The Mid-Tudor Polity c. 1540-1560 Each volume in the 'Problems in Focus' series is designed to make available to students important new work on key historical problems and periods that they encounter in their courses. Each volume is devoted to a central topic or theme, and the most important aspects of this are dealt with by specially commissioned studies from scholars in the relevant field. The editorial Introduction reviews the problem or period as a whole, and each chapter provides an assessment of the particular aspect, pointing out the areas of development and controversy, and indicating where conclusions can be drawn or where further work is necessary. An annotated bibliography serves as a guide to further reading.

Acknowledgemen ts No volume of this type could come to fruition without the co-operation and generous support of numerous people along the way. Dur colleagues-in-print have made the task of editing run smoothly by their prompt and conscientious efforts in contributing. Derick Mirfin and Sarah Mahaffy of Macmillan Press Ltd have been enormously helpful in guiding the work through the publication process from beginning to end, and in introducing to two novices the strategies of editing. We have also benefited from the patience and expertise of Paul Slack, and of Susan Dickinson of Macmillan Press Ltd, at several points along the way. Although they should bear none of the responsibility for our efforts, the volume would be poorer without their help. The skilful and intelligent typing of Beverley Cobb was an invaluable asset in preparing the final manuscript, as was the support of the Arts and Science Faculty of Concordia University, which placed her talents at our service. Finally, we are grateful to Angela Britton for her assistance with the proofs and index. S.]. L. R. T.
