HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TOOLS I NEED The mechanic will need a variety of starting tools for the repair industry. The mechanic of today does not have it easy when performing repairs on cars and trucks. The newest models contain components that require specialized tools for removal and repair and the trends always change. The mechanic has to work on a variety of vehicles unless he works at a dealership that services only one type and model. That does not mean he won't be required to work on used trade-models. The mechanic can be best served if he concentrates on the basic, standard tools required of all mechanics, since without them nothing could be repaired. Socket Sets Sockets are an essential part of the tool inventory. The mechanic needs a variety of socket sets in metric and standard versions. Drive sizes come in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2-inch--all need to be considered. Deep-well and shallow sockets, divided between six-point and 12-point head selections should be included. Screwdrivers, Star and Clutch-Head Drivers All manner of screwdrivers are needed to remove any screw or fastener encountered. Screwdrivers, both slot and Phillips head, help to remove any type of screw encountered. Long-shaft and short versions can reach into difficult areas. As well as screwdrivers, startype and clutch-head drivers help in extricating foreign screw heads. Complete sets cover every job imaginable.
Hammers A variety of hammers comes in handy for striking and driving objects. The mechanic must have pounding and driving tools. Different sized ball-peen hammers, sledge hammers, rubber hubcap mallets and lead shot-filled plastic hammers all have uses in basic auto repair. Wrenches End or box-end wrenches are a must for nuts and bolts. Whether box-end or open-end, wrenches provide all around nut and bolt removing ability. Complete sets will tackle any job or repair situation. Six-point or 12-point heads have their place in all tool boxes. Fuel and brake line wrenches make removing fuel line nuts and brake bleeder valves a snap- -nothing can replace their versatility. All sizes and angles need to be included. Air Impact Wrenches The air impact wrench delivers great torque for removing stubborn bolts. Pneumatically operated wrenches in both 3/8 and 1/2-inch drive sizes handle very stubborn nuts and bolts--essential to the mechanics inventory. Shops supply air compressors for their use.
Pliers and Wire Cutters Pliers are nothing more than strong fingers for gripping and tearing. Pliers for gripping, large-jaw channel locks and wire cutters help round out a mechanic's tool box. These gripping and cutting tools have no equal when finger strength alone will not suffice. Pry bars and Pickle Forks Pry bars can wedge front-end parts aside for easy access, delivering much needed torque strength. Pickle forks find their use for extracting ball joints and tie rod ends. Allen Wrenches Allen wrenches are needed for small jobs, like on dashboards Allen wrenches, with their hex-heads, must be used on some front end parts, oil plugs and small electronic components. Many dashboards require Allen wrenches for removing cluster gauges and digital accessories. Tool Boxes Small tool boxes won't do--large double-drawer boxes are needed for large inventories. Generally, a four-drawer bottom box with a six-drawer top box represents the bare essentials for tool storage. Larger sizes hold more storage area for a wider variety.
Electric Drills Drill motors and bits come in handy for pilot holes and removing rivets from factory-sealed ball joints. Hand-held electric drill motors come in handy for reaming wheel cylinders and drilling out factory sealed ball joints. They replace chisels in many cases and make jobs faster, requiring less effort. A complete set of drills, hole saws and grinding wheels rounds out the drill set for applications of all cutting and grinding. Hack Saw Hack saws are the only saw a mechanic might use. The hack saw shows its merits in auto repair. Easy to use, they quickly cut through large electrical looms, radiator hoses, fuel and brake lines, when wire cutters will not adequately complete the job. Several blade edges give versatility to any large or small cuts needed. Torque Wrench and Others The foot-pound torque wrench is vital for tightening all nuts and bolts properly. The torque wrench comes in inch-pound and foot-pound measurement sizes. The foot-pound wrench sees more usage in the auto repair industry, making it essential to tighten down all fasteners, nuts and bolts to factory specifications. Note: One of the most used wrenches in the industry happens to be the oil filter wrench because no other tool will get the job done.
