News Release For immediate release Hongkong Land unveils The Journey of a Promise Oil Paintings by Pang Jiun A retrospective exhibition of the decades long creative journey of a contemporary oil painting master HONG KONG, 10 th July 2018 Hongkong Land today launched The Journey of a Promise Oil Paintings by Pang Jiun, an exhibition showcasing the creative process over the last 60 years of a man who is considered one of the great masters of Chinese oil painting. Employing a style that recalls both Fauvism and the poetic feeling of Chinese ink painting, Pang uses tones of grey to depict misty scenery in his works, most of which are landscapes, still lifes and human figures. The exhibition will run from 10 th July to 31 st July 2018 at The Rotunda, Exchange Square and the footbridge from LANDMARK ALEXANDRA to LANDMARK ATRIUM. The Journey of a Promise Oil Paintings by Pang Jiun features more than 30 masterworks created by Pang at various periods and places, of which 20 are being shown to the public for the very first time. The exhibition offers an extraordinary opportunity to be immersed in some of the greatest masterpieces of Chinese contemporary oil painting. In addition to displaying some of his greatest paintings from the past, Hongkong Land has also commissioned Pang to create new artworks for the exhibition. These paintings feature Hong Kong themes rendered in Pang s distinctive east-meets-west artistic style, all displayed within a venue designed to reflect traditional Chinese landscaping. Visitors will find themselves steeped in the scenery of a literati garden, presented with vistas streaming through classical latticework and oil paintings hanging on an array of white Chinese garden walls. In addition, to further celebrate the artist s life-long dedication to oil painting, a 16m-long work by Mr Pang will be displayed on the footbridge from LANDMARK ALEXANDRA to LANDMARK ATRIUM. As a dedicated patron of art and culture, Hongkong Land is proud to host this exhibition together with the artist, providing the public with a wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves amongst some of the greatest masterpieces of the Chinese contemporary oil painter, said Mr Robert Wong, Chief Executive of Hongkong Land. We hope this exhibition brings beauty with joy, just as the art of Pang Jiun has captured audiences for more than 60 years. Pang has long been hailed as the Qi Baishi of oil painting. On a mission to change the belief that oil paintings don t belong to the Chinese, Pang s decades long career has been marked by an obsession to create oil on canvases with Chinese characteristics. Over the decades he has consistently worked in oil and studied Impressionist art. He has also developed keen insight into sketching subjects through years of relentless life drawing, learning to inject spirit and emotion into his paintings and create visually distinctive works. Today, Pang has reached a level of mastery where he paints without any modifications. Page 5 Pang Jiun Pang Jiun is considered a master of Chinese contemporary art. He has long been hailed as the Qi Baishi of oil painting for his works that recall both Fauvism and the poetic feeling of Chinese ink painting. Pang uses tones of grey to distinctively depict misty scenery in his works, most of which are landscapes, still lifes and human figures. Pang was born in Shanghai in 1936 into an artistic family; his father, Pang Xuqin, and mother, Qiu Ti, both belonged to the first generation of Chinese oil painters. Having spent a childhood immersed in avant-garde art, Pang developed a passion for delving into Impressionism and admired the Fauvist painter Henri Matisse. For the past 70 years, Pang has consistently been working in oil and studying Impressionist art. He developed a keen insight into sketching subjects through years of relentless life drawing, learning to inject spirit and emotion into his paintings and create visually distinctive works. He strongly believes that Chinese oil on canvas works can be more exquisite, detailed and extensive; therefore, he has made it his lifelong mission to create oil paintings and change the belief that they don t belong to the Chinese.
