INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR BALCO, INC. RETROFIT STAIR NOSINGS FOR RENOVATION Document Control No. SNI1002 The following installation instructions are very important. Read them carefully, and be sure you understand them completely before you begin any work. STORAGE & HANDLING Store this product in the horizontal position in a clean, dry location. This is a finished product. Store this product in a protected area. This product may be provided with a protective tape covering. Do not store stair nosings in direct sunlight. Do not remove the protective tape covering until the stair nosings are installed. Remove the protective tape from the stair nosings immediately after their installation. TOOLS REQUIRED This is a list of tools and materials recommended for use in the installation of these stair nosings. These tools and materials are not provided by Balco, Inc. A. General Purpose Construction Adhesive INSTALLATION These installation instructions are for use in the installation of all standard and glow-in-the-dark retrofit stair nosings. Balco, Inc. recommends that these stair nosings be installed from top tread down. These systems are primarily designed to be surface mounted to the stair treads. The stair nosings shall be installed as follows: STEP 1. Review Balco, Inc. approved shop drawings for types and locations. STEP 2. To ensure proper installation of the nosings, all stair treads that are worn and dished need to be re-leveled with a quick setting and self-leveling compound (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). 2

Document Control No. SNI1002 STEP 3. STEP 4. Select a nosing, and place it into its installed position on the stair tread. Ensure that the nosing is level, plumb, and properly aligned. Use the factory drilled holes in the nosing to mark the locations for the anchors on the stair treads (see Figure 3). NOTE: IF TAPCON ANCHORS ARE PROVIDED FOR INSTALLATION OF THE STAIR NOSINGS, A CARBIDE DRILL BIT IS NEEDED. USE THE CARBIDE DRILL BIT(S) TO DRILL THE ANCHOR HOLES FOR TAPCONS. THE HOLES FOR TAPCON CONCRETE ANCHORS SHOULD BE 1/4" GREATER IN LENGTH THAN THE FASTENERS. IF SHEET METAL SCREWS ARE PROVIDED (FSM01S), IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO DRILL PILOT HOLES INTO THE METAL STAIR TREAD FOR THE ATTACHMENT OF THE STAIR NOSING. IF MACHINE SCREWS ARE PROVIDED, IT IS NECESSARY TO DRILL AND TAP THE ANCHOR HOLES INTO THE METAL STAIR TREAD. STEP 5. STEP 6. STEP 7. STEP 8. STEP 9. STEP 10. Remove the nosing from its installed position and, drill the anchor holes into the tread. Remove all dirt and debris from the stair tread. Ensure that the treads are clean. If plugs and machine screws are used to install the stair nosings, insert a plug into its respective anchor hole. Ensure that the top of each plug is flush with the surface of the tread. Apply a minimum 1/8" bead of construction adhesive (by others) to the underside of the stair nosing (see Figure 4). Apply the adhesive to the full length of the nosing in a zigzag pattern from the front of the nosing to its back edge. Place the nosing back into its installed position, and attach the nosing to the stair tread using the fasteners provided by the factory (see Figure 5 and Figure 6). Repeat Step 3 through Step 9 for each stair nosing. 4

WARRANTY POLICY Balco, Inc. warrants to its purchasers that all products sold by it will be free from manufacturing and material defects. Any defective product will be replaced or repaired free of any charge, provided a claim is brought to our attention, in writing, within the established warranty period following the date of shipment by us and provided our examination shows the product has failed under the terms of this warranty. The established warranty period for exterior joint cover systems (Duraflex TM) is five (5) years provided the systems are installed by a Balco Certified Installer. The established warranty period for grids and mats is two (2) years. The established warranty period for all other Balco, Inc. products is one (1) year. Balco, Inc. will not be responsible for installation costs involved in such repair or replacement. Balco, Inc. shall have no obligation under this warranty if owner subjects materials to improper conditions (refer to Balco's installation instructions) This is in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied, and is the sole warranty extended by Balco, Inc. Our liability under this warranty is limited to repair or replacement and does not include any responsibility for consequential or other damage of any nature.
