Northern Cape, November 2018

Itinerary Day 1, 5/11/2018 We depart from Johannesburg early in the morning (a 4AM pick up). Today we drive to Pofadder, where we arrive in the late afternoon. Birding en route is limited but includes our first chance at some of the roadside raptors, possibly Pygmy Falcon at the Sociable Weaver nests which we start to encounter around the Upington area. Overnight in Pofadder. Day 2, 6/11/2018 We head north of Pofadder to the small border town of Onseepkans, which is situated on the Orange River, which is the border between South Africa and Namibia. En route we shall keep a look out for Karoo Long-billed Lark, Burchell s Courser, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater etc. The river serves as an oasis for many birds, there are numerous water birds, as well as resident Rosy-faced Lovebirds. The reeds and riverside vegetation hold Namaqua Warbler, Orange River White-eye, African Reed Warbler to mention a few. Overhead we look out for various Swifts, Alpine, Bradfield s, Little and White-rumped are usually encountered here. We head back to town, and after lunch and a short rest we head to the drinking troughs near town in the heat of the day various species come to drink the prize here is the rarely encountered Sclater s Lark, so we will have fingers crossed that they put on a show. Overnight in Pofadder. Day 3, 7/11/2018 After breakfast we head to Koa Dunes brilliant red sand where the Red Lark makes its home. In addition we check out some more drinking troughs for various other species coming in to drink, such as Grey-backed Sparrowlark, Acacia Pied Barbet, Namaqua Sandgrouse etc. The roadside birding en route often produces raptors such as Booted Eagle, Verreaux s Eagle, Martial Eagle. We journey on towards Springbok, where we arrive in the afternoon in time for a look for

Cinnamon-breasted (Kopje) Warbler, along with Layard s Warbler, Long-billed Crombec, Mountain Wheatear etc. Overnight in Springbok. Inbetween there and Alexander Bay on the Namibian border we look for the very localised Barlow s Lark, along with Karoo Lark, Cape Long-billed Lark, Grey Tit, Rufous-eared Warbler etc. Overnight in Springbok. Day 5, 9/11/2018 We now start the journey back eastwards, stopping overnight in Upington. We take some unpaved roads picking up on some species we may have missed thus far.
