IBDA Seminar at Banknote 2018 Conference Making Banknotes Work for People : Human Perception of the Banknote Landscape Seminar Theme per cep tion (pərˈsɛp ʃən). n.1. 1. the act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or the mind; cognition; awareness. 2. a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a stimulus is present. Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio) is the organisation, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. Perception can be defined as our recognition and interpretation of sensory information. Perception also includes how we respond to the information. We can think of perception as a process where we take in sensory information from our environment and use that information in order to interact with our environment. Perception allows us to take the sensory information in and make it into something meaningful. A banknote can be considered a physical object with a perceptual landscape that emits sensory information that will be shaped by the experiences, expectations and context of the user experience. A banknote is a vehicle or a vector containing a range of technologies designed to protect and stimulate the user perception experience via visual or tactile messages. Everything our industry does, directly or indirectly, comes back to this and the end emotional response to such a user experience is based on trust, confidence and certainty. To facilitate the development and diffusion of more information on this subject the IBDA has organised a dedicated seminar at the Banknote 2018 Conference on the theme of Making Banknotes Work for Users Human Perception of the Banknote Landscape Seminar Agenda IBDA Seminar on Making Banknotes Work for People: Time Slot Title 5 minutes Welcome and Introduction 30 minutes How do the Public Use Banknotes and What Do They Actually Do With Them? 30 minutes Making a piece of Art that Communicates to People Coffee 30 minutes Latest Research on Public Perception of Security Features 30 minutes Making Banknotes Work for Special Needs 10 minutes The Banknote of the Future Presentation of World s Largest Banknote Design Competition Ever! 15 minutes Panel Discussion with IBDA Designers Delegate Q&A s with IBDA Member Designers 5 minutes Wrap-up & close

Seminar Objective The goal of this seminar is to create awareness of the importance and impact of human behaviour and perception science on the design and issue of a new series of banknotes. The seminar will present delegates with a range of valuable and practical information of use to stakeholders in a new series project, in particular central banks and banknote designers. The overall objective is to demonstrate the value that data from perception studies can bring to a central bank and banknote designer when elaborating a new series design concept. One may simplify this activity by calling it market or consumer research. In essence this will involve techniques, strategies and approaches commonly used to assess and measure what banknote users like/dislike about banknote design/content and how they react to certain components on a banknote landscape. This information can then be processed to support the decision-making process by central banks and designers and optimize design content and configuration to deliver the desired messages and triggers to banknote users. Seminar Delegates The Seminar will be of interest to management-level professionals involved in the banknote design and issuing process. In particular we encourage delegates with the following profiles to attend our seminars: Central Bank Design Project Managers Central Bank Cash Department Management Central Bank Research Team Managers Banknote Printing Works Management involved in new design projects Forensic and Adversarial Analysis Professionals Design Studio Managers Seminar Leaders IBDA Seminar Speakers are considered to be experts in their specific field and have been selected based on their knowledge and competence in their specific fields. The IBDA has developed a strong reputation for the quality and highly technical content of our conferences and seminars. Since no commercial representation is permitted at our events, seminar delegates are free to listen and learn from speakers who will focus on the technical and practical aspects of their presentation subject, in a neutral and highly objective manner.
