/Platform Environment The rig site are broken into basic work areas. These are: Yard As most all land rigs are transportable, they are moved to a drill location and takes place. Once the well is completed the rig is dismantled during the process. Raising and lowering the derrick is part of the rigging up and down operation. On most rigs you must tie up the monkeyboards, fingerboards and traveling block. Certain safety rules must be followed during these operations. Much of the equipment and materials is heavy and can cause serious injury. Don t get under, between, or behind heavy loads. Never ride a suspended load. Ensure that any operator is aware that you are close to the working equipment. 3

Never walk behind a ramp or stand between a moving vehicle or any other solid object such as a structure, pump or tank. Do not stand near a crane which could flip over. Always stand where a truck driver can see and knows where you are.do not get between the trucks and equipment being moved. Use tag lines when handling a suspended load and if possible use power assisted equipment (winch, gin pole trucks etc.) to move and load equipment. Always have a clear line of sight or use a signalman when moving equipment. Pipe and drill collars are very dangerous, Never try to stop rolling drill pipe tubulurs etc let it fall and come to complete rest and use a forklift or truck to hoist this type of load. 4

Never stand or walk under a suspended load. Be aware of and watch for all moving loads around you. As soon as possible (-UP) install steps, handrails and floor plates. Cover all floor opening as soon as possible. Use all PPE require to job safely. Pay particular attention to fall prevention using tie-offs and safety harness. Use on any unguarded surface 6 feet or more above the next level. This involves many aspects of the / operations. Ask your supervisor for these tasks and follow 100% fall prevention usage in all these task area. 5

The rig floor is where the action is during a drilling operation. Lets discuss: Crew Driller Drawworks Tripping areas Drilling The driller is responsible to the toolpusher and his responsibilities includes; Being the front line supervisor Responsible for the crew and drilling operations during his tour Responsible for the directing and training of the crew and is knowledgeable of all aspects of the drilling operation Company Man ToolPusher Driller Derrickman Rotary Helper Motorman The derrickman is responsible to the driller and his responsibilities includes; Operates and maintains the mud pumps and the mud system Works in the derrick while tripping pipe and running casing Maintains derrick and is knowledgeable of duties of motorman and rotary helper Company Man ToolPusher Driller Derrickman Rotary Helper Motorman 6

The motorman is responsible to the driller and his responsibilities includes; Installs and services rig motors, rotary drives, air compressors and related equipment Installs and maintains service lines Operates the catline and winches and is knowledgeable of duties of rotary helper Company Man ToolPusher Driller Derrickman Rotary Helper Motorman The rotary helper is responsible to the driller and his responsibilities includes; Assists the Driller, derrickman and motorman Carries out housekeeping Digs & cleans ditches etc. and is knowledgeable of his duties and to perform them in a safe manner Company Man ToolPusher Driller Derrickman Rotary Helper Motorman Driller s Console The driller s console, located next to the drawworks (which is located in the rear of the rig floor) and is operated by the driller during hoisting operations. The console controls: Drawworks Catheads Tongs Spinning Chain Rotary Table Mud Pumps 7

Tripping Pipe Tripping pipe means either pulling pipe out of the well bore (tripping out) or tripping in, bringing pipe into the well bore, such as after changing a drill bit. This is done by breaking or making a connection using elevators, slips and tongs. Pipe is then stored on the rig floor (stands) reaching up in the derrick into the finger board. Rotary Table The rotary table is located at the center of the rig floor above the well bore and turns the drill string in a rotating motion and is powered by the rotary table drive. Mousehole The mousehole is used to store the drill pipe which was brought through the V door. V-Door The V-door is the opening to the catwalk in the front part of the rig floor where pipe and other materials are pulled to the rig floor The door should be chained and secured when not in use. 8

