1. Spray Buffing & Burnishing A floor surface with a polymer - based finish can be machine maintained in two ways. Spray Buffing Spray buffing involves the use of rotary swing machines that operate at approximately 175rpm and 300 rpm. The process involves spraying a buffing solution on the floor and passing over the surface with a red pad on the machine usually 2 or 3 times. This process will help remove scratches and scuffs as well as bringing up the gloss level of the surface. Burnishing Burnishing is accomplished with machines that operate over pad speeds between 1000 and 2500 rpm. The type of equipment can be Electric, Battery or Propane powered. Generally speaking Electric machines operate between 1000 rpm and 2500 rpm and battery and propane machines operate at approximately 2000 rpm. Burnishing is a dry method of polishing the floor that uses a combination of heat and abrasion to give the wet look. It is important to remember that the finish used for buffing may not be the same as used for burnishing. Many buffable finishes cannot tolerate the heat generated in a burnishing process and may powder. When burnishing pad selection is also important and will depend on: a) The type and hardness of the floor coating b) The degree of wear and scratch of the finish c) The power and pad pressure of the equipment. With either method it is important that the floor is clean before starting and that pads are kept clean and free of any foreign matter.

3. Spray Buffing Procedure Spray buffing is spraying a spray buff solution on scuffed floor areas and buffing those areas while they are damp. This procedure repairs damage to the floor while polishing to restore shine. Procedure: Equipment required: - Floor machine - Red pad - Spray buff solution - Trigger sprayer Why Spray Buff: 1. Dust mop the area 2. Damp mop to remove soil 3. Centre the pad on the holder and install pad and holder on machine. (if the pad is off centre the machine will be difficult to control) 4. Spray a small amount of solution on the scuffed areas 5. When the pad is full of dirt and floor finish, turn it over to use clean side and replace with clean pad To extend the life of the finish To smooth the finish Pointers: Use very little solution when spray buffing Pad should be one inch larger than the pad holder to prevent damage to walls and the pad holder
4. High Speed Burnishing Procedure High speed burnishing is done to get a high gloss or wet look. Equipment Required for Burnishing: Dust mop Damp mop, bucket and wringer Pads High speed buffer (1000-2000 RPM) Procedure: Floor must be clean or you will rub the dirt into the floor When damp mopping, use a product that leaves no residue High speed floor machines should not be used for wet scrubbing Walk in a straight line while using a high speed machine. Do not swing from side to side Remove scuffs & residue with no moisture Clean Up: 1. Wipe machine off 2. Clean the pads off by soaking in a strip solution then rinsing with a hose. 3. Cut down 55 gal drum filled half full with strip solution or use high pressure washing 4. Rinse pads when dirt is loose
