MODEL 1703E THE CHAMBERLAIN ARM TM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS To be used in conjunction with the Lift-Master Garage Operator Owner's Before you begin, please read this ENTIRE instruction manual. One- Piece Canopy One-Piece with Dual Track For use only with one-piece canopy and dual track doors as illustrated above. Do not use this door arm with sectional doors, fully retractable doors or canopy doors with jamb hardware. Review all safety warnings on page one of your garage door operator owner's manual. Ensure that the door and all its operating gear is in good condition and works easily when it is manually operated. Lubricate all garage door working parts before installing the door arm. Ensure that the timber garage door frame on both sides and above the door is in good and sound condition and is securely fixed to the main structure of the garage. If there is any doubt, consult a professional garage door installer. (See the Yellow Pages under Garage s) Do not run the operator until installation is complete. The Chamberlain TM
The Chamberlain TM has been designed so that, when used with a Chamberlain manufactured operator, the door will open to a fully horizontal position, Figure 16. When returning to your Owner's, adjust the trolley travel limits as follows: With the inner and outer trolley sections still disconnected, manually open your door to the horizontal position. Make a mark on the rail where the end of trolley nearest to the operator stops. Now, manually close the door and mark the rail where the end of the trolley nearest the door stops. With the inner and outer trolley sections still disconnected, activate the operator and adjust the UP and then the DOWN limits (located on the left side panel) until the inner trolley stops on the marks you made. One turn of the limit control equals 2" (51mm) of travel. Reconnect the inner and outer trolley sections. Run the operator again to ensure the door is opening and closing correctly. Some minor adjustment of the trolley travel limits may be required to fully open and close the door. Note: The door may be designed not to open to the full horizontal. Adjust the UP limit so the door stops at a slight downward angle when open. Canopy Should be Horizontal in Fully Open Position Wall 3 Section Rail Assembly Canopy Ceiling Trolley Hanging Operator Use Limit Adjustment to Level Horizontally Track Figure 16 Continue with the instructions in your Owner's. At the Force Adjustment Section, set the DOWN control to the minimum force required to close the door without nuisance reversals. Force controls should be set no more than mid-way. If door does not operate properly without forces set higher than mid-way, review door arm instructions. Also, test the door for smooth and proper operation: Pull the manual release handle to disengage the trolley. Lift the door about halfway. the door. It should stay in place, supported entirely by its springs. Raise and lower the door to see if there is any binding or sticking. If your garage door binds, sticks or is out of balance, call for professional garage door service. Note: In rare installations, the canopy door may touch the operator rail when closing. This is NOT the fault of the operator or arm. If this occurs: 1. ly check the operation of the canopy door to ensure that it is closing easily. The door must have a slight drop at the start of closing. 2. If the door is not running easily, check that the side wires are not catching or binding on the wire guides. Move the guides until the wires run free. 3. Raise the operator head by about 50mm (2") above the vertical so there is a slight downward angle on the rail. 4. The door spring may be overtensioned. Do not attempt to adjust the spring. Call a local garage door installing professional. It is strongly recommended that The Protector System TM (a safety reversing sensor accessory) be installed. 114A1604D-GB 1996, CWI electrotechnics GmbH All rights reserved
Note: A 6T-Sprocket Adapter Kit (53736) is available. Please contact the Help-line (number in operator manual) for details. The Chamberlain is shown below, installed on a canopy door (with and without a structural obstruction) and a dual track door. To ensure proper door operation, use the slower 6-tooth sprocket (where fitted) when installing the chain/cable. On a canopy door only, when using a chain drive operator, it is recommended you install the operator using a short rail assembly. When using a screw drive, belt drive or operator supplied with a single piece rail, use rail as supplied. Canopy Should be Horizontal in Fully Open Position Use Limit Adjustment to Level Horizontally Wall Track Canopy Recommended Use - 3 rail sections (1B3706 rail) 3 Section Rail Assembly Canopy Ceiling Trolley Operator Hanging Important! The rail and opener must be installed parallel to floor. Follow rail assembly instructions as shown in the Owner's except: discard (1) center section of T-rail and shorten chain. Use the 6-tooth sprocket (where fitted). The rail and opener must be installed parallel to the floor. If you have an obstruction that prevents you from using a short rail assembly, then install the complete rail assembly packed with operator. Use the 6- tooth sprocket (where fitted). BUT, the rail must then be supported as shown. Rail support must not block trolley travel. The rail and opener must be installed parallel to the floor. Use complete rail assembly. Use the 6- tooth sprocket (where fitted). BUT, the rail must then be supported at its midpoint as shown. The rail support must not block trolley travel. You may find it helpful to refer to the applicable illustration above as you proceed with the installation of your garage door operator and The Chamberlain. 2
Note: Figure 1 applies to chain & T-rail garage door openers only. For other types, use the standard rail supplied. For a canopy door without structural obstruction, follow these replacement instructions for Assembly Step 1 in your Owner's. Then, Proceed with Steps 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in your operator Owner's except: Step 8 - do not put the bolt in the front trolley stop hole. Nuts The T-bar braces and nuts MUST be connected to the rails from the direction shown. Otherwise, trolley will hit against the nut when it is installed. T-RAIL FRONT (TO DOOR) For a canopy door, the instructions and illustrations below (Figure 2) replace Step 11 in the Owner's which refers to positioning the header bracket. If you have an inward facing lintel which does not allow the header bracket to be fitted directly above the garage door, please contact our help-line (in operator manual) for additional instructions. For dual track doors, install the header bracket 2" (51mm) above the high point of door travel as shown in the Owner's. Canopy doors are normally supplied without a frame, for fixing to a timber frame. In this case, ensure header bracket is located as in illustration below: Frame Jamb Standard Canopy bracket 1-1/2" 38mm 3-13/16" 97mm Lip bracket If the door has a lip, measure from the top of the door, not the top of the lip. 4-15/32" 113.5mm For doors either pre-hung in a metal frame or supplied with a metal frame for self-assembly, ensure header bracket is located as in illustration below: Frame Jamb Pre-Hung Canopy (with Attached Frame) Frame 1-1/2" 38mm Pre Hung With Frame 1" 25mm 1-5/8" 41mm Figure 2 Proceed with Steps 12 and 13 in your Operator Owner's. Replace Step 14 in the Owner's with the following instructions: Raise the operator until the rail is horizontal. The rail should be parallel to the floor. Temporarily support the operator using a stepladder. Continue with Steps 15 through 18 in the Owner's. In Step 15, the removal of 1" (25mm) board does not apply to canopy doors. After Step 18 is completed, proceed to page 4 in this manual to begin installation of the Chamberlain. 3
