BUTLER NORTH - Youngstown: Butler North (formerly known as the First Christian Church) houses the Dennison Education Center, the home of the Butler s education department. Butler North is located next to the Butler Institute on the corner of Wick Avenue and University Plaza. Thanks to the generosity of the Dennison family, this beautiful facility is the site for Butler classes, lectures and private lessons. INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ART HISTORY Join Butler docents in the Zona auditorium for a Film on Art program that focuses upon art history. Lectures as well as video from the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. will cover American and European painting, as well as a variety of other art forms. This series is held on Tuesdays at noon. Contact Richard Adler 330-743-1107, ext. 1103 for program information. PLEASE NOTE Class size is limited. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis. Sessions that do not fill will be cancelled or combined. No written confirmation will be mailed. If you do not hear from us, your enrollment is ensured. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships based on need are available on a limited basis for children s classes at our Youngstown and Trumbull Butler locations. Please direct written requests to the Butler Education Department in Youngstown and include a recommendation from the student s art teacher. CREATE YOUR OWN COMIC BOOK AND MANGA STYLE CARTOONING Create your own action adventure comic book telling your own story and creating exciting characters and settings. Traditional cartooning as well as the Manga style will be explained. Students will learn how to plot out their own storyline and create interesting characters in comic book form like the pros! This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. A variety of materials and techniques will be explored in our drawings. Different artists will be studied who worked in each style. A variety of media will be used. Sculptures will be painted to interpret the chosen masterpiece. Mary Pat George, art instructor Tuesdays-2 weeks-august 7 & 14 #016-Grades 3-4 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. #017-Grades 5-8 1:00-3:00 p.m. TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH BRINGING REALITY TO CANVAS (ALL LEVELS) This painting class will provide students of all skill levels time to work at their own pace while creating an oil painting from a photographic source. This class may be repeated. Students are asked to bring a 5 x 7 photo for use on an 11 x 14 pre-stretched canvas. (Ambitious students may try larger surfaces-i.e. 8 x 10 photo with a 16 x 20 canvas but must provide their own canvas.) Although reference photos that you have taken are preferred, it is a good idea to have several different photos with you at the start. In some cases you may like a different sky, or trees or just want to combine several to make an image more unique or personal. In many cases, choosing a photo with larger shapes and good contrast from light to dark may be easier to translate. All supplies for painting in oils will be provided. Students wishing to work in acrylics may bring their own paints and instruction will be provided as well. Supply fee is waived if students have their own supplies. Previous students can use time in class to complete any earlier oil paintings and begin a new work. Students will learn different techniques of recognizing shape and form to transition their drawing as well as tools to help them learn basic drawing skills. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) Please bring several different 8 x 10 full color reference pictures. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) TEEN/ADULT CLASSES - YOUNGSTOWN-BUTLER NORTH BASIC PENCIL DRAWING FOR TEENS Students will learn basic drawing techniques: shape, contour outlining, and form. Basic skills in shading and light source will be taught along with depth and placement of objects. Materials/tools will also be explained. Students should bring several 8 x 10 black and white photo references of subject matter they would enjoy learning to draw. This class may be taken multiple times and will build upon previous experiences. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) Wednesdays-5 weeks-june 13, 20, 27, July 11, 18 (no class July 4) #A07-Grades 9-12 2:30-4:00 p.m. Thursdays-5 weeks-july 19, 26, August 2, 9, 16 #A08-Grades 9-12 4:00-5:30 p.m. WATERCOLOR PAINTING Dive into the wonderful world of watercolor painting. Students will learn water saturation, color mixing, lighting, and values. Instructor will demonstrate working with different types of paper and brushes. Layout of artwork and composition will also be discussed. Join us for a great class for all to enjoy at any level. Please bring several 8 x 10 color photo references of your favorite subject matter. Students will learn lighting, shading, layering, and perspective to produce beautiful full color works of their favorite subject matter. Basic skills using tube acrylic painting will be explored: color mixing, blending, shading, and light source. Basic composition of their project before painting actual piece of artwork. An informative class of this widely used media! Please bring several 8 x 10 color photo references of your favorite subject matter you would like to learn to paint in acrylic. (Supplies will be discussed in first class.) INTERIOR DESIGN DRAWING A hands-on approach to layout design drawing. Students will learn perspective, drawing furniture and accessory placement of objects along with color and light source. Layout drawing will be done with student s choice of marker/watercolor, colored pencil and pen/ink to render a beautiful presentation. Plan a real or imaginary remodel of a room in your home. (Students should bring several 8 x 10 color photos of a room in their home.) Fridays-5 weeks-june 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6 #A15-Teen/Adult (14 & up) 6:00-8:00 p.m. STUDIO OIL/ACRYLIC PAINTING (ALL LEVELS) Learn or continue learning to paint at your own pace and level. Bring a few references to paint, making sure they are clear so detail can be seen. Instructor will be available for suggestions and assistance.
