skacel collection, inc. www.skacelknitting.com Evolution Shawl A free download pattern designed by Rachel Henry for The Fiber Factor, Challenge #1 and This heart-shaped shawl follows the evolution of a knitter. It begins with garter stitch, representing the garter-stitch scarf that so many of us knitters began with. Then a bit of stockinette appears, as the beginner knitter learns to purl. Once the basic stitches are mastered, textured patterns like the diamond pattern become possible. Then, a knitterly friend sugge that cables are "not that hard" - perhaps the novice knitter would like to try? Another friend encourages the knitter to try a bit of simple lace - just a few yarn overs and decreases, after all, and the wrong side rows are all purl. Each pattern builds upon the last; each pattern is made up of knits and purls, manipulated to form apparent complexity. But, one stitch at a time, all knitting is conquerable. The final stitch pattern in this shawl combines rightside and wrong-side patterning, cables, twisted stitches, lace, and unusual decreases for a gorgeous exuberance that flares all around the edge of the finished shawl. SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate YARN WEIGHT: Sport FINISHED SIZE: Approx 85" (across top) x 30 deep (at spine) Featured Yarn: Unisono by Zitron, 100% Merino - 328 yds / 100g. Shown in Color #1173 (Pistachio); 3 hanks. Optional Yarn: Rylie by HiKoo, 50% Baby Alpaca, 25% Mulberry Silk, 25% Linen - 274 yds / 100g. 3 hanks. addi Needles: 4.5 mm (approx US 7) 40 circular needle Additional Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, locking stitch marker All yarn and needles distributed by Gauge: 20 and 32 rows = 4 x 4 in St st (blocked) Note: Exact gauge is not crucial for this project; however, it can affect yardage needed to complete the shawl. To save time, check your gauge and read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. SPECIAL STITCHES 3-in-1: (k1, yo, k1) all into the next stitch (increases 2 stitches). Twisted SK2P: This is an SK2P with the top stitch twisted (slip 1 stitch purlwise, k2tog, pass slipped st over). Reverse Twisted SK2P: This is the mirror image of a Twisted SK2P (SSK, twist the next st and leave it on the LH needle; return just-worked stitch from RH to LH needle, pass twisted st over; return just-worked st to RH needle). INSTRUCTIONS: Note: Line-by-line written instructions can be found after the charted portion of this pattern. Section 1: Garter Stitch Begin by making a Garter Stitch tab, as follows: Cast on 3 with a provisional cast on. Knit 7 rows. Pick up 3 along the edge, knit into the three provisional stitches = 9.
