SOLID WOOD PRODUCT INFO Nothing compares to the beauty of Solid Wood when it comes to cabinet doors. With M and J Woodcraft s Solid Wood Collection, every door is unique, each kitchen is a work of art. These doors are the perfect choice for any room in the office or home including kitchens, pantries, bedrooms, closets, vanities, dens, entertainment centres, and even furniture. Solid Wood doors and drawer fronts are available in a full range of styles and species, from the timeless Shaker styles to the traditional Raised look. Our stock species include the staples like Maple, Oak, Alder and Cherry. We also regularly produce doors from Black Walnut, VG Fir and some exotic species like Sapelli Mahogany. All materials are purchased from sustainable sources, from lumber mills across North American. The veneered centre panels are also sourced domestically, with the core made from 100% recycled EPP certified MDF. M and J's Solid Wood doors are built with high-quality Tongue and Groove construction, so you can be confident they will out-last the cabinets they are installed on. A standard clear coat will enhance the natural beauty and character of the solid wood, while our stain options allow you to tint the look to your desired colour range. If you would like to do the finishing yourself, our unfinished doors are ready for a quick sand and the finish of your choice when they leave our plant. MAINTENANCE AND CARE As with any material, exposure to sunlight, cooking oils, and smoke will discolour the Natural Wood or finish. Each species has its own characteristics that need to be considered. Regular Cleaning Guidelines A soft cotton cloth dampened with warm water is all that is required to clean the everyday spills and splatters. You can use a mild dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water to clean tougher stains. Wipe all surfaces dry immediately after cleaning. Clean spills immediately. Prolonged exposure to food, water, oil, or other liquids can permanently stain or damage the finish. Sponges or dish clothes used for regular dishes can contain food or oil residue which will result in a hazy film. Always use a fresh, clean cotton cloth. Cleaning Products to Avoid Harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners Solvent or Petroleum based products Ammonia (or products containing ammonia) Bleach (or products containing bleach) Silicone based cleaning or polishing products Avoid Moisture Damage Avoid draping damp cloths or towels on cabinet doors, or letting any water stay on the surface for a prolonged period. This can damage the finish over time. Avoid Light Damage Exposure to direct sunlight can darken or discolour the Natural Wood components. Some species are extremely sensitive to UV light exposure. Use drapes or blinds to avoid this. Be especially careful with parts that are only partially exposed to direct sunlight, as discolouration patterns caused by this can be even more noticeable. Avoid Heat Damage Extreme or prolonged heat exposure can damage cabinet doors and components. The location and installation of large appliances (stoves & dishwashers) needs to be considered when designing the space. Always use a hood fan when cooking on the stovetop to help disperse heat properly. Also, be careful using kettles, hot plates or other heat generating appliances directly under or beside your cabinetry. 2

INSTALLATION AND DESIGN TIPS As with any material, it is crucial to understand its capabilities and limitations before working with it. Doing so will save you time, and can avoid future problems which can be costly. Contact our sales team any time to discuss any of your specific questions in detail. BASIC INSTALLATION GUIDELINES TOP VIEW Care must be taken when installing doors near any source of heat. Fillers and barriers need to be installed to deflect heat from ovens, stove tops, and other appliances. Please see warranty for heat related information. It is recommended that a minimum 1 ½ wide filler be fitted to the cabinet side adjacent to the stove and applicable stove tops with front exhaust vents. MDF heat shields are available for purchase, painted to compliment several of our popular colours. For wall mounted ovens, in addition to the installation of side fillers as recommended above, an additional 3 X ¾ must be fitted horizontally above the oven unit, protruding slightly beyond the face of the doors. Use caution when cutting or scribing any parts to fit. We do not recommend cutting any finished parts as it may cause chipping or damage the coating. We recommend that we drill for hinges before the doors are finished. If you choose to drill your own hinges, ensure that work surfaces are clear and clean before drilling for hinges. Small pieces of debris can scratch the surfaces as the doors are positioned. SIDE VIEW Before you drill for hinges, refer to our recommended drilling parameters and check the hinge manufacturer's recommendations. Drilling in the wrong position (or with the wrong size drills) can cause irreparable damage (or sagging over time). DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS All of the standard edge and inside profiles are interchangeable. Stile and Rail widths are also adjustable. If you see a design that we aren t offering we will work with you to create it. End Gables and s are often made from Veneered s, in matching species and finish. Plant-on end gables can be used to hide the standard white boxes. It is recommended that all components for a project are finished together so the colour remains consistent. Larger doors often exhibit some amount of warp (see warranty guidelines). Using extra hinges can help to hold the doors straighter. Adding extra middle rails can help to minimize any warp. Make sure you understand the characteristics of each species, and what is allowable in each species grade. Our sales staff will be more than happy to answer any questions. Certain species, like Cherry, exhibit characteristics that some customers may see as defects, but are a natural part of the wood and should be expected. 3

WOOD SPECIES GRADES Wood is a natural material and has many characteristics and defects as a result. Some people celebrate them and want to show off the natural variation, whereas others expect perfection similar to a printed laminate. It is important to educate your customers and communicate the expectations to everyone involved. The chosen finish will also determine the allowable defects. A door to be painted white would allow more colour variation or mineral streaks than one to be clear coated. This is why we have set up 3 basic species grades to chose from - beyond this we can communicate directly to determine your needs. Premium Grade Standard Grade Paint Grade This grade allows the least amount of colour variation and natural defects. Best suited for clear coating or for that extra picky customer. Extra effort is taken to select consistent colour across the entire order. However, there will always be some level of variation. This grade allows some colour variation and minor natural defects. This is your average grade door, suitable for clear coat and staining. Minor defects could include mineral streaks, gum spots or very small sound knots (varies by species). Minor putty fill is allowed on backs and edges. All standard pricing is based off this grade for all species. This grade is intended for pigmented top coats. The standard veneer centre panel is replaced with raw MDF. Significant colour variation and mineral streaks are to be expected. Repairs with putty or bondo are acceptable (front and back), as long as a smooth surface results. The Not-So-Fine Print. With all this being said, it needs to be stressed that wood is a natural product. The pictures shown, and the comments made are our best effort to categorize and grade out these characteristics and are not a guaranteed result. Many of these features are based on subjective opinions and are impossible to quantify. If you have any questions are concerns we would be more than happy to go into further detail. 7

CROWN MOULDINGS Crown Mouldings are a common addi on to kitchen designs and can add a look of sophis ca on to a basic bank of cabinets. We stock the profiles shown below in maple, but can bring in other species and profiles on demand. It is best to finish all components and mouldings at the same me as the doors so they are a perfect match. CABINET CM 2 CABINET CM 3 CABINET CM 4 CABINET CM 6 10

HINGE DRILLING Let us take care of the Hinge Drilling, so they are ready to hang as soon as you unwrap them. We drill the hinge holes before the finish is applied so there is no chance of damage. There is nothing worse than having your entire job delayed because a door was scratched while hinge drilling. Our standard hinge drill is designed for a 35mm hinge cup with screw holes spaced 45mm apart. This is a common pattern and will work for most Blum, Hettich and Salice hinges. These dimensions (shown in red in the diagram to the right) are fixed, and cannot be adjusted. The hinge hole offsets (from the edge and the top and bottom) are adjustable to your specifications. Our Hinge Drill Specifications form is available on our website, and must be submitted with each order that is to be drilled. Taller doors require more hinges, and we recommend the following guidelines: Door Height # of Hinges 0-36 2 37-62 3 63-78 4 79-96 5 9.5mm 45mm 35mm Diameter Hinge Hole, 13.5mm Deep (approx.)
