splinting products
Introduction Multicast Thermoplastics offer OT and O&P practitioners the best form of dynamic splinting available today. Perfect for fracture immobilisation, static splinting, dynamic splinting, splinting for burn patients, foot orthotics and post-operative splinting. Moulds directly to the skin X-ray translucent After application, it transforms into a hard splint that does not need reinforcing Indefinite shelf life: no waste Follows the exact contours of the treated surface Does not stick to body hair Lightweight splinting Inexpensive - great prices available Multicast thermoplastics also do not emit toxic gases or vapours during application. Splinting made simple Memory: All Multicast products have 100% plastic memory. That means the material will recover its original, form and thickness after reheating. Splints can be remolded as frequently as needed! variety of handling techniques. Multicast Rigid has minimal stretch resistance. This property is used for the ease of circumferential splinting. Ease of finishing: Multicast generally has exceptional smoothing capabilities when heated. The unique coatings of Multicast Standard make fingerprints and other surface marks disappear. Multicast Ortho resists fingerprints too while the material is warm. Major modifications can be made with a heat gun. It can also be mechanically grinded or buffed for quick finishing (at a moderate speed). Modifications should only be carried out when the material has completely cooled down. Cutting: Can be cut with scissors or knife. Bonding: Self adhesive when hot - just press together. Fastening: Hook & loop, rivets, etc. No solvents needed! Processing temperature: Uncoated materials like Multicast Ortho and Multicast Rigid can be processed at the temperature of 60 C - 65 C (140 F - 149 F). Multicast Standard has a processing temperature of 70 C - 75 C (158 F - 167 F). All Multicast materials are designed to be moulded directly on the patient s skin. While processed in hot water the material absorbs heat, but when taken out of the water surface temperature decreases automatically. See below: Transparency: Multicast Ortho and Multicast Standard turn semi-transparent when heated. This enables the therapist to see contours and landmarks under the material. Multicast Rigid is a coloured material that become opaque when heated. Drape or conformability: All Multicast materials are superior in following the exact contours of the treated surface, even to minute details, due to their exceptional anatomo-topographic properties. Stretch: Multicast Standard and Multicast Ortho have moderate stretch resistance which allows control over the material and offers a Multicast perforation patterns All Multicast thermoplastic sheets are available in solid form (i.e. non-perforated) and with varying degrees of perforations: micro (42%), multi (38%) and mini (2.5%). Non-Perforation Micro (42%) Multi (38%) Mini (2.5%) 2 further information: www.multi-cast.info
Multicast range The patented velvet like surface of Multicast Standard provides perfect conformity and comfort. Ease-of-use and exceptional ventilation properties have made Multicast Standard a favourite among medical professionals. Multicast Standard will also not stick to itself in hot water. Multicast ortho Multicast Ortho is an exceptionally versatile thermoplastic that offers the advantages of partial transparency when heated. Multicast Ortho offers maximum drape and has a lower heating temperature than Multicast Standard. Multicast Rigid follows the exact contours of the treated surface. After processing, it transforms into a hard splint. It does not need reinforcing, its light-weight and does not shrink when heated. Ideal for applications where the splint needs to be firm and enduring. Material selection: Multicast Standard can be substituted by Multicast Ortho depending on processing and splint preference, e.g. Multicast Ortho is transparent when heated. Points to consider: Multicast Standard is preferable for an orthosis with a small surface area. Multicast Standard is preferable for children. Multicast Standard is preferable when applied over a bandage. The material will not stick to bandages. Highly recommended for post-operative splinting and burn injuries. Multicast Rigid is preferable for an orthosis with a large surface area. Choose a thermoplastic with large ventilation holes, such as Micro and Multi to prevent skin maceration. If you have limited experience with splinting techniques choose Mini perforated sheets instead of Multi. Non-perforated plates are only used for non-circular orthoses that cover less then half of the body surface. Absence of ventilation holes will lead to skin maceration. Choose Multicast Standard or Multicast Ortho when using Gravity-Assisted Moulding techniques. For vertical moulding choose thermoplastics with good adhering surface, such as Multicast Ortho or Multicast Rigid. Standard Multicast Standard is a low temperature thermoplastic material bonded with a 0.6mm furry foam layer. The characteristic advantage of the foam coating is that the thermoplastic does not stick to itself in hot water, thus sizable surfaces can be put in a small hot water container and the material is easier to work with. The foam coating also creates a minute layer of air between the patient's skin and the thermoplastic, reducing the possibility of skin chafing. Multicast usage tips: Place the patient on a table, in an ergonomic position. Begin by ensuring which movements in hand or foot are possible. Check the condition of the skin. Use a pattern or draw an approximate model to avoid material waste. Take pieces of Multicast from the hot-water bath in a folded position. On using a heat gun, touch the weakened Multicast with wet fingers. Optimal heat conduction can be obtained by turning over the material onto a moistened towel (preferably a bath towel) immediately after the surface has weakened, before continuing the treatment. The hardening period can be reduced by applying cold water, ice cubes or a cold spray. Try to limit stretching the material. A cut out model has sharp edges, which can be smoothed away by dipping the edges into the hot water for 3 seconds and then smoothing them with the fingers. Cast fastenings can be made using hook and loop. This is the simplest and fastest way of fastening. By heating the Multicast locally and superficially with a heat gun, it is possible to push the loops strip down on to the soften surface. To prevent energy impact inside the cast, a cushioning material can be adhered to problem areas. Where epidermititis might be a risk, ensure the patient wears a stockinette lining under the thermoplastic, renewing it daily.
