Haish s interesting and maybe lesser-known story will be the subject of the 2014 Barbed Wire Sites Bus Tour. Local historian Steve Bigolin and Haish descendant Jeff Marshall will narrate the tours. A highlight of the tour will be a display of Marshall s personal Haish collection at Glidden Homestead. A model of the extravagant Haish mansion, on loan from the Regional History Center at NIU, will be the focal point of the exhibit. The model was built by W. Joseph Zack in partial fulfillment of the requirements for his Master of Fine Arts degree at NIU in 1981. Haish was involved in the infamous patent dispute with Joseph Glidden, for which Glidden was ultimately declared the winner by the US Supreme Court. As a benefactor of DeKalb, Haish donated $150,000 to establish the community library, and joined forces with his rivals to have Northern Illinois State Normal School located in DeKalb. Tickets are $15/person ($12 for members). Pre-registration is required. To register, return the enclosed form, call 815-756- 7904 or write infogliddenhomestead.org.
