Freestanding Lace with Double-Sided Photo A Guidelines 1. Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer. 2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of your choice. 3. Stitch the placement stitch. 4. Remove the hoop from machine but DO NOT unhoop the stabilizer. Place a portion of the fabric of your choice on the top side of the stabilizer. You may use a very small amount of spray adhesive if you wish. Be sure to use sparingly as too much may begin to dissolve your water soluble stabilizer. Ensure the fabric covers the placement stitch entirely. (Photo A) 5. Flip the hoop over and place a second piece of fabric, again Photo C checking to be sure the placement stitch is covered entirely. Apply gentle pressure by sandwiching the stabilizer between your hands and pressing them together to ensure both pieces of fabric are securely adhered to the stabilizer. (Photo B) 6. Re-attach the hoop to the machine. Stitch the tackdown stitch. This will sew through both layers of fabric creating a two-sided appliqué in the finished project. 7. Remove the hoop from the machine but DO NOT unhoop the stabilizer. Using scissors, carefully trim away the excess fabric as close to the tackdown stitch as possible on both sides. Be careful not to cut the stabilizer or the tackdown stitch. (Photo C) Slight fraying of the fabric will be covered by the lace stitch in later steps. (Photo D) 8. Re-attach the hoop to the machine. Finish stitching out the lace design. 9. When design is complete, remove hoop from the machine and design from hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the design. (Photo E) 10. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow to dry. Photo B Photo D Photo E Handy Tips For stiffer lace: Do not rinse away all of the stabilizer for a stiffer lace. However, do note that the thread may appear a shade darker if stabilizer is not removed completely. Your lace may feel tacky if too much stabilizer remains. If you wash out too much stabilizer, easily re-stiffen by dissolving some of the stabilizer scraps in water and dipping the lace piece in the solution. For very soft lace: Cut away as much excess stabilizer as possible without cutting the design. Rinse in warm water until all traces of stabilizer have dissolved and rinsed away. If lace should become too limp to work with, dissolve some of the stabilizer scraps in water and dip the lace piece in the solution. Drying Lace: Lay the lace piece with right side down to dry. This will minimize the tendency for the lace to curl. 3

(Please see Photo A for explanation of buttonette, eyelet and eyelet loop.) Insert the tip of the tweezers, hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette and pull through the eyelet. A Stiletto could be used to push the buttonette through the eyelet. The lace looks best when left fairly stiff. When the design is finished stitching, wash the design lightly so that some of the watersoluble stabilizer stays in the design. It is better to hold the lace gently and allow the water to flow through rather than working at it or scrubbing the lace. If item becomes too limp to work with, dissolve scrap pieces of water-soluble stabilizer in warm water and apply to the item to re-stiffen. You can also re-stiffen pieces by ironing the appliqué pieces on the wrong side while applying spray starch. After ironing, spray again with starch and allow to dry completely. This will stiffen the lace pieces nicely and aid in construction. Photo A Photo B Cross Follow the Freestanding Lace with Double-Sided Guidelines (page 3) and stitch the sixteen pieces required as listed in the summary above. Connect all four base pieces to the foundation by inserting the buttonettes from the foundation to the eyelets along the bottom of the Cross Front, Back and Side Structures. (Photo B) Now connect the buttonettes to their corresponding eyelets at all four corners of the base beginning at the bottom and working toward the top. Set aside. (Photo C) Connect two Cross Crossbeams to each Cross Interior Structure by inserting the buttonettes on the Cross Interior Structure into the eyelets on the Cross Crossbeams. (Photo D) Now connect one buttonette found at the top of the Cross Crossbeam to the eyelet of the opposite Cross Crossbeam, creating a gentle curving shape. (Photo E) Attach the constructed arms to the constructed base by inserting the four buttonettes along the top of each base front into the two loop eyelets located at the bottom of each arm piece. The buttonettes will be pulled out through the eyelet loops of the arms. Photo C 4

Tip: Attach the side crossbeams before attaching the top crossbeam. It may be easier to lay the cross down before attaching the top crossbeam piece. (Photo F) Attach the Cross Center to the constructed cross by inserting the buttonette along each edge of the Cross Center into the eyelet loops located at the top and bottom center of each arm section and the upper portion of the two base fronts. The Cross Centers are not designed to be perfectly sized to the spacing of the holes. The Cross Centers should bow away from the cross slightly adding dimensions and a graceful curving shape. (Photo G) Your Freestanding Lace Cross is complete! If you wish to attach a placard we recommend a length of chain, beaded wire or ribbon to hang the placard from the arms of the cross.
