Festival 2018 Sunday 24 th June Sunday 24th June 12.30 2.30pm Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham, Notts NG14 7BD A Matter of Life and Death with Adam Kay, Christie Watson and Kathryn Mannix This is going to be an amazing session - three medical professionals turned authors shine a light on the realities of living and dying, in the year in which we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS. Adam Kay is an award-winning comedian and writer for TV and film. His first book, This is Going to Hurt is the often hilarious, at times horrifying, and occasionally heartbreaking diary of a former junior doctor, and the story of why he decided to hang up his stethoscope. Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years before writing two internationally acclaimed novels. Her memoir, The Language of Kindness, is an astonishing account of the nursing profession, and is fast becoming one of 2018 s most talked about books. Dr Kathryn Mannix is a palliative medicine pioneer who has worked with thousands of dying people. She has found their ability to deal with illness and death both fascinating and inspirational, and believes that a better awareness about what happens as we die would enable us to discuss our hopes and fears with the people who matter to us. With The End in Mind is a beautiful and powerful book, exploring the biggest taboo in our society and the only certainty we all share. Tickets: 10 full, 9 concessions, 8 Festival Friends. She works with arts organisations, the charity sector, academic institutions and unexpected collaborations such as with organisations Tatty Devine & Secret Cinema, and regularly gives talks around the world. In her books A Little Book of Craftivism and How To Be A Craftivist: the art of gentle protest, Sarah shows how to respond to injustice not with apathy or aggression, but with gentle, effective protest. He has written eight books and produced two one-man shows about football and cricket. Thursday 28 th June Lowdham Book Thursday 28th June 2.00 3.30pm for the train-lovers in our audience! Tickets: 6 full, 5 concessions, 4 Festival Friends 7.30 9.00pm, St Mary s Church, Church Lane, Lowdham Notts NG14 7BQ Night Trains with Andrew Martin Night trains have long fascinated us with the possibilities of their private sleeping compartments, gilded dining cars, champagne bars and wealthy travellers. Authors from Agatha Christie to Graham Greene have used night trains to tell tales of romance, intrigue and decadence against a rolling background of dramatic landscapes. The reality could often be as thrilling: early British travellers on the Orient Express were advised to carry a revolver (as well as a teapot). In Night Trains, Andrew Martin attempts to relive the golden age of the great European sleeper trains by using their modern-day equivalents. This is no simple matter. The night trains have fallen on hard times, and the services are disappearing one by one. But if the Orient Express experience can only be recreated by taking three separate sleepers, the intriguing characters and exotic atmospheres have survived. Whether the backdrop is 3am at a Turkish customs post, the sun rising over the Riviera, or the constant twilight of a Norwegian summer night, Andrew rediscovers the pleasures of a continent connected by rail. Tickets: 8 full, 7 concessions, 6 Festival Friends includes a glass of wine 8 Festival Box Office 10 4 Mon to Sat 0115 9663219