BOP Controls The BOP Remote Control console is used to operate the BOP (Blow Out Preventor which is located underneath the rig floor). The accumulator keeps enough pressure to operate the BOP. By opening or closing the proper control on the remote control unit, the BOP operator directs the accumulator to open or close the BOP. BOP Remote Control Monkeyboard The monkeyboard is a working platform on the derrick and is used by the derrickman while tripping pipe to handle pipe stands. Fingerboard Is the metal structure to store the pipe stands in the metal fingers. Crown Block Crown Block Is a large set of pulleys (sheaves) on the top of the derrick in which the drilling line is strung to reduce the weight of the drill string on the drilling line and drawworks. Traveling Block Is another set of sheaves where the drilling line from the crown block is strung and is able to move up and down with the swivel, kelly and drill string attached Traveling Block 9

Swivel Is connected to the traveling block and sustains the weight of the drill stem while permitting the stem to rotate. It also provides a connection for drilling mud to enter the drill string through the kelly hose. Kelly Is a pipe 4 or 6 flat sides attached to the top of the swivel. This pipe is attached at the bottom of the drill string.. The kelly bushing fits into the rotary table so the drill string can be rotated in a drilling motion kelly hose kelly A rotary drill works more like a screwdriver, turning rapidly to force its way down. The rotary table rests on the floor of the oil derrick and is turned by an engine to turn the bit. The rotary table holds the kelly, the uppermost part of the hollow drill stem. The kelly attaches to the drill pipe, which connects to the drill collar that holds the bit. The draw works is what lowers and raises the drill stem out of the hole. A cable runs from the hoisting drum at the bottom of the derrick over two sets of pulleys farther up. A hook connects the lower pulley to the kelly to allow it to be raised and lowered. Working on the Derrick A body harness is required when working at heights above 6 feet. Never work on the derrick without a full body harness and proper tie off. Be aware of objects that may fall from the derrick. If you are working on the derrick, make sure no one is at the risk of being struck by falling objects. Make sure the area below you is clear. Tongs Tongs are large wrenches to makeup (connect) or break out (disconnect) drill pipe, casing, tubing or other pipe. We call this operation that use tongs making or breaking a connection. Different types of tongs are used such as pipe tongs or casing tongs depending on a particular use. The supervisor will instruct personnel in proper use and maintenance of tongs. 10

Slips Slips are wedge-shaped pieces of metal with toothlike gripping dies. They are used in the rotary table to prevent the pipe from slipping down into the hole or to hold the pipe in place. The supervisor will instruct you in the proper use and maintenance of slips. Elevators Elevators are connected by bails to the traveling block next to the swival. Elevators are used for tripping pipe in or out of the wellbore by latching the elevators around the pipe. The elevators raise and lower the pipe while holding it by the pipe shoulder of the tool joint The supervisor will instruct you in proper use and maintenance of elevators. Spinning Chain Spinning chains are very dangerous. It is used to spin pipe joints together while making a connection or trip. The supervisor will instruct you on the safe use of the spinning chain and do not use until you are qualified to do so. A qualified person should be at the driller s console to stop the spinning chain if necessary. 11

Stabbing Pipe Stabbing pipe is part of making a connection where the make up string of tubulars (call a stand) or a single pipe is connected to the drill string suspended in the rotary table. The supervisor will instruct you in the proper procedure and safety measure. Mud Pit & Equipment Drilling mud is a mixer of water, drilling mud, and other chemicals that is circulated through the well bore during drilling. Mud is used to bring cuttings to the surface, cool and lubricate the bit and drill stem, and support the wall of the bore hole. The supervisor will instruct you in the proper PPE use, use and maintenance of mud pits and equipment. Pressurized Equipment Pressure is a form of energy that is commonly used in drilling (air, mud, hydraulic, steam) Pressurized mud is an example where the pressure is generated by mud pumps and circulated through pressure lines. Your supervisor will instruct you in the proper use and maintenance of pressurized lines and equipment. 12

Electrical Equipment Only qualified and authorized personnel are to perform electrical repair and maintenance. Discontinue use of any defective or unsafe electrical equipment and report it to your supervisor. Motorized Equipment Motorized equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and trucks are widely used on drilling sites. Only those trained and authorized personnel are allowed to operate and maintain this equipment.
