This work is a partnership with the Federal Institute for Science, Education and Technology (IFBA) and is supported by the local (state) foundation for research support (FAPESB).
