Frits Beurskens CEPI Chairman Deputy Chairman, Smurfit Kappa Group Frits Beurskens holds a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Science from the Technical University in Eindhoven. He started his career working for Thomassen & Drijver Verblifa (can making industry) for 12 years, reaching the position of General Manager in 1986. He then joined Zinkwit Nederland / Afox België as Managing Director, where he later became CEO. In 1990 he started his career with KNP (Kappa) joining the company as Managing Director for the Business Unit Roermond Zülpich. In 1998 Mr Beurskens became Kappa Packaging President /CEO and since December 2005 he has been Deputy Chairman of the Smurfit Kappa Group. Mr Beurskens holds several posts at this moment, he is Board member at Océ-Technologies, Chairman of the Board Smurfit Kappa Dutch Pension Fund, Chairman of the Supervisory Board Smurfit Kappa Nederland and Chairman of CEPI.
Jaime de Jesus Lopes Silva Portuguese Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Jaime de Jesus Lopes Silva was born in Almeida in 1954. He is married and has two children. Mr Silva graduated in Economics from the Higher Institute of Economics at the University of Lisbon. He worked as principal Executive Director at the Directorate General for Companies and Industry (Food Industry Unit) of the European Commission and coordinated Bilateral and Multilateral Commercial Negotiations in the Agro-Industrial Area - 1994-2005. As Chief Advisor Mr Silva worked for the Permanent Portuguese Representation to the European Union in Brussels from 2001 until 2002. He then became spokesperson at the Special Agricultural Committee of the Council of Ministers for Agriculture, responsible for the coordination of agricultural and phytosanitary matters. Afterwards he joined the Ministry of Agriculture as a member of the Executive Staff. Since 2005 he is Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of the XVIIth Constitutional Government.
Teresa Presas CEPI Managing Director * Teresa Presas was born in 1952 in Portugal and has a degree in psychology from the Instituto de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon. From 1972 to 1974 she worked for the Consumer Research Department of Lintas International. She has worked as a journalist for the Semanario Expresso in Lisbon and has also worked on external & international relations at the Portuguese Film Institute. Ms Presas entered into the paper industry in 1982 as Director of Communication and Marketing Services for Tetra Pak Portugal. She later went on to become Director of Communication and Environment for Tetra Pak Europe and then, Vice President of European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa and Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs for Tetra Pak International. Between 1991 and 2003 she was a member of the Board and Executive Committee of various organisations including, ACE (the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), ASSURE (Association for the Sustainable Use and Recovery of Resources in Europe) and EUROPEN (European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment). Philippe CHALMIN Associate professor of International Affairs, PARIS DAUPHINE UNIVERSITY A graduate from HEC Business School, he holds a doctorate in economic history from the Sorbonne in Paris. He is an associate professor at Paris-Dauphine University where he heads the Master in International Affairs programme. Philippe Chalmin is a specialist on international commodity markets and is the general editor of the United Nations Commodity Yearbook published by UNCTAD ("Rapport Cyclope" in French). He is a columnist in some major French newspapers and appears regularly on radios and TV's. He has done major research on the dynamics of clusters in France and world wide.
Dolf Gielen Senior Analyst, International Energy Agency Dolf Gielen is a Senior Energy Analyst working in the Energy Technology and R&D Office of the International Energy Agency in Paris since 2002. His main task is to advise the IEA member governments regarding energy technology policies. At this moment he is coordinating the IEA activities in the field of industrial energy efficiency in the framework of the G8 Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development. Also he is managing the forthcoming Energy Technology Perspectives 2008 analysis of the Agency. Dr Gielen studied Chemical Engineering at the Technical University Eindhoven and Environmental Sciences at Utrecht University. He has a PhD from the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands. From 1992 till 2000 he worked for the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN). From 200 to 2002 he stayed as a visiting scientist at the Japanese National Institute for Environmental Sciences (NIES). Dolf Gielen is author of five IEA books and has written more than 50 peer reviewed scientific papers.
Günter Verheugen Vice President, European Commission Günter Verheugen was born in 1944 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He studied history, sociology and politics in Cologne and Bonn from 1965 until 1969. Mr Verheugen began his career as head of the public relations division at the Federal Ministry of Interior and later joined the Federal Foreign Office as head of analysis and information task force. In 1982 he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and became member of the German Bundestag in 1983 until 1999 and joined the Foreign Affairs Committee. Between 1987 and 1989 he was editor-in-chief of the SPD magazine Vorwärts and in 1993 Mr Verheugen was Federal Party Manger of the SPD. Mr Verheugen was appointed Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary Group for Foreign, Security and Development policy from 1994 until 1997. He then became Chairman of the Socialist International Peace, Security and Disarmament Council. In 1998 he was appointed Minister of State for the Federal Foreign Office. Since September 1999 Mr Verheugen is a member of the European Commission, in 2004 he became Vice President and holds the post as Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry.
Mikko Kosonen Executive Vice-President, Sitra the Finnish Innovation Fund PhD (Econ) Mikko Kosonen is the Executive Vice President and member of the strategic management of Sitra. He is responsible for heading the newlyestablished Innovations and New Solutions unit. The unit s mandate includes the development and implementation of measures that are in line with Sitra s mission of revitalising the Finnish innovation environment. Before joining Sitra Mikko Kosonen worked for over twenty years in Nokia Group. His tasks covered the roles of CIO and SVP, Business Infrastructure and Corporate Planning, of the Nokia Group. Additionally, he is the author of many articles printed in influential business and research publications on the subject of international business, strategy, organization and knowledge management. He is the co- author with Professor Yves Doz of the June 2007 HBR article 'The New Deal at the Top' and forth-coming book (Nov 2007) 'Fast Strategy: How Strategic Agility Helps You Stay Ahead of the Game'.
